constitué par une ehev ille reliée à rotule à un plongeur irionté coulissant dans un cylindre f', percé clan;

Rocket shells with clockwork movement. The subject of the invention is a shell fuze with a clockwork movement adjustable to a small fraction of a second and which can be adapted either in the warhead of a double-effect shell, or in the base of a shell. delayed percussion shells.
This fuze is characterized by a rotary trigger which normally retains the firing pin in the armed position and which is actuated by the clock movement tilting the trajectory of the shell, so as to come into a position where it abandons the shell. striker to the action of its spring at a desired point of the trajectory (the shell, the key reed the stroke that must describe this organ to abandon the striker can be adjusted before firing by rotating in the tip of the rocket a key for winding the mainspring of the clockwork movement in the opposite direction to this winding and by means for adjusting the flow of the motive force actuating the key trigger member and for compensating for the key action the centri fuge force, due to the rotation of the shell.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention, intended to be adapted in the eye of a double-acting shell so as to constitute the warhead.

In this form, the body a of the rocket is in two parts screwed together (fig. L). It has at its periphery a threaded annular portion al making it possible to fix the fuse clans l 'eye of the shell and an annular groove aê intended to cooperate with the fixing grif fes of an adjustment and reassembly device.
In its axis, from front to back, the body a is pierced: with a cylindrical opening with a conical flared head, a cylindrical housing a4 for the front part of the watch movement, a a5 cylindrical housing of larger diameter for the rear part of the clockwork movement, of a cylinder a6 in which the primer-holder masselotto works when the rocket is working, with percussion and a tapped opening a7 in which is screwed the detonator case.
s8 and a9 indicate screws arranged radially inside the body a to as to prevent any axial displacement of the key or the spindle, and a9 to immobilize in the housing a5 a cylindrical casing b, having an opening bÚ, clans which engages the end forming the cylindrical bearing surface of the screw a9. This casing is made up of two semi-cylindrical cheeks. molded by the process of injection under pressure of a part with flanges b2 projecting internally and as seemed by any suitable means and a bottom b3, fixed by means of countersunk screws b4. c indicates the striker, which is hand held in its armed position under the action of a key spring by a part of the clockwork movement up to the desired point of the trajectory (the shell.
This firing pin slides when it is released in a guide sleeve cê. c indicates a notch provided at the front end of the firing pin to cooperate with the trigger member of the clockwork movement which retains the cocked firing pin until the shell has reached the desired burst point. c4 indicates the point of the striker. d designates the primer carrier weight housed in the cylinder a6 dÚ the primer and d2 the sleeve screwed into the ta raudée opening a 'containing the fulminate detonator d.
During transport and handling of the shell, the weight d is immobilized at the bottom of the cylinder a6, so that the primer d 'cannot approach the tip c4, by a centrifugal bolt e.
This lock is made up of a plunger that can slide in a radial cylindrical opening, closed on the outside by means of a plug (, \, screwed into the body a. Until the moment when the lock is released). e is maintained (lins its active position by a counter-lock f.
constituted by an ehev ille connected to a ball joint to an irionté plunger sliding in a cylinder f ', drilled clan;
b, body a parallel to the axis of the rocket and closed by means of a screw cap f2. Normally this counter-lock is held in its active position by a spring f3 bearing against the plug f2, but when the blow starts, the inertia recalls it back against the action of the spring f3 and the ball-joint pin, comes under the action of the centri fuge force, to coincide with the bottom of the cylinder fÚ (fig. 18 and 18bis) which makes any new operation of the counter-bolt f impossible.
In the cylindrical housing a4 are braced by means of sleeves g, mounted on four pillars gÚ, three small superimposed plates h cÚ and hê (fig. 2 and 3), while inside the cylindrical housing b are braced by means of sleeves g2, mounted on four pillars g3, four large superimposed plates h h4 and h6, embedded between a shoulder formed by the ogival point (the rocket and the bottom b of the casing b. The plate la ' is reinforced by means of a steel disc la '.
