Stamped metal car body. The present invention relates to a stamped metal automobile body comprising a main body spar having the shape of a U in cross section.
In the body according to the invention, the body uprights are fixed to said spar, these uprights having parts arranged between the walls of said spar.
Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to establish a framework comprising a minimum number of parts, which are all of the. form it. as simple as possible and as regular as possible, compatible with their robustness and the solidity of the assemblies.
The body side members are preferably formed partly from elements and extensions of the side body panels and partly from longitudinal beams, so that not only a saving in materials is obtained, but also robustness and durability. larger due to the intimate relationship between the metal of the lateral panel and the spar.
In order to make more intimate the relationship of the body upright, on the one hand, with the side panel and, on the other hand, with the lon gerons, it is possible to constitute the external part of the side members, the side upright and the mon tant body in one piece which obviously has its foundation in the spar itself.
The efficiency of making and fitting the joints between the body sections can be increased by dividing the body along planes, one of which is located just behind the awning and the other just in front of the awning. the rear part, which gives three sections which will be referred to hereinafter as the front section, the front seat section and the rear seat section. The front bench section will then carry the main body rails and the joints will be made between the ends of these main rails and the face elements of the frame of the upwind section and of the wind section. the rear part, respectively.

In Fig. 1, the front bench section is generally designated by 50, the canopy section by 51 and the rear section by 52 .
The joint between the front bench section and the canopy section is generally designated by 53 and, likewise, the joint between the. Front bench section and rear section is denoted by 54. The outline of the front bench section is shown; particularly in fig. 2, 3 and 4 and]. Its sections and details thereof. This section is essentially composed. of long main cash managers, generally designated by 55, and of a storage and bench structure, generally designated by 56.
Tees 55 main bed rails usually have the. shape of an inverted U iron as shown in fig. 8 and 9 associated with FIG. 3. The outer half 57 of this U section and the inner half 58 of said section have the lower edges of their side walls connected to each other by strips 59 welded to these edges. certain intervals. The outer portion 57 (the spar, both forward and backward, is a direct one-piece extension of the base of the body side panel 60, as it clearly emerges from the sides. fig. 2 and 5.
The lower edge of the side panel 60 is provided with an inwardly extending wing 61 (Fig. 5), and this wing extends throughout the length of the spar extensions as. it emerges from fig. 2, 8 and 9. However, the body of the panel 60 is not deflected, and this body, like its extension, are shaped according to the external contour of the body itself. However, the upper edges of the extension 57 are provided with wings 62 extending inwardly and constituting a part of the threshold of the. door in each case. The other half of the spar 58 is a longitudinal beam extending from one end to the other and having the general shape of a Z, the web of which is bent outwards.
Its upper branch 63 is placed above the threshold wings of the extension 57 constituting the outer half of the spar, and the outer edge of this overlapping upper branch has a contour suitable for matching that of the part 57, defined by the apex of the angle between its branches, and the pieces are welded in this position to cover and form. thus a closed bottom for the U-shaped section of the spar. However, as shown in fig. 5, facing the body of the upwardly extending panel 60, 1a.
branch 63 simply abuts against the body of the panel and is not secured thereto, whereby the lower part of the panel is open at this point, the panel 60 extending freely upward above this point. The lower branch 64 of the Z-section constitutes an inwardly extending wing serving to support the floor slats 65. The outwardly inclined web of this inner half 58 of the long geron constitutes the core. inclined internal face of the door sill. The top of the threshold is formed by the upper branch 63.
In each case, this threshold has a contour curved substantially along an arc of a circle and has, in fact, a concave shape, so that its lateral ends are higher than its middle, and the section of the length is , correspondingly higher at opposite ends than in the middle.
In addition to the extension 57 formed integrally with the panel 60, are also formed integrally with this panel of the internal wings 66 and 67 provided on its front and rear edges, which wings cooperate with the. immediately adjacent part of the panel 60 and with the parts associated therewith to form door post structures as shown in figs. 2, 3, 11 and 12. The structure of the front upright (fig. 3 and 11) comprises the wing 66, the body of which is offset to form a rebate for the door and a rear internal extension 68.
