<tb>

l'extrémité supérieure d'une dé tente à ressort 91 dont l'extrémité inférieure est assujettie. par une vis à un montant 9_3. s'élevant du banc et pourvu d'un trou cylindrique à travers lequel passe le goujon :- la. fig. 6, le levier de commande d'eni- brZiyage 7 2 est bloqué dans la position où il empêche l'embravage de sr faire;

of this saw, in a due way this last strand binds not come into engagement with the piece to be cut.
The opposite, or free, end of the saw holder or arm 1 (is provided with a box 38 (fig. 1) which is also inclined relative to the vertical and is provided an opening 39 as well as a slide 40 in which can slide an adjustable bearing 41. To this bearing is fixed a screw 42 (fib. 5) which works in the hollow, threaded end of a shaft 43 turning.
and suitably held in a boss 44 extending from the end of the arm 16. The shaft 43 carries a flywheel 45 by means of which it can be rotated to adjust the bearing lengthwise relative to the arm. .
A ring pulley 46 is mounted, for the band saw,: on an axis -1: 7 rotating in bearings called bearing 41.
To ensure that pulley 46 is correctly positioned in <B> </B> position so that the saw tape 31 runs perfectly, special ball bearings are provided which allow angular adjustment cl (, the axis of the pulley 46 in the longitudinal plane of the axis of the arm 16, these bearings being such due to their axes always coinciding with that of the axis 47.
One of these roulenienls. which is closest to the pulley, comprises an internal raceway 48, secured to the axis 47 and provided with grooves for several rings of balls. The race (the outer bearing 49 is mounted in an internal recess of the bearing 41 and is clamped there by a plate 50, secured to the end of this bearing.
The inner face of the outer raceway comprises a segment of a hollow sphere which is engaged with the balls, so that the angular adjustment of the axis 47 will not influence the. axial relation of the ball bearing. clans soli together, with respect to this axis.
The other bearing for the axle 47. which is located at the outer end of the latter, comprises 1111 internal raceway 51 which is fixed on a portion of reduced diameter of said axle and has several ball grooves. 52 is slidable through slides formed in the end of said bearing 41 and is engaged on opposite sides with screws 53 and 54 which work through bosses extending inwardly from a cap 55 which is suitably secured to the end of the bearing 41. The outer race min has, likewise.
a spherical surface on which the balls roll; therefore, when adjusting the angular position of the axis 47, this does not disturb the axial relationship of the ball bearing with respect to this axis and jamming of this bearing is prevented.
Done, by this construction. we can; adjust the bearing as a whole to increase or decrease the tension on the saw and it is possible to angularly adjust the axis of the pulley to get the saw to run properly on it.
The endless saw wool. or tape, 5 () passes around pulleys 28 and 46, in the usual way, but it is provided with large and strong teeth, having hollows or notches of sufficient capacity to receive all. amount of material cut or removed by the respective teeth during their passage through the entire cutting field. whole. These teeth are of special construction, as will be described later.
Means are provided for producing a positive relative advance movement between the saw-holder frame and the work-holder and, in order to actuate the advance, several innovation transmission devices are provided, including Any one can be employed, as desired, to the exclusion of the others.
This positive forward movement is produced by means of a rack which is hinged to the saw frame, between the pivot support thereof and the soli end, and is closely adjacent to the fixed vice jaw, this rack being actuated by a pin which can be controlled by that, what conch. of the movement transmission mechanisms that we have chosen.
In the particular construction shown (fib. 6), the arm 16 is provided with the descending eye <B> 57, </B> to which is articulated a descending rod 58, the lower end of which is articulated to a bar of create mesh 59 sliding in slides 60 which descend from the bed of the machine.
The bar 59 is provided with a rack 61 with which engages a pinion 62 mounted on a tubular shaft 63 which rotates in a bearing 61 of a chair 65, descending from the liana of the. machine.
The opposite end of the tubular shaft 63 is provided with a clutch element 66 which abuts against the bearing 64 and has a clutch face 66, capable of cooperating with a complementary clutch face of a clutch sleeve 67 that is. mounted with tongue and groove on a shaft 68 rotating in one end of tubular shaft 63 and supported at its other end in a bearing 69 of a chair 70 which descends. likewise, from the bench of the. machine.
The sliding clutch sleeve. 6 7 shows the usual airway groove in which the key branches take the extreme fork 71 of a lever 7? which pivots, at 73, clans key ears 74 extending from the chair 65. The upper end of the arm 72 is connected to a rod 75 which extends rearwardly. below the machine bed, and is connected. by its opposite end, to the arm '-.' 6 of an angled lever, the other arm of which, 77.
is articulated to. a rod 78 provided with a poi:; born 79 located at. the front end key the machine. within reach of the operator.
Shaft 68 has a larger head. 80, which abuts against the end of the bearing 69 and a helical wheel 81 is attached to the shaft 68. at the opposite end of the bearing 69, the longitudinal movement of the air in the bearings being prevented by a nut. 82 which, screwed on this shaft, rests on the opposite face key the helinoid wheel 81.
Means are provided for automatically disengaging the clutch elements and 6 7 when the saw-holder frame has reached a predetermined position, at la. end of the. saw cut.
In the preferred construction shown here, the upper end of the lever "c2 is provided with a rounded lateral extension, or chin, <B> 8 </B>. With which can engage a cooperating ramp 8.1 formed on the 'offset end of a lever 85 which pivots on a shaft 86 carried by a console 8 7 rising from the key bench of the machine.
With the opposite end of lever 85 gripped the end of a screw 88 which is adjustable in a lug 89 extending laterally from connecting rod 58 and which is held in the goose position. regulated by a lock nut.
Since it is desirable for the clutch to be: positively held in gear, or without the key required, as the case may be, a detent is provided to secure the lever 72 in the clutch position and in the disengaged position . The upper end of lever 7? is provided, as shown, key two circular holes in one or the other of which one can engage the cylindrical pin 90 existing at.
the upper end of a spring thimble 91, the lower end of which is secured. with a single-post screw 9_3. rising from the bench and provided with a cylindrical hole through which the pin passes: - the. fig. 6, the wrapping control lever 72 is locked in the position where it prevents jamming from taking place;
but it goes without saying that when this lever is. ma- u wrought key so as to bring into engagement the elements of the clutch, it is also blocked in this new position by the penetration of the pin 90 in the other hole of the lever 7 ?, the end of the re stud being, of course.
tapered to allow the inanceuvre of the lever either by means of the positive key command key dis, or by the automatic disengagement device.
Any key movement transmission mechanism. such as a belt or a gear train, for example, can be used to rotate the helical wheel 81 in order to activate the pinion 6? which meshes with the rack 61. The transmission of control between the main shaft of the machine and the wheel 81 is made not only continuous and positive, but also uniform, for example by means of said wheel system. chain e1: of chains represented, which prevents any slipping or slipping.
In the particular construction shown, use is made of a series of transmission mechanisms, either of which can be brought into play at will to produce a uniform, continuous and positive feed at the required speed. under the conditions desired to perform the correlation referred to by the invention.
The mechanism shown for this purpose comprises a chain wheel 93 fixed to the main shaft 35 (fig. 4 and 6) and actuating a chain 94 which passes around a chain wheel 95 to which it transmits the movement and which is mounted on a drive shaft 96 supported in bearings of the uprights 18. Shaft 96 carries another chain wheel 97 which drives a chain 98 which in turn drives a wheel <B> to </B> chain 99 which spins on a shaft <B> 100 </B> fitted into lugs 101 extending laterally from the lower end of the chair 70.
The chain wheel 99 is provided with a recessed face 102, which does. lateral projection and which takes on a complementary face existing on one side of a toothed wheel 103, the other side of which is provided with a similar recessed face which takes on a complementary face existing on the following toothed wheel 104, of a series of progressively smaller gears 105, 1.06, 107 and 108, all of which are rigidly clamped together and can rotate on shaft 100 (Fig. 8).
The construction of the complementary recessed faces by means of which the chain wheel and the toothed wheels are thus rigidly secured together is shown in FIGS. 1.0 and 11 with regard to toothed wheel 103.
With the wheel forming a body, on one of its sides, a collar 109 diametrically hollowed out at 110, while, on the other side is a similar collar 111, diametrically hollowed out perpendicular to the recess 110 and, in the Evidcinent of the tie collar 111, are pinned Keys .112. This thus forms a complementary face because the keys 112 engage in the recess of the face of the wheel 102 and the recess 110 engages with the keys of the left toothed wheel.
The wheels .den tees 103 to 108 mesh. always, respectively, with complementary wheels 113: 114, 115, 116, 117 and 118 which can turn on: the extreme part,, hollow, of a shaft 119 journaling in lugs 120 and 121 extending laterally from the lower end of the chair 70 in the direction opposite to that in which the ears 101 extend.
The hollow end of the shaft 119 is provided with a flange 122 which abuts against the lug 120 and suitable spacers are provided between the respective gears to suitably confine the latter between the adjacent ends of the lugs. 120; : and 121.