In addition to the sleeves g and g2, two circular buttresses are used for bracing the plates intended to support the greatest loads, respectively g4 between the plates hl and h2 and g5 between the plates h3 and h4, which support the central part of hl and h3 plates. The dif ferent components of the clockwork mechanism are distributed over these seven plates and on the bottom b3 of the housing b. This clockwork mechanism comprises a trigger member normally retaining the firing pin in the armed position.
This member consists of a firing pin retaining disc i, fixed to a sleeve il, freely mounted on a screw with bearing i2 (fig. 19), screwed into the bottom b3 of the housing b. This disc i has at its periphery a semi-circular notch i3 and a stop finger i4, which comes to rest against the striker c when the fuse is adjusted for its maximum lumps setting which is 100 seconds (fig. 11 ). The striker c is immobilized in its armed position as long as it is the full periphery of the disc i which is engaged in the notch c3 and is released when the notch i3 exactly embraces it.
To allow the fuze to be adjusted for times of less than 00 seconds duration, an adjustment mechanism is used which allows to decrease the angle which must be described, in a clockwise direction, the disc i so that the notch i3 comes into the percutter release position. This adjustment mechanism is controlled by means of a key k, split k1, housed in the opening a3, formed in the axis of the tip of the fuze (fig. 1). This key has at its periphery an annular groove k2, of triangular section, which cooperates with the conical point of the screw a8, so as to prevent any axial displacement of the key in its housing, while allowing its rotation.
The key is made integral by means of a tenon and mortise assembly of a toothed wheel k3, freely mounted on a cylindrical tenon k4, fixed by means of a screw on the small upper plate or plate of the key h . This wheel kc3 (fig. 4) is in constant mesh, on the one hand, with a toothed wheel k5 (the role of which will be described later) and, on the other hand. with a toothed wheel k6, which actuates a wheel l of the adjustment mechanism via a wheel k7.
The wheels k 'k' and k7 are mounted freely on screws à. load kg screwed into the plate h. while the wheel <I> l </I> is freely mounted on a shaft 11, which pivots at its upper end under a bridge V and at its lower end in the. large plate 11.4. The wheel 1 (Figs. 12 and 13) carries on its underside a wolf tooth crown, with which is resiliently held in engagement.
by a spring 1û bearing on the <B>, </B> small lower plate h '. a crown -1i opposite wolf teeth l3, freely mounted in the axial direction on a square portion 14 of the shaft h. This shaft carries at its lower end a toothed wheel l.
Thanks to this arrangement, the shaft 11 is only driven by the wheel 1 in one direction of rotation (clockwise).
that is, when the key k is turned anti-clockwise. When the key k is turned in the direction (clockwise, the teeth of the crown l3 erase like pawls against the action of the spring l2 without driving the shaft l1.
The wheel l6 actuates a pinion l7, wedged on the square upper end of an axially movable shaft 13 and maintained normally in engagement with the wheel l6 (fig. 12) by a spring l9, resting on the large plate las and acting through an opening h made in the large plate h4. under a washer 11, arranged under the pinion the. In this clutch position of the wheel l6 with the pinion l7, the shaft b3 pivots at its upper end in the large upper plate la3 and by its tubular lower end around a cylindrical tenon that l12 screwed onto the large lower plate hc.
This tubular lower end carries a pinion l13, which is then engaged with a wheel n, wedged on a shaft n1, which pivots, on the one hand, under the large plate h5 and. on the other hand, on the base b3 (see housing b. As this wheel n belongs to the motor train driven by the spring as soon as the clock movement is started up, we have.
means provided for automatically disengaging this wheel from the adjustment mechanism when the stroke is started, so that the mainspring does not have to unnecessarily drive all the key cogs this mechanism during its operation. These means are constituted by the shaft 13 itself, which moves axially under the action of inertia against the action of the spring 19 at the start of the stroke and takes the position shown proud. 13, position in which there is a double release, on the one hand. between the wheel l6 and the pinion @ 7 and, on the other hand, between the pinion @ 13 and the n chi driving gear wheel.
On the large plate h4 is also fixed at @ 14 a flat spring @ 15 whose free end in the form of a fork @ 16 is normally maintained in the armed position (fig. R) against the washer hl, and comes to ignite the upper end of shaft 18 in order to form a stop for pinion @ 7 preventing this pinion from engaging again with wheel le.