These two elements 66 and 68 constitute, together with the immediately adjacent body of the panel 60, a vertical wall having in cross section the shape of a U, the opening of which is turned towards the rear. In this amount are mounted the various devices. arranged to cooperate with that of the edges of the door which closes against this amount. In this post are also mounted tabs 69 for fixing the pad-0, which tabs are sou dees to the offset part of the rebate.
The upright located at the rear edge of the panel is formed by the inner flange 67, the body immediately adjacent to the panel 60 and a vertical angle 70, one flange of which is welded to the inner face of the flange 67 and the other of which wing protrudes inward and out to a.r- ri @ rf -_-. In this upright structure are mounted:
(the hinge sleeves 71 arranged to receive the ends of the hinge tabs fi:.: es to the door which pivots on this upright. Other devices arranged to operate with the door can be fitted in addition to, or as a replacement (the. these sleeves (the hinge 71.
The body side members 55 are connected to each other by means of a joint with the upper part of the inner wing 64 of the irides? and 73, one of which is in the form of a box and the other the. shape of an inverted U ('fig. 3).
The crossbar 72), while having the shape of a box, is in reality composed of (their U-shaped elements, the lateral branches of which are provided with lateral edges. These re edges being fixed together, for example by 'oudure. The front edge of the upper section of this cross member 72 is wider than the corresponding edge of the lower section, and its front edge is offset so that it presents the shape of a Z in section.
On the lower branch 7.1 of the Z is mounted, with the aid of a wing 75 extending forward, the transverse footrest plate 76 of the front bench seat, the plate of which the upper edge 77 is angled towards the rear and worm: the bottom to correspond to the plane of the bench. The opposite ends of this plate 76 are bent backwards as shown in Figs. 2, 3, q and 9 so as to re cover the inclined internal faces of the threshold.
These rear extensions 78 have their upper edges 79 angled inward, and they are the same as the upper edges 77 of the body of the plate 76, and this, spreading out so that they are placed in the plane, inclined back and down, from the bench. However, their lower edges: have ripened:
of flange extending inward instead of extending outward, as indicated at 80 (fit. 3), and each of these flanges 80 is fixed, for example by welding, to the inclined face of the threshold that it covers. The rear ends 90 of the extension 78 are respectively attached to the internal faces of the B-pillar structure at the front edge of the side panel 60.
The rear bracket 73, made up of an inverted U piece, has considerable dimensions, and the PU base is arranged at a height and following such an inclination; that the inclined plane of the bench, a plane outlined by line 91, is placed in the extension of the plane defined by the internal bores (1 7 7 and 79 of the plate 76, 78. This part assembly ; 76, 78, 7 3 constitutes the front, rear and end support structure of the bench itself.
On the rear edge (fil-. 3 and -1) (the inclined base of the. U-shaped cross member 73 is supported by a front edge 92 against the lower section 93 of the rear bench panel. The body of this section 93 is located transversely in front of the face 76 of the upright B, and its ends:
9-1 are extended to the rear and provided with a wing 95 extending outwardly and connected to the. face 67. The lower edges 96 of the ends 91 are in contact with the upper wing 63 of the main body spar and thus finish the interior of the rear part at this right. 3 its upper edge, la. lower section 93 of the rear panel of the bench is provided with a rear flange 97 on the underside of which the base flange 98 of the is welded. section (the intermediate rear panel 99 (the bench.
This section is convex towards the rear (fil-. 2, 3 and 12), the convexity al-rnentant upwards. This intermediate section is made of a relatively thin metal. Its upper edge is provided (the one flange 10 () extending forward and to which the base flange 101 of the upper section 102 of the rear-ring of the bench seat is welded.
This upper section is made of relatively thick metal key and is, in order to reinforce and firmly brace not only the intermediate panel section 99, but also, and mainly., To strongly brace the upper ends of this section of the uprights. of the cash register. The upper edge of this section of the panel is angled forward and down to form a U 103 section with the cavity facing down, which section is intended to receive the edge. upper padding assembled and to be constituted by its. outer surface the finished top rail of the front bench seat.