The opposite end of the shaft 119 presents, inside the lug 121, a solid part 123 provided with an extension of reduced diameter, 124, carrying a worm 125 which meshes with the helical wheel 81 , mounted on the shaft 68. A collar 126 is interposed between the end of the worm 125 and the end of the lug 121 and a nut 127, screwed on the end of the reduced part 124 of the shaft 119, cooperates with the collar 122 of said shaft to prevent longitudinal movement of the latter in its spans.
All the toothed wheels 113 to 118 are, as has been said, always in engagement with the complementary wheels 103 - to 108, - resp., and means are provided by which one can, at will, connect any one wheels 113 to 118 to the shaft 119 to actuate the advance mechanism by means of one of the pairs of toothed wheels, to the exclusion of the other pairs, or sets, of these toothed wheels. For this purpose, a bar 128, sliding in the hollow end of the shaft 119, carries a transverse stick 129 which is.
normally pushed back by a spring 130 lo:; é in a recess of the man, an- heavy of an ankle whose. head. engages the wall. of the hollow part of the shaft 119. The outer end of the man is closed so as to present flats (fig. 7 and 9) to engage, or take, in hollow rows provided in the toothed wheels 113 it 118, it is provided with bevelled edges which allow the snowman to be moved from one wheel to another.
The flat faces of snowman 129 engage the walls (the one slot <B> 131 </B> extending lengthwise of the hollow portion of shaft 119.
The outer end of the rod 128 has the shape of a cylindrical rack 132, with which engages a pinion 133 fixed on a divider shaft 13-1 which is mounted, by one end, in a bearing 135 of the chair 70 and, at a point adjacent to its other end, there is a chair 136 descending from the machine bed and provided with a sector <B> 137 </B> for 1 u of a series of holes (not shown)
in which can engage a spring trigger <B> 138 </B> which is connected to the handle 139 of an arm secured to the end of the divider shaft 134. In this way, by running through to the.
handle 139 an arc of a circle, the shaft 13-1 can be rotated, which thus rotates the pinion 133 and actuates, through the, rack 132, the rod 128 to bring the man 129 into engagement with the toothed wheel chosen from the series of wheels 1.13 to 118, in order to produce the rate of advance required to effect the desired correlation.
In order to effect the desired correlation, aimed at by the invention, the speed of the saw can be varied in any usual manner whatever; in fig. 3, there is shown a simple dis position of speed change which fulfills this purpose.
The control belt 1.10, for the fixed and idle pulleys 36 and <B> 37 </B> of the main shaft 35 of the machine passes over a wide pulley 141, mounted on a transmission shaft 1-12. Stepped pulleys, or cones. steps, 143 and 14.1, arranged on the shaft 142 and on the motor shaft 145 are connected by a belt 146, so that, by moving the: belt 146, the speed can be varied at will.
In this way and with notches of the desired capacity in the saw blade bed, the action of the saw can be adjusted so as to be able to cut any kind of material and achieve that the teeth of the saw cut, or remove, material from continuous shavings similar to those produced by a cutter or a planer, instead (the usual granular particles produced by (the ribbon, feed type under the aetiott of gravity, for sawing metals.Because of this construction,
each tooth of the saw is actuated within the limits of its cutting capacity and. with maximum efficiency and cutting speed. as well (given the accuracy of the cut made, are much more marked than in previous constructions.
To provide a means of preventing the saw from digging or "stalling" when its teeth engage a point giving the cut less resistance than that of the main part of the mass of material. to saw, there is provided a balancing means normally tending to raise the saw in anta._onisme to the action of the mechanis me in advance.
The device shown here for this purpose comprises an arm 1-17 which is attached to the rear end of the saw-carrying frame and is suitably connected to the outer end of a tensile spring 1-18, the end of which is internal is connected to the frame (the machine.
Note also that the saw is still prevented from, digging or engaging in this way by the way the support arm 16 is. mounted, the pivot 35 of this arm being above the cutting edge of the saw. Therefore, whether the feed (the saw relative to the workpiece carrier is a positive uniform motion throughout the extent of the cutting field, as is preferable, or whether it is semi-positive, as is the case when a means is provided to allow sliding.
saw meets a point or place (the material which offers great resistance, many advantages of this construction are ensured because the saw is prevented from having a depth of penetration greater than that determined in advance, in the full extent of the cutting field.
To prevent the operator from clamping in the vice a part of greater width than that corresponding to the cutting capacity of the saw at the advance rate which has been chosen, the mechanism shown in FIGS. 12 and 13. In this arrangement, the movable vice jaw 8 is provided with a sole 149 working in slides 150 formed in the lower part of the work table 4.
A series of stops 151 which can go and ven vertically in suitable openings of the. bench 2-3 of the machine are seen, at their lower ends, of forks 152, integral with them, whose branches, 153 and 154, straddle the viewfinder shaft 134. The forks 152 are for views, on one of their sides. of rollers 155 which work in the grooves 156 of cams <B> 157 </B> which are keyed on the shaft 134.
The various calms 157 are arranged in such a way, on this shaft, that the successive stops 151 will be caused to protrude above the surface of the work holder and on the path of the sole 149 of the movable jaw 8 according to the motion transmission mechanism which has. been chosen to operate the ru ban saw. Thus, when the handle <B> 139, </B> which controls the divider shaft 134 is operated, to choose a particular gear, the corresponding stop 151 will be raised on the path of the mobile vice jaw 8 so that we can not remove it from the fixed jaw 6 by an amount greater than. the maximum cutting capacity for the chosen feed rate.
In this way, we prevent indiscriminate use of the machine and abuse of the saw.
To guide the saw blade so as to direct it exactly through the cutting field, perpendicular to the plane of the work holder, similar arms 158 and 159 are secured to the saw frame 16, from which they hang. One of these arms, 158 for example, is rigidly mounted on the frame, while the other, 159 for example,. is adjustable on this frame and can be moved closer and apart from the first one. In the arrangement shown, the arm 159 slides in a slideway 160 of the frame 16 and is held in the desired adjustment position by a clamping screw 161.
The guide devices consist of a pair of rollers and the construction shown is the same for each of the arms. In each case, a bracket 162 is mounted on the lower end of the arm by means of a key 163, so as to be able to be adjusted laterally on this arm, and is held in place by a bolt 164. Each bracket carries, on vertical axes 165, a pair of guide rollers 166. The two pairs of rollers thus act to keep the saw perpendicular to the workpiece @ to be sawn and to the workpiece and to guide it exactly through the cutting field.
As has been said, the work holder extends on both sides of the path of the saw and, providing clamping members to engage with the workpiece. saw and hold it positively on both sides of the saw blade or band, the tendency of the saw to deviate, due to slight sagging of the free end of the small workpiece, whether solid or tubular, is avoided in particular when use is made, for the saw, of guide means of the type described above.
It has already been said that the particular type of saw employed in a band saw machine of this type is provided with greasy teeth having the recesses or notches of sufficient capacity to receive all the quantity of material cut by the respective teeth. tives during their passage through the maximum cutting field and it has been found in practice that saws with sixteen to twenty-eight large teeth per decimetre will cut, when correlated with other factors, in accordance with the stated principle, by making .. quickly and exactly, a real cut, without removing by abrasion, -or file, the. metal of the <B> a </B> workpiece.
Although any suitable coarse-toothed saw can be used, since the various factors correlate with the capacity of the notches, it is advisable to use a special arrangement of the tang blade whose thickness gradually decreases from edge to back and which is provided with a series of large chisel-shaped teeth, as shown, by way of example, in Figs. 14 and 15, in which it is seen that the blade saw blade 167 gradually decreases in thickness from the edge 168 of the teeth <B> 169 </B> to the back 170, the teeth 169 being chisel-shaped, the back 171 of the tooth being tilted,,
in relation to the plane of the sharp edges, sufficient to provide the necessary clearance from and to the end. get lost in a steeply sloping section <B> 172, </B> which itself merges into a curved notch 173 which, in turn, joins the anterior face, or front, 174, of the tooth next.
A saw thus established not only has strong and rigid teeth, but is also of such a nature that the teeth can be sharpened again, when they come not to cut, and be returned to their original cutting efficiency.
To apply a liquid lubricant to the saw as it passes through the cut, a flexible pipe 17; 1 is provided, carried by an upright 176 fixed on the frame located near the cut line, or sexing.
A sawing machine constructed as described above functions, in practice, to cut metal very efficiently at high speed and making a real cut, distinguishing between filing or removing. of metal by abrasion. Because of this true cutting action, the life of the saw is extended indefinitely. In addition, due to the uniformity of the feed, the time required to cut a given part can be determined at. advance with great accuracy.
By providing notches of the desired capacity in the saw and correlating this capacity with the various other factors, metal of any hardness or strength can be cut very efficiently. There is. also a minimum loss of material, which is important in the case of expensive material, because this type <B> (le, </B>: had cloiiiie 1111 draft (the saw relatively narrow compared to other very cutting modes The machine alite is.
therefore economical and efficient.