Shaft ii, 1 carries, on the other hand, wedged near its lower end, a rat pinion in constant mesh with the lower teeth of a large crown n3. This crown rests on a circular support which has been manufactured with the bottom b3 of the casing b and has a flange n5 having a bulge n4 and serving to keep it exactly centered in the axis of the rocket on this support.
When the key k is actuated in its adjustment direction, the adjustment mechanism being engaged as shown in fig. 12, this crown is therefore driven in the direction of the needles of a watch.
At each revolution, it thus advances a notch a seven-tooth disc i5 by means of a drive lock n6 which it carries under its underside. This disc i5 being mounted fixed on the tubular shaft it is integral with the disc i key retained from the striker, which is thus driven in the direction of clockwise key so that the notch i3 is brought close to the angle wanted from his firing pin release position.
When you operate the <I> the </I> key in the opposite direction, that is to say in the direction of clockwise. the toothed wheel k5 drives in a clockwise direction a toothed rode o (fig. 4) mounted freely on a shaft ol which pivots, on the one hand, under the bridge k9 and, on the other hand, in the large turntable h4. This wheel o (fi g. 14 and 15) carries on its lower face a crown <B> with </B> key wolf teeth, which is held elastically by a spring 62 bearing on the small lower plate h2, a toothed crown (the opposite wolf o3, mounted freely in the axial direction on a square portion o <B> '</B> of the shaft o1.
This shaft presents near its lower end a square srcoiicl o ', on which a pinion o' can slide atial.
normally maintained in engagement with a wheel fentc-e <B> 010, </B> against the action (the disengaging spring # @, eo "supported by the small plate inff @ - upper e2, by a support mobile o 'presents its free end a fork W3 which embraces the shaft o1 and pivoting at its other end around one of the pillars g'.
At the start of the stroke, this support pivots under the action of centrifugal force on the large plate h4 (fig. 8) and the bones fork withdrawing leaves the pinion o6 to the action directed from top to bottom of the spring. o9. The winding mechanism then takes the disengaged position shown in fig. 15.
The arrangement of the wolf teeth of the crown o3 is such that the shaft o1 is only pulled out when the key k is operated in a clockwise direction. At this moment, the pinion o6 being, in engagement with the toothed wheel o10, the latter is driven to rotate in the anti-clockwise direction by driving the central motor shaft p of the clockwork movement in its rotation. , on a square portion p1 in which it is mounted in a countersink in the large upper plate 1h3.
The shaft p pivots, on the one hand (fig. 3), on the reinforcement disc la 'of the plate h6, in a central opening of the latter and, on the other hand, under a counter-pivot washer p2, screwed under the small lower plate h2. When it is driven by the winding wheel o 'in the opposite direction of clockwise, the shaft p drives in this movement a sleeve p3, also mounted on its square portion. To this sleeve is fixed cl p4 the free end of the mainspring p3 of the clockwork movement. The other end of this spring is fixed to a barrel p6, embedded by means of a flange p7 in the four posts g3 between the large plates la 'and h5.
fit, the cover of this barrel is formed by the plate h4 itself, while the bottom ground p8, on which the sleeve p3 rests, is perforated in a lightening aim (fig. 9) and is made integral with the plate h3 by the flange p7 which forms its external extension.
To prevent the motor shaft from turning clockwise under the action (the sound comes out during reassembly and after this has been done, a disengaged ratchet mechanism is used. placed on the large plate h4 (fig. 8). This mechanism comprises a ratchet wheel with four teeth p9, mounted on the. square portion p1 of the shaft p between a washer hl "and the plate W and a ratchet p10 pivotally mounted on the movable support o7 of the pinion o6 in a milling of this support.
Until the moment of the start of the blow, the support o 'of the pinion o6 is kept worm rusty in its active position against the action of a leaf spring pl1 (fig. 8) by the cylindrical tenon p of a spring lock arranged parallel to the axis of the rocket.
This lock (fig. 16) has the shape of a cylindrical che town q, having a portion of larger diameter q1 and a threaded lower end q2, onto which a nut q3 is screwed. The lock spring q4 acts under this nut and rests against the bottom of a hollow inverted plug q3, riveted in the large lower plate 76.