The intermediate section 99 and the upper section 102 of this rear panel are attached to the. struc ture of the upright by vertical angles 70 (fig. 3 and 12) to which their opposite ends are welded. The edges of the panel sections 99, 102 thus form a butt joint with the edge of the. re-entrant part 67 of panel 60.
The awning section 51 comprises the usual awning panel provided with top 104 and side 105 sections usually made in one piece. The front edge of this panel is provided with an internally offset element 106, and the front edge of this element is provided with an internal rim 107 to which is usually connected a stamped guard plate in the form of a bowl. In this provision, instead of providing for the. guard plate, the front end of the awning structure is reinforced by a horn 108 arranged along a perimeter and housed and welded inside the angle formed between the offset element 106 and the rim 107 (fi -. 15).
The inner edge of the. angle iron 108 is provided with a bulge or rib 109 designed to extend around the offset member 106 and to rest well against the adjacent walls of the main body of the windward ring. In this way, besides that the front edge of the awning retains its shape as is usual in the case of using a guard plate, the front end of this body is protected, despite the absence of such a plate against deformation ,. sizing and other damage that may occur in handling the crate during manufacture and shipping, both on its face edges and on adjacent parts of the crate panel itself.
The upper part 104 of this awning panel has an opening 110 for the installation, of a fan 111 actuated as usual by a mechanism 112, from the interior of the awning. Internal wings 118 were provided on the edges of this opening and to these wings were welded, using its. outer side wall 114, the U seat 115 whose cavity faces upwards and which is intended to receive the bearing surfaces 116- for the fan 111. By welding the internally displaced wings 113 to the side wall 114 key to the U-shaped part, completely avoids the deterioration of the exterior of the awning, as was done in previous constructions.
The rear edge of the upper part 104 is provided with a wing 117 inclined upwardly and arranged to behave at the. as a stop for a windshield structure (fig. 14 and 15). A finishing rail 118 having the shape of a U in cross section is. secured by welding below the rear edge of the top 104 of the awning panel and protrudes rearwardly a slight distance from said edge. The rear parts 105 are each provided with an internal rim 119 (fig. 16 and 17). This rim is cut out at its lower part as indicated in FIGS. 15 and 24a.
On the same height as this rim is placed a vertical post, the cross section of which is that of a combined U and an angle iron, the cavity of which faces outwards, and the wall of which the rear side is welded to the outside of the rim 119. In the post structure formed by these members are fixed door mounting devices such as hinge sleeves - and the like. A downwardly extending angle 1201- is welded by its. rear branch 1? Oa to the rear wall of this upright structure, 1a. cavity of this angle being turned forwards and outwards.
This constitutes the basic element of the post structure which has just been described.
At its lower part, the awning unit is provided with an awning spar 121 (fig. 15, 19. to 22 and 36). This spar 121 is made of an angle iron having its cavity facing inward and towards the binder, and the lower edge of the awning panel 105 is bent inward and welded sou; the lower wing of the onion as shown. the fib. 15 and 18.
The front end of the spar is internally offset and fixed by welding and edge tage directly to the lower ends of the angle iron 108 located at the front end of the awning. At its end, it is provided with a tab 122) extending inward:
cur, which tab is similarly attached to the transverse branch of the angle] U8. Its rear end is also deported inward and to a greater extent, being arched around the lower end of the base 120b of the upright structure and welded to its inner wall as clearly shown in the figures. . 15 and 24.
In this way, the awning unit is. in turn provided with a frame comprising the canopy Iberons 121 and an arched angle] (18. the upright structures comprising the: elements 119, 120 and the final cross member 118, the latter being welded to the upper ends of the upright by its opposite ends.
A windshield support structure 121a interconnects the vertilized legs of part 108 and the upper ends of the uprights.
The rear section 52 shown in detail by fi-. 25 and 26 and. the sections s', # - relating, comprises a composite framework (the side spars 123 having in section the. form of an angle bar, the cavity of which is turned inwards and upwards. (fih. 28 < U>) and an extreme spar 124 having the shape of a Z in section (fi ,. 27). A their front ends, the side members 123 are re-connected to a console 125 for the upright.
