Fig. 4 is a detail view of the second form.
In this drawing the connections marked in thick lines are used for carrying the control current of the vehicle while the connections marked in thin lines are those of the control device.
In fig. 1, 1 indicates the internal combustion engine set to operate at maximum efficiency. A generator 2 is directly actuated by this primary motor 1 and is controlled by a rheostat-regulator 3 which will be described later. Using this rheostat-regulator 3, the generator is maintained at constant power, regardless of variations in voltage or intensity of the installation.
The electric power is supplied by main conductors 4 and 5 't through a device of
EMI0001.0025
street battery 10 is mounted on the main conductors d and 5 in series with the generator 2, the connections comprising a main key 7, an ampere hour meter 11 placed between the main line 5 and battery 10, an automatic switch 12, a second automatic switch 9 (the operation of these two iliterrUpers will be described later).
Current from the battery is used when starting the vehicle to operate generator 2 as a starting motor for the engine. internal combustion 1 and to simultaneously operate the propulsion engines A and a.
The installation is first of all controlled by the main switch 7, shown here as the intended plug, when it is in place. to connect three contacts 13, 15 and 1d, respectively constituting the terminal of the line 5 of the generator, the terminal of a battery conductor 16 passing through the counter 11 of am per-hours and the terminal of a conductor 6 @ closing the circuit d, 5. The other terminal of the battery is connected to the main conductor d by a conductor lb.
A line 18 connects the main conductor 4: r one of the terminals of each of the two coils 70-72. 71-73 of the automatic switch 12. The terminal 7'2 of one of these coils is connected to an open contact 76 on the face of the ampere-hour meter, the other side of the contact being connected by a wire 19 to the main conductor 5.
The automatic switch 12 is shown in detail in FIG. 2. It has the two coils 70-72, 71-73 and a common core armature 12 \ 1 on which there is an insulating sleeve 30 which in turn carries a contact ring 31 of metal.
The amber 31 and the adjacent part of the sleeve 3U have two differential wax grooves which constitute seats for two contacts 32 subjected to the action of springs and interposed in the conductor 13 through which the coils î </ B> O-72, 71-73 are energized, as are the coils 19 and 20 of two switches 19 i,? 01, electrically controlled,
are respectively interposed in the main con cluite 5, as will be described later. When the core 12 @ is attracted to the right by the coil 71- "r3, the circuit will be closed by the conductor 18 and by the conductor ring 31, while when pulled to the left by coil 70 72 the circuit is interrupted by insulating sleeve 30. Spring contacts 32 hand hold the core at either of its two positions and prevent its accidental displacement.
The ampere-hour counter, as in fig. 3 shows it, has the usual faceplate and the dial divided to indicate the state of charge of the battery. The contacts 76 are disposed on the dial in the fully loaded position, while the contacts 75 are mounted so as to be movable around the dial between limits which depend on the service of the vehicle.
When the meter needle is at the full load position, the. contact 76 is closed, the coil 70-12) of the switch 12 is energized, the insulating part 3o is pushed to the left to cut the conductor 15, as indicated, and interrupt the circuit of the coils 19 and 20.
The contact strips of the two switches 1P,? P then fall and open the circuit of the main conductor between the contacts \ 31 and 23, which absolutely disconnects the generator from this circuit and opens the engine ignition circuit at 22, while that the contacts 2d-25 remain cil relation by the protective resistance of -de- niai-page 26.
In this way the internal combustion engine is stopped and the generator switched off, so that the vehicle will be operated by the battery alone, until the discharge of the latter has reached a predetermined degree. by adjusting the moving contacts 75.
Terminal 73 of coil 71-73 is connected to contacts 75 of the mother-hour counter. When the needle of the latter passes over the contacts 75, they are momentarily

which then actuates the motor 61, so as to move the arm 55 in the direction opposite to that of clockwise movement. The power of the generator is thus reduced and brought back to the fixed limit.
If, on the contrary, the power of generator 2 drops below the limit fixed in advance, the mobile coil 68 of the rheostat- i, regulator 3 moves so as to bring the mobile arm 43 to the fixed contact 66, to energize the coil 64 and thereby actuate the adjustment motor 61. The armature would turn so that it controls the clockwise movement of the arm 55. The power of the generator increases. then until it is brought back to the set limit. Changes in the value of current or voltage or both will produce the series of operations just described.
Thus it can be seen that the rheostat-regulator 3 serves to maintain the power of the generator 2 at a given constant value, whatever the load on the battery 10 or whatever the requirements of the actuating motors .1a. For example, suppose the vehicle is going up a ramp and it gets more power than the motors A and a can provide on their own to get to the top of the hill. Generator 2 will seek to deliver this additional power.
The rheostat-regulator 3 prevents this by gradually lowering the voltage of the generator 2 while maintaining its power constant, which allows the current to increase so that the battery 10 provides the necessary additional power. Suppose now that the vehicle is traveling on a horizontal road and that the power demanded by the motors A is less than the power of the generator.
The rheostat-regulator 3 then gradually increases the voltage of the generator 2 while maintaining its constant power, so that the battery 10 receives a load 4 which is equal to the difference between the power required by the vehicle propulsion engines and generator power. We can find ourselves in conditions in which the difference between the constant power of the generator and the power demanded by the A a motors is so great that the battery could suffer from too much charging speed. , for example, when the vehicle is moving by the force of inertia or traveling slowly with a light load.
A relay 9, 91, is interposed in the main pipe 4 to take this difficulty into account. 11 comprises a series coil 9 interposed in the conductor -1 between the battery and the control device 6 of the propulsion motors A a .. When the current flowing in the coil 9 reaches a given lower limit the core 9a of the coil 9 drops out and closes contacts 92, 93, bypassing part of resistor 52 in the rheostat-regulator circuit. This changes the latter's setting and lowers the generator power to a given value below the previously set limit.
At the same time as the contacts 92, 93 are closed, contacts 94, 95 are closed by a contact piece forming an extension of the core 9a of the coil 9. The closing of the contacts 94, 95 excites the coil 96 with a magnet, the armature 97 carries a toothed sector 98 which meshes with a toothed wheel integral with the butterfly 99 of the intake duct 100 of the internal combustion engine 1. When the current passes through the coil 96, the magnet is excited and attracts its frame 97, which has the effect of reducing the arrival of the explosive mixture to the cylinders of the engine, which reduces the power of the latter in a manner corresponding to the reduction in the power of the generator 2.
When the current demanded by the propulsion motors A a increases and reaches a value such that the load becomes bearable again for the battery, the coil 9 of the relay lifts its core 91, thus opening the contacts 92, 93 and 94, 95, which has the effect of returning the rheostat-regulator 3 and the throttle 99 of the internal combustion engine 1 to their normal setting.

At this moment, all the power of the generator 2 can be supplied to the battery 10. At the same time the engine throttle is partially closed. The engine and the generator will then continue to operate at reduced power, charging the battery with a speed which is not liable to deteriorate it.
When the battery is fully charged, the contact 76 of the ampere-hour counter is closed, the coil 70-72 is energized and the insulating member 30 is moved so as to break the circuit passing through the conductor 18. From this, done, the coils 19 and 20 of the switches 19a and 20a cease to be energized; they disconnect the generator from the battery and open at 22 the ignition circuit of the internal combustion engine, which causes engine 1 and generator 2 to stop.
The vehicle then continues to walk only under the action of the battery alone, until this battery has discharged to a given limit.

The latter, (in such a variant shown in fig. 4 ) comprises an armor 101 having a winding comprising a large number of , turns and contacts connected to the terminals of the generator 2 by a series resistor 52a provided with an automatic cut-off device similar to that which has been described for the construction indicated above. The magnet 102 of the rheostat-regulator carries a winding of a few turns in series with the main conduits of the generator. To the armature shaft is fixed a control arm 103 cooperating with the rheostat 57.
The control arm works between two stops 105, 106 and is provided with a spring 107 which normally maintains it on the minimum resistance button of the rheostat in opposition to the torque of the armature shaft. The operation of this device is the same as that of the rheostat-regulator and the separate rheostat described below. As the load on the generator increases, the torque of the armature shaft increases correspondingly, and moves the control arm against the spring tension, which increases the resistance of the generator, until the power supplied is reduced to the limit determined in advance.
The spring of the control arm is of such a kind that the slight movement of this arm will not appreciably increase the action of the spring, so that the torque required to move the arm will be practically the same in all. the points of the rheostat.
The ignition circuit can be supplied by a separate source and be controlled by a separate switch actuated by the core of the coil 19. Likewise, if desired, the control switch 7 can be modified so as to include means enabling the generator to be completely switched off, to allow the installation to be adapted to an ordinary electric vehicle powered by the battery alone, in the event that the internal combustion engine or the generator should be damaged. Means can also be provided for isolating the battery and the propulsion motors from the rest of the installation, to enable the vehicle to be operated only with the aid of the generator alone in the event that the battery is damaged.