The lock is slidably mounted in the axis of a sleeve q6 fixed on the large plate h5 and is guided: the rod of small diameter q in the corresponding openings made in the large plates h. ' and 7t'1 and the enlarged portion q1 by the four claws forming the springs q 'of a split acorn q8, screwed inside the sleeve q'.
At the start of the blow, the latch overcomes the action of the spring q 'and comes by inertia to take the position shown in fig. 16bis .. position in which it is then blocked by the claws q '.
The support o 'of the pinion o' is then released and comes to take under the action of the centrifugal force developed by the rotation on itself (the shell. Its position (rest, abandoning. On the one hand, the motor shaft p a, the action of the spring (the clockwork movement and. on the other hand. the pinion o 'to the action of the release spring o'.
The pawl p ". When it is in its active position (fio% 8), can turn [the soli pivot only clockwise, against the action of a res- return exit p1e, so as to allow the motor spring to be reassembled, in the opposite direction, it abuts against the edge of the recess in which it is housed.
To regularize the flow of the driving force from the moment when the driving shaft p is released by the pawl p1 and at the same time to compensate for the action of the centrifugal force on the coils of the driving spring, a mechanism is used counterweight regulator, housed at the front of the rocket between the small plates the h1 and ha2.
This regulating mechanism is mechanically connected to the motor shaft p by means of a toothed wheel r (fig. 3) mounted freely on a hollow sleeve r1, mounted in turn on the square portion p1 of the central shaft p between the small plate h2 and the re-assembly wheel o10 around the counter-pivot washer p2.
The wheel r has a wolf tooth crown r2 on its lower face, Tai meshes in a direction of rotation with the corresponding wolf teeth of a crown o11 presented by the upper face of the winding wheel o10.
During winding, that is to say when the wheel o10 is driven in an anti-clockwise direction, the wolf teeth of the crown r2 are erased against the action of a ratchet spring r3, mounted on the sleeve r1 and resting under the small lower plate ha2.
On the other hand, when the shaft p is released and driven by the driving force in the direction of clockwise, the wheel r turns integrally with it and actuates a pinion r '(fig. 7) wedged on a shaft r5, which pi votes by its two ends respectively under the small plate l1 and on the large upper plate la3.
On this shaft r5 is wedged, above the small lower plate 7a2, a wheel r6 (fig. 6) driving a multi-multiplier gear train comprising a pinion r 'and a wheel r8 wedged on a shaft r9; an r10 pinion and an r11 wheel set on an r12 shaft and an r13 pinion and an r14 wheel set on an r13 shaft. The shafts r9 r12 and r1s pivot between the small plates hl and ha2.
The governor flywheel ri6 is driven by the last wheel r14 using drive teeth r17. This flywheel pivots in the axis of the rocket by its lower end in a pivot r18, formed in the center of the small lower plate h2 and by its upper end in a pivot r19, formed in the center of a drum r20. This drum is housed in the axis of the rocket between the small plates la and hl. It has a flange r21 in which are formed four notches cooperating with four flat-head screws r22 to prevent it from turning on itself.
The flywheel r16 carries on its front face two centrifugal counterweights r23, <I> pivoted </I> to one (their ends on this face around <B> </B> two countersunk head screws r24, diametrically opposed. Until the moment of the start of the shot, the steering wheel r16 is immobilized by means of a lock r25 constituted by the side finger of a small plate j26 pivotally mounted on the small plate hl around a screw r27.
The lock r2 "is held in the active position against the action of a return spring r23 by the cylindrical end r" of a locking device r3 operating by inertia at the start of the blow against the action of a spring antagonist in a manner analogous to the locking organ q- j "previously described and shown separately (Fig. 16).
But, unlike the latter, the rusting worm organ r3 ", not possessing a claw acorn, is returned to its original position by its spring as soon as the inertia effect ceases.
The tenon r2 then comes to be placed behind an extension of the plate 72 "so as to prevent the latch r2" from again immobilizing the steering wheel r2 ".
The spring 7-2g is wound by one turn around the screw r2 'and bears by one of its ends against one of the bracing sleeves y, while its end libn # presses against an ankle r31 projecting vertically on the plate r2E.