The console 125 includes a wheel casing part 12G shaped to constitute a part of the wheel casing in: the extension of the part formed by the rear panel, or otherwise, and a part. U-shaped 1-) 7 hugging the. arched shape of the part 136 constituting the base of the mon tant, the. base of upright 128 constituting an extension of its upper end.
The basics of. part of envelopment of rent and part in U, and especially of the. first, are provided with an internal horizontal wing 139. The side members 123 are lo gés in the angle formed between the wing 129 and the wheel wrapping part 126 and. are welded on the. face of the wheel casing as well as on the horizontal fender 129. A spacer 130 arranged transversely and serving as a pillar support for the ban quette support is provided, at its ends, with a rim .. 131. folded inside , extending rearwardly and covering the far front end of the side members 123.
At its sides (-. Upper and. Lower. It is provided respec tively with flanges 132, 1.33 extending towards the rear and towards the front, the former serving to support the front part of the bench and the the second being welded at its ends directly to the base flanges 129 of the upright brackets.
Horizontal wings; side members 123. 121 are offset upwards as seen in FIGS. 2 7 and 27a to receive below them triangular angle plates 13-1. The bodies of these gussets. place:
out of contact with the offset element 134, are driven inwards and offset forwards to such an extent due to the upper surface of the gussets and the upper surface of the horizontal parts of the side members: 122, < B> 123 are located in a common plane.
Across the outer edges of these triangular plates extend angle spacers 135 having. in section la. shape of an inverted U whose side walls are provided: rte external edges situated in a corner-rou plan = i. The struts, corner plate and stringers are welded together in triple thickness at the ends of the struts, and the flanges of the struts are welded to the flat top surface of the corner plates 134.
Thus, in these regions, an extremely rigid structure is obtained which is closely assembled and which, when the body is attached to. a frame by bolts passing through the struts 135 is arranged to transmit the key forces on the road directly to the rear lons, which -structure, due to the fact due. corner plate and the spacer are placed respectively below and above the lower part and the.
upper part of the side members, provides an interlocking joint which increases the strength of the welded fastener and produces a corner structure of maximum duration. An opening. 136 is provided through the spacer 135, the angle plates 134 and a compression key block 137 disposed in the U-piece as shown in fi, -. 31 and fig. 26 with a view to fixing it to a frame spar located at this point.
The side rails 123 and rear 124 have their vertical wings joined by an extension 138 of the side rails, which extension is curved to cover the vertical branch of the rear side member and be welded to it.
The rear panel 139 is formed by two side sections and a rear section welded to each other between the elements of a overlapping rib construction shown in FIG. 32. This construction consists of ribbing outwardly the overlapping edge of each key panel section, interlocking the two ribbed edges one into the other, and spot welding them as shown at 140.
By carrying out the welding with the aid of such a structure, the presence of depressions in the overlapped surface is avoided, since, in general, the rib projects on the general key level 1a. on face, and, besides being unlikely that depressions will appear in such a protruding face as a result of welding, it would be very easy, if they did occur, to remove them by general brushing. surface or flattening using a suitable file.
The depression can easily be reached in the narrow rib, while it can only be reached. -difficulty and to be eliminated only by a local lowering of a surface in tière when it is. formed in the body of the panel.
The lower edges of the rear panel thus formed are internally angled and welded to the underside of the rear side members as usual. The front edge is cut at an angle and shaped in a manner corresponding to the casing part 12.6, and the lower part of the side sections constitutes. wheel casings 141 (fig. 25 and 28). The outer edges have internal flanges welded to the bodies of post 128 and are both.
riveted and welded to these bodies and to the upper extensions 142- of the upright brackets specially shown fi-- 25. The upper edges of the rear panel are provided with a structure 143 extending inwardly and downward and having the shape of a a U turns its cavity inward and downward to receive the upper edge of the rear seat upholstery unit.
This U structure is formed by internally rounding the upper edge of the panel itself, as indicated at 144 (fig. 28), complementing the rounding. outer side wall 145 of a U-shaped piece 126 placed above, and by spot-welding the two pieces to each other through the interlocking parts 1.14, 1.15. The same distinct advantage is thus obtained as that described with respect to the overlapping rib joint. between the panel sections themselves as just described.