In the active position, the lock r2 'enters a notch r32, inéna.-ée at the peripliery of the steering wheel r16. Drum r2 is milled to allow passage to lock r23.
When, at the start of the blow, the plate r26 is released by the pin r29, it takes, under the action of centrifugal force, the position shown in fig. 17 and the flywheel r16 can then be driven by the wheel r14. The peg r29 then immobilizes the plate r26 in this position as soon as the inertia effect ceases.
The transmission of the driving force of the spring, regulated by the flywheel r16, to the crown r3 periodically driving the retaining organ i of the striker is effected by a driving mechanism arranged between the large plates 7a5 and la6.
This mechanism comprises a toothed wheel s, keyed by means of a key s1 on a cylindrical portion pl3 of larger diameter of the central shaft p. Between the large plate h5 and this wheel s is interposed, on the shaft p, a spacer washer s2. The wheel meshes (fig. 10) with the first pinion s3 of a multiplier gear train. This pinion s3 is wedged on a shaft s4 which carries, on the other hand, a wheel s3. This wheel s3 meshes with a second pinion s 'wedged on a shaft s', which integrally bears, on the other hand, a wheel is. The latter meshes with a third pinion s0, wedged on a shaft s10, integrally carrying a wheel s1l. The three shafts s' S7 and s10 pi vote, on the one hand, under the large plate 15 and, on the other hand, on the large lower plate M.
The wheel i11 meshes with a wheel s1t mounted freely on the portion of largest diameter p13 of the motor shaft p under the wheel s and on a flange p14 of the shaft p.
This wheel s12 has at its lower part, around the flange p14, an 80 tooth wolf tooth crown gear s13 (fig. 3) which drives when it turns clockwise, at the by means of a ratchet s14 with three cut teeth, forming springs (fig. 22) a sleeve s15 mounted freely on the lower cylindrical portion of the motor shaft p between the flange p14 and the large lower plate h6. The pawl s14 is welded or fixed in any suitable manner on the sleeve s13, which carries at its lower part a pinion toothing s1 '. This pinion meshes with a wheel s17, integral with a pinion s13, mounted on a seat screw s19 'screwed into the large lower plate lh6.
The pinion s18 in mesh with the wheel n, mounted on the shaft n1, integral with the drive pinion in2 of the crown n3. It therefore drives the latter, which, being on leaving manufacture, adjusted in position so that sot toc r6 is in the position shown in fig. 11, should describe an almost complete turn on itself before advancing by one notch the assembly formed by the two superimposed discs i and i5. To prevent the latter from being moved irregularly between two successive actuations by the crown ra3, a locking device controlled by the crown is used so that the upper disc i @ is only released on each passage of the toc n6.
This latching device (fig. 20 and 21) comprises a flat spring t whose fixed end is embedded between the reinforcing disc lh7 and the bottom b3 of the casing b and the free end of which can work in a cutout provided. in the disc h7 and carries on its lower face a pawl finger, interior C, cooperating with a circular series of holes i ', formed in the disc i', and an external actuator finger t2, cooperating with a cam ri ', formed on the rim n' of the crown w.
The cam <I> W </I> being, on the one hand, facing the toc rte and each hole i 'being located, on the other hand, facing one of the seven teeth (read disc i' , each random release of the disc i 'coincides with its driving by one notch in the direction of the hands of a watch.
To prevent accidents from occurring during handling of the shell, in the event that the clockwork is started by mistake, use extra safety to prevent the notch from coming in. surround the percussion, that is to say release the latter as long as the shell has not been fired and has not come out of the muzzle. This safety is achieved by means of a ring u, slidably mounted on the guide sleeve of the striker c2 and maintained normally applied under the bottom b3 of the housing b by a coil spring u3, bearing, on the other hand, on the primer holder d.
This ring ii, carries a pin u1 projecting normally forwards parallel to the axis of the rocket and four claws forming a spring u2 normally projecting radially.
The free end of each of these girdles is hook-shaped on the outside (the way to be able to snap under an annular rim d4 present by a cylindrical extension of the weight d, when, under the action of the 'inertia, the ring ui is driven backwards at the start of the stroke, despite the antagonistic action of the spring u3 When this recoil of the ring ii occurs (the pin u1, which was normally engaged in a corresponding opening made through the bottom b3 of the housing b so that its free end is in the path of a stopper i7, presented by the rear surface of the disc i, moves away from the trajectory of this stopper i ',
which means that the disc i can then release the striker.