This top edge reinforcement extends around the entire top edge of the back panel except key ends. The superimposed piece is made of a metal thicker than the body of the panel, which provides greater strength and rigidity. In addition, the body of the panel itself is externally ribbed as seen at 147 to a greater extent, which provides even greater reinforcement of the top structure as well as the finish of the top panel.
At the ends of the panel, the rib 147 and the internally bent portion 145 are made more prominent, the internally bent portion being extended inward at least to the same extent as the. U 1.16 piece (fig. 29), which ensures the finish of the upper iron to the front edge of upright 128, and the upper iron is welded to post D at these points.
From the top of the wheel casings. 141 extend up either side of the rear portion of the struts 148 having upper ends folded inwardly and interlocked into PU of the structure of the upper iron 1.15, 146, etc., the ends you; lower of these spacers being welded to the wheel casing and their upper ends being riveted to the upper rail. These spacers 148 have the. form of a U in section and support in their U parts, near their upper ends, the upper iron sleeves 1490.
Between the Lon rear geron 12.1 and the upper iron, in the central plane of the. car, there is a similar spacer 1.19 which is similarly fixed and which, in this case, carries the device 150 (fig. 27) serving to fix the spare tire. In this way, the rear section is provided with a framework comprising side 123 and rear 12 side members:
1, the corner gusset construction, struts, 148 and 149, post brackets 125 with related post 128, strut 130 and top rim 145, 1-16, these elements being linked together. effectively not only directly them. to each other :, but indirectly through the outer panel itself.
The sections thus constructed; are fizf, c, s to each other by the joints 53, 54. Lc joint 53 is that formed between the side members. side and awning section. This seal is formed by cutting the bottom wall of the U section of the spar (fig. 4, 6 and 35) to form two lugs 151 and 152 extending forward on the walls. lateral external and internal., respectively. The outer ear carries an extension of the lower wing of the outer part of the spar.
This outer ear fits between the lower edge of the canopy side panel 105 and the body of the post base 120u as is clear from the cross section of FIG. 36, this ear fitting into the angle between the panel and its wing placed below. The inner ear 152 is extended so as to. come and cover it. vertical branch offset from the spar 121, The base 120b of the upright and the body of the long geron 121 are both deflected inwardly to match. the irregular shape of the lug 152 as a result of the threshold inclination of the main spar (Figs. 36 and 39).
An angle bar 153 (fig. 24 and 35, etc.) is welded to the rear face of the post base 120b and to the underside of the lower part of the U. lug 152 is riveted and welded to both the Lon geron. and on the. upright base 12011. The outer ear 151 is welded to. outside of panel 105.
The rear joints 54 are generally similar, although they are established, not directly with the rear side members, but with front extensions of said lon gerons, extensions formed by the cones of the uprights 128. In this case, as in the case of the anterior seals 53, the lower part of the U-section is removed to form wrapping ears 154, 155. The outer ear 154 covers the. the outer wall of the post section 127 of the bracket 125 of the post 128, and its end 156 is folded inwardly around the VU of this part.
The inner ear 155 is considerably longer and covers it. pa internal king of the. wheel wrap portion 126 to a considerable extent. Between the, lower wall of the upright U-section and the. the lower wall of the U-shaped part of the side member is welded to a reinforcing angle 157 (fig. 38, 37). The inner lug 155 is both welded and riveted to the wheel wrap portion 126. The outer lug 156 is riveted and welded through the gap of its internally folded portion to the U section of the upright.
These gaskets are simple, easy to fabricate, easy to assemble and complete. However, the enveloping of the bases of the uprights by the ears of the U-piece, the interlocking of the angles of these ears within the angles of the upright and wall bases and of the panels, together with the end-to-end layouts of adjoining edges make each joint rigid, sturdy and durable.
A construction in which the spar walls embrace adjacent framing members of the. The manner described provides all the advantages of a sleeve construction, without the need to specially extend the ends of the adjacent unit frames or the bases of the uprights to which the connection is directly established. Furthermore, this does not make a significant change in the construction that the stud bases receive in order to enable them to behave as such in the most favorable way.