The stopper i7 is arranged with respect to the notch i3 so as to make it possible to effect all the planned adjustments before firing, while preventing the release of the firing pin.
When the effect of inertia ceases, the peg <B> PI </B> cannot return to the path of the ta quet i7, because the ring u is then gripped by the weight of venule shown freezes. 18 and 18bis.

The mobile parts of the rocket occupy the respective positions shown in FIG. 2 to 11, the fuze is screwed in the ordinary way in the eye of the shell, then reassembled and adjusted by means of a special device, serving to make the key k describe a very exact number of turns and (the fractions of a turn clockwise for reassembly and counterclockwise for adjustment.
The maximum rotation (which is key 20 turns) printed with the key in the direction (clockwise transmits to the central shaft p, through the mechanism (winding o-o11 (seen separately in fig. . 14 and 15) a rotation of eight turns in an anti-clockwise direction (one clockwise, without dragging the crown n3 and the regulation handwheel r16 by means of the irreversible gears 1 d3, o11, r and s13 s14 s15 .
If the time setting must be (the 100 secon of the (maximum) no adjustment is necessary. If it closes to be half a second (minimum) then it is necessary to make describe with the key k, by means of the aforementioned apparatus, a rotation of 20 turns anti-clockwise Between these two limits there are 9,950 intermediate adjustment positions corresponding to every hundredths of a second between tre and 100 seconds.
Let us suppose the case of the adjustment of the rocket for the setting to, minimum time (one '/. 2 seconds: the? 0 turns printed with the key k. In the counter direction (clockwise transmits tent to the crown ü3, via the adjustment mechanism (seen separately in fig. 1? and:

While this adjustment is being made, the winding mechanisms. motor and regulation, are separated from the mechanism (the adjustment, respectively by the irreversible gears o, o3. s13 si 4 s1s and o11 r.
In this case 'of setting the minimum time of one i¸ second, it is not necessary to mount the mainspring, the two to three turns in reserve ample enough to make the crown n3 describe, in one step. second. the remaining fraction of a turn necessary to drive the retaining disc i and cause the release of the striker.
In the intermediate adjustment positions between these two limits, the angle of rotation imprinted with key 1 clockwise for winding varies between 0 and 20 turns, while the corresponding angle printed in reverse order for the setting varies from 20 turns to 0. The numerical sum (the two angles for each setting must always make 20 turns or 360 X 20 = 7200e.
The fuze being adjusted and reassembled (or only adjusted in the case of the minimum time setting of i second and only re-assembled in the case of the maximum time setting of 100 seconds) no accident is to be expected. crain dre during the assembly of the rocket on the bus. transport and handling of the latter and loading.
thanks to the inertia safeguards formed by the locking pins fq r29 and u1 the first three immobilizing the centri fuge bolts eo 'and r26 respectively, while the last prevents the firing pin retaining disc from releasing the latter when 'accidental operation of the clockwork movement until the shot is fired.
At the start of the shot and while the shell passes through the barrel, all these safeguards function under the action either of inertia or of centrifugal force in such a way that when the shell leaves the muzzle of the barrel, the mechanism The motor mechanism of the clockwork movement is released and comes into action immediately, the adjustment and winding mechanisms being disengaged as shown in fig. 13 and 15, while the disc i is then released by the latch 2c1 and can, therefore, reach its position of release from the firing pin.
The rotation of the motor shaft p is then regulated by the regulating flywheel r16, whose counterweights r23 come under the action of the centrifugal force in contact with the lower surface of the drum ale and thus determine a braking force which is proportional to the angular speed acceleration of the flywheel r18 due to the action of centrifugal force on the coils of the mainspring.
The driving force of the shaft p thus regulated is transmitted via the multiplier gear train s13-s11 to the ring gear s18, which has 80 teeth. so that for eight revolutions of the motor shaft p, this ring gear performs 125 revolutions in 100 seconds.
Since this s13 crown wheel describes 125 revolutions in 100 seconds and has 80 teeth, it will describe:
