In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIG. 1, 1 shows an automo bile comprising front wheels 2 and 3, the wheel 2 being removed for the. clarity of figure. 4 is the internal combustion engine of a known type, for example a water-cooled engine such as those which are generally used on automobiles, locomotives, tractors and other vehicles. To the internal combustion engine 4 is directly coupled an electric generator 5 which generates a direct current of high voltage, preferably 220 volts; but this flight naturally varies within wide limits.
A control device 6 operated by a lever 7 is used to connect the generator to the electric motors mounted on the rear wheels 8 which they drive. The generator 5 is shown in FIGS. 10 to 14 inclusive; the preferred type of engine key is shown in fig. 15 to 22 and the control device is shown in figs. 4 to 9.
The rotor 9 (fig. 4) of the generator 5 consists of two armatures 10, 11 each of which comprises its collector and its windings, these two windings being housed in the grooves on the rotor 9 which rotates between the pole pieces 12 and 13. The collector of the armature 10 comprises the brushes 14 and 15, and the collector of the armature 11 comprises the brushes 16 and 17. The pole piece 12 carries an inductor bearing 18, and the pole piece 13 an inductor winding 19. The polar part 12 also carries an auxiliary inductor winding 20, energized by a battery 21 controlled by a suitable switch. The purpose of this winding 20 is to provide positive excitation to generator 5 at all times and to prevent accidental overturning.
The control device 6 consists of a main drum 22 and a reversing drum 23, shown schematically in plan in FIG. 9. The main drum 22 carries, isolated from it, pads 23 'to 30 inclusive; these pads are shown developed in FIG. 4. A series of contacts 32 to 39 inclusive are mounted on an insulating body 31 (fig. 9). The drum 22 can occupy four positions indicated by the lines, 40, 41, 42, 43, in fig. 4. The reversing drum 23 is provided with pads 44 to 57 inclusive, placed on two lines, 58-58 and 59-59. A series of contacts 60 to 67 inclusive rest on the surface of the drum 23 and close contact with the pads placed on line 58-58 or the pads placed on the. line 59-59.
The drum is placed in either of these positions to drive the electric motors in the forward or reverse direction.
The motor armatures are shown schematically at 68 and 69 and the inductors are shown schematically at 70 and 71. Connections 72 and 73 are also made between the contacts of the main drum 22 as well as intermediate connections 74, 75, 76, 77, 78 and 79 inclusive between the pads of the reversing drum 23.
The control device described above makes it possible to connect the armatures of the motor and the generator according to the key diagrams shown in figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 as well as to reverse ser the connections between the armatures and the inductors of the motors, by means of the reversing drum 23, so as to move the vehicle either in forward or backward. The inductor winding 19 is permanently connected in series with the inductor 10 and the inductor winding 18 is permanently connected in series with the inductor 11, the inductor windings of the generators are by continued deleted in fig. 5, 6, 7, 8.
As will be seen below, the inductor 70 is always in series with the armature 68 and the inductor 71 is always in series with the armature 69 and the inductors 70 and 71 have also been omitted on the fig. 5, 6, 7, 8.
In fig. 5, which is the neutral position, the contacts 32 to 39 rest on the part of the drum indicated by the line 40-40 and therefore there is no closed circuit between the generator 5 and the motors.
In fig. 6 which represents the first low speed position, the generator armatures 10 and 11 are connected in quantity and feed the armatures of the motors which are mounted in series. In this position, each motor receives half the voltage generated in the armatures of generators 10 and 11 and double the current generated in these armatures.
Fig. 7 corresponds to the second position, intermediate position; the armatures 10 and 11 are connected in series with the armatures of the motors 68 and 69, which receive the full vol tage of one of the armatures of the generator and all of the current generated in this armature.
In fig. 8, which is the third position or the high speed position, the armatures of the generator are connected in series and the outputs of the motors 68 and 69 are connected in quantity, each motor thus receiving double the voltage generated in one of the results of the generator, and half of the current. The electrical supply circuits in each of these positions are described below: In the first position, shown schematically in FIG. 6, the contacts 32 to 39 rest on the pads 28, 29, 30. When the vehicle has to move in the forward direction, the contacts 60 to 67 rest on the pads 44 to 49 inclusive.
In this case, the current coming from the brush 15 passes through 19 and 32; similarly, the current from the brush 17 passes through 33 to 28 and 32; the total current then passes through 32, 39, 69, 67, 49, 75, 47, 64, 71, 65, 48, 66, 37, 30, 38, 68, 63, 46, 74, 44, 60, 70, 61, 45, 62 and 73 to the contact 35, the contact 35 connected by the winding 18 to the brush 16 and by 29 and 34 to the brush 14. When the various parts occupy this position, it can be seen that the armatures 68, 69 are in series with inductors 70 and 71 and are in series with inductors 10 and 11 which are in quantities. In this position, each motor receives double the current generated in armatures 10 and 11 and half the voltage, which gives a high starting torque and allows the motor to run at low speed while the generator is running at high speed.
As soon as the vehicle is started, the drum 22 is turned to connect the contacts 32 to 39 to the pads 26 and 27. The previously existing connections are interrupted by the pads 28 and 29 and the brush 17 is connected by 33, 26 and 34 with the brush 14, thus placing the two armatures 10 and 11 in series; the connections of armatures 68 and 69 remain the same, segment 27 being only substituted for segment 30. This puts the various parts in the position shown in fig. 7, in which the inducts 10 and 11 of the generator are in series and the armatures 68 and 69 of the motors are in series. In this position, each motor receives all of the voltage generated in each lead of the generator and all of the current from each armature.
When it is desired to move at the third or high speed, the drum 22 is rotated so that the contacts 32 to 39 close the connection with the pads 23, 24 and 25; in this position, the armatures 10 and 11 of the generator are still in series, the stud 23 being substituted for the segment 26; the armatures 68 and 69, each in series with the corresponding field winding 70 or 71, are placed in quantity, one relative to the other; the current circulates through the parts 73, 62, 45, 61, 70, 60, 44, 74, 46, 63, 68, 38 and 25 and in the conductor 72 which forms the other terminal of the circuit of the motors.
When the armatures 68 and 69 are placed in quantity, with respect to the circuit which has just been described, a circuit is formed by 36, 24, 37, 66, 48, 65, 71. 64. 47, 75, 49, 67 , 69 and 72. It can be seen that in this position, each motor armature 68 and 69 receives the voltage of the two armatures 10 and 11 of the generator and half of the current supplied by each armature.
If it is desired to reverse the direction of travel of the vehicle, the drum 23 is rotated so as to close the contacts 60 to 67 on the pads 50 to 57, instead of the pads 44 to 49, as described above. Instead of connecting the contact 63 by 46, 47 and 44 with the end 60 of the inductor winding 70, the contact 63 is connected by 63, 53, 77, 51, 66 and 61 with the other end of the winding 70. The end 60 is then connected by 50, 76, 52, 62 with the external circuit. Likewise, the connection of inductor 71 to inductor 69 is reversed.
In other words, by turning the drum 23 by 180, it is possible to change the connections of the inductors 70 and 71 with the armatures 68 and 69, thus changing the direction of rotation of these armatures; The above arrangement of connected series generators and motors operating as shown allows great fuel economy and considerably simplifies the driving of the car.
The characteristic curve of a typical direct current series generator is shown by the small diagram in the upper left corner of fig. 2, where the horizontal distance represents the number of revolutions per minute of the generator and the vertical distance represents the current when the generator is connected to a given resistance. Examination of the curve X M N shows that up to a certain critical speed, the generator supplies only a very weak current; that at this speed the current rises very rapidly, then more slowly owing to the saturation of the magnetic circuit of the generator.
This diagram represents the characteristic curve of a series generator with direct current when it is connected to a constant resistance, for example to two motors in series in their rest position.
This feature is very advantageous, and it prevents the motor from supporting a large load until its speed exceeds a certain critical speed; this allows the motor to run at low speed without load. In other words, on the scale shown, the generator can reach a speed of two hundred revolutions per minute, before starting to deliver a large current in the electric motors; this prevents stalling the engine at idle since the generator does not give a considerable load until it reaches the speed of about 200 revolutions per minute.
The operation of the motor is shown schematically in fig. 2 over which the horizontal distances represent the number of revolutions per minute of the engine, the vertical distances represent the speed of the automobile in kilometers per hour and the curves AB, RS, YZ represent the acceleration of the speed of the automobile in all three connection modes.
At the start on a flat road, the engine runs empty up to point A, which is roughly the same point as point M of the generator characteristic; at this point, which is just under 200 revolutions per minute, the generator supplies sufficient current to start the automobile with the connections shown in fig. 8, that is to say the armatures of the series generator and the armatures of the electric motors in quantity. When the speed of the automobile accelerates along line A-B, that of the engine also accelerates following the same curve. This is the normal method of starting on a good road when excessive tractive effort is not required.
Let us compare with the starting method, with the mechanical transmissions currently in use, seliematically shown by the CD-Er-CH curve; on this curve, the vertical distances represent the speed of the automobile in kilo meters-hour and the horizontal distances, the number of revolutions of the engine per minute. In other words, the speeds of the engine and of the automobile starting from rest accelerate along the straight line C-D in first gear.
The speed is then changed, the speed of the motor drops at E; then the engine and automobile speeds accelerate along the E-F line; the speed is then changed, the speed of the motor drops to G, then the speeds of the motor and the automobile accelerate along the line G-H. Theoretically, the engine and the automobile should both be fired from a resting position; in fact, the speed of an internal combustion engine cannot accelerate from its rest position and it must reach a speed of 200 revolutions per minute, disengaged. The clutch is engaged and the angular momentum of the various rotating parts of the engine makes it possible to accelerate the speed of the automobile sufficiently to prevent the engine from stalling.
In fig. 2, curve 1-J represents the. horsepower of an automobile engine with the throttle fully open. The horizontal distances represent the number of revolutions per minute of the engine and the vertical distances represent the horsepower. The K-L curve indicates the moment of torque developed by the engine at various speeds when the throttle is wide open. Horizontal distances represent the number of revolutions per minute and vertical distances represent the moment. The 0-P curve indicates the fuel consumption in liters per kilometer with the throttle fully open. The horizontal distances represent the number of revolutions per minute of the generator and the vertical distances represent the consumption of gasoline.
In fig. 3, a curve has been drawn showing the efficiency of an internal combustion engine rotating at a fixed speed with a variable load. In this case, the speed is adjusted by operating the throttle. In this figure, the horizontal distances represent the load rate and the vertical distances represent, in percent, the thermal efficiency at the brake, the efficiency at full load being assumed to be 100%.
Referring to the 0-P curve, it can be seen that the smallest fuel consumption in liters per kilometer and, consequently, the greatest efficiency, is obtained at around 900 revolutions per minute for the engine considered, and, referring to the K-L curve, it can be seen that the greatest torque is obtained at 700 revolutions per minute. When starting the engine along the CD-EF-GH line, it is necessary to start with the throttle open only partially, for example at 25% of full engine load. Referring to the curve of fig. 3, we will see that the yield is then half of what it would be with the throttle completely open.
Referring to the engine operating curve of fig. 2, we note that at low speed, there is a very low torque, the K-L curve falling very quickly at low speed. It is evident that by starting so much the internal combustion engine mechanically in the ordinary manner, with the low speed or the intermediate speed, one has a low power or a weak torque for the low speeds of the engine, and a low efficiency for high speeds. By starting the engine along curve A-B, the throttle can be opened wide at 200 rpm and speed up with a throttle wide open, obtaining high efficiency and high torque.
If it is necessary to start the engine gradually or if it is necessary to start it from a sandy place, or to overcome bad road conditions, the electric motors can be placed in the second position, the generator and the motors being in series. In this way, the speed of the engine is accelerated at no load to point R, that is to say to 410 revolutions per minute, then the speeds of the engine and of the motor are accelerated according to the curve RS , in which the horizontal distances represent the speeds of the engine and the vertical distances represent the speed in kilo meters-hours of the automobile.
As soon as the engine and the automobile have reached point T, on the R - S curve, it is advantageous to return them to the first position and allow acceleration of the speed of the engine and the following automobile. line UB, In the case of very bad conditions, the motors can be connected according to the first position with the generator in quantity and the motors in series.
The engine speed is accelerated at no load to point y at a speed of 640 revolutions per minute; then the engine and automobile speeds accelerate along the Y-Z line, in which the horizontal distances represent the engine speeds and the vertical distances represent the number of kilometers per hour of the automobile; as soon as the number of engine revolutions exceeds 1000 per minute, it is advantageous to return the connections to the second position by then accelerating the speed of the motor along the VT line and finally bring it back to the third position by accelerating the speed of the motor. motor following the UB line.
By referring to the 0-P gasoline consumption curve, we will see that between 600 and 1200 revolutions per minute, we have the greatest efficiency for the engine, and by referring to the curve KL, we will see that the engine develops its greatest torque at around 700 rpm, so that by increasing the engine speed along the YW, VT and U - B lines, the engine will always be in its proper position. area of greatest efficiency and maximum torque. By constantly operating in this way, it is possible to considerably reduce the power and consequently the weight of the motor mounted on the vehicle, which compensates for the weight of the generator and the electric motors.
It has been found that the characteristics of the combination of the series generator and series motors, described above, are quite suitable for the characteristics of an internal combustion engine, and by properly proportioning the generator and motors, one can avoid tampering with the control device, except at rare intervals; the control device is placed in its third position and the speed of the automobile started, slowed down or accelerated by moving only the throttle.
In practice, the first and second position of said positive device for a tourist automobile is therefore rarely used and, in certain cases, the first position of said device can be completely eliminated by using only the second and third positions of said device.
The generator, shown in fig. 10 to 14 inclusive, has certain advantages in its inductor structure, its ventilation system and its form of winding. In the embodiment shown, there is a box 80 comprising end closure cones 81, 82; bearing holders 83 are fixed to the closing cones by means of bolts 85; these bearing carriers carry bearings 86 and 87 which support a shaft 88. The bearings 86 and 87 shown are of the ball type, but can be of any suitable type, lubricated with lubricant tubes 89.
An armature 90 disposed on the shaft 88, is formed by flanges 91 and 92 joined together by bolts 93 and keyed on the shaft 88; toothed rings 94 are placed between the parts 91, 92 and the notches of these rings receive the windings 95 of the armature; the flanges 91 and 92 also carry the collectors 96 on which brushes 97 rub. One of the collectors 96 is connected to the armature 10, mentioned above, and the other collector is connected to the other armature 11. The brushes 97 have previously been individually numbered 14, 15, 16 and 17, depending on their position.
Openings are made in the inlet 90 and the air circulates in these openings in the direction of the arrows. The inductor consists of a toothed ring 98 mounted on the box 80; this ring carries a shunt inductor winding 99, a series 100 inductor winding and 101 compensator windings.
In fig. 11, these windings are shown partly in section, a part being deleted to better represent the construction of the generator. These windings produce an inductor pole whose center is placed along the line 102-102; the intensity of the magnetic flux of this pole depends on the intensity of the current and the number of turns of the shunt and series 99 and 100 coils. At the same time, a compensating pole is produced by the compensating winding, the center of this pole being placed on line 103-103.
In the armature of this generator, a form of coils shown in FIGS. 12, 13, 14 on which 105 represents the mass of the armature provided with grooves 106; in these grooves 106, the straight bands 107, 108 of the reels are housed, these bands are connected by end bands 109 and 110 of the shape shown.
The curved part of each strip 110 is extended at two ends 111 and 112, at the front end of the coil, so as to connect it directly to the collector 113; the coils for one of the armatures 101 are placed in one direction and the coils, for the other armature 11, are placed in the other direction, with respect to the terminals 111 and 112. By making the ends 111 and 112 come out of the curved parts of the bands 110 of the coils, it is possible to quickly make the connections to the collector and to have a construction which takes up very little space. In addition, in this arrangement, potential differences in the coils are avoided.
Figs. 15 to 22 show a driving wheel for small loads and high speeds and figs. 23 to 26 represent a driving wheel for heavy loads and low speeds. In the form of a wheel shown in FIGS. 15 to 22, there is an armature formed by a ring gear 114, the grooves of which contain the coils 115; the crown 114 carries an internal recess for placing the mass of the inductor 116, excited by the field coils 117 and 118. The masses of the armature 114 are arranged in a main box 119, provided with a hub 120 and of rais 121; hub 120 fits over the shell of a bearing 122 which is supported by roller bearings 123 and 124.
The internal rolling cages of roller bearings 123 and 124 are fixed to a sleeve of the inductor 126, which is fixed to a hollow shaft 127 by means of a nut 128. The hub 120 is fixed to the casing of the inductor. bearing 122 by means of the cap 127Ú which closes the openings between the spokes 121. An internally conical ring 128 is mounted on the main box 119 in which ring are fixed the contact pieces 129 of the manifold; these Contact pieces leave a vacuum internally and are insulated by mica and held in place by a collector ring 131. Contact pieces 129 are connected to coils 115 by conductors 132. On the armature is mounted a pneumatic tire. 134 of the ordinary form.
It is possible to remove the tire 134 and the armature assembly without modifying the rest of the device as shown in FIG. 17. When it is desired to remove the armature, a sleeve 135 is fixed inside the casing of the bearing 122, as shown in FIG. 17; the sleeve has a slightly smaller internal diameter than the sleeve 122; the armature can then be removed with the collector 129, as shown in FIG. 17, without danger of dropping the wheel and damaging any part.
The inductor carries brushes 136 mounted on isolated pivots 137 in the disc 138 of the inductor; disk 138 is. preferably, integral with the sleeve 126 and carries teeth 116, as well as the insulated pivots 139 provided with housings in which the rods 140 penetrate. The rods 140 are housed in a circle, as shown fi-. 16, and are carried with suitable isolation on an elastic support 141 to which the axis 1-27 is rigidly fixed. To partially support the load, a plate 141Ú is fixed by means of bolts 142 to the box 119; this plate carries the brake drum 143 and is supported by a roller bearing 144 which rotates on a hub 145 on the part 127.
While disassembling the armature, as shown in fig. 17, the bolts 142 and the plate 141Ú are removed and the connection parts can remain on the inductor. Felt linings 146, 147, 148 serve to prevent dust and grease from entering the engine.
If it is desired to remove the entire wheel from the axle 127, a wheel extractor 149 shown in FIG. 18. In this case, the cap 127Ú and the bolt 128 are removed, and a threaded ring 150 of the wheel extractor 149 is screwed onto the end of the means 122, which carries a nut 151 to prevent the separation of the wheels. various parts. By turning a set screw 152, the sleeve 126 can be removed by driving the brake drum 143, the plate 141Ú and the inductor and armature assembly. The rods 140 are withdrawn from the housings of the pivots 139. These rods conduct current to the inductor coils 118 and 117, and through the brushes 136 and the conductors 132, to the coils 115. In this example, the shaft therefore carries fixed contacts. and the inductor holder sleeve of the movable contacts which cooperate when the inductor is in place.
The motor is wound, like generators, or ordinary motors, with direct current.
Due to the particular position of the coils it is necessary to use a particular form of coil shown in figs. 20, 21 and 22, on which 153 and 154 are the sides of a coil connected by end connecting parts 155 and 156. 157 and 158 are the sailing conductors, and the coils are placed in the grooves of the induced, as shown in FIG. 21. In this figure, it will be remembered that the armature has an internal opening and that the slots in the crown 114 are directed inward. It will be seen that the conductors 157 arrive at the upper end of the grooves 159 and that the conductors 158 are at the lower ends of the grooves 159. The fully assembled coils have the appearance shown in FIG. 22.
When it is desired to transport extremely heavy loads, for example, omni buses, wagons, etc., the type of construction shown in figs. 23 to 26. In this form of construction, a forged shaft 160 is used, provided with a cavity 161, formed between the two parts 162 and 163; the axis extends to form a cylindrical 164 bearing on which is mounted the hub 165 of a wheel 166. The wheel 166 carries a tire 167 which is directly mounted on it and a tire 168 which is mounted on an extension 169 fixed on the wheel 166 by means of bolts 170.
The outer end of the extension 169 is fully closed by a metal plate 170Ú; the inner end of the wheel 166 is closed by a plate 171 which forms a tight seal at 172 with the axle 160; an internal grained 173 is placed on the wheel 166, this gear being engaged with intermediate gears 174. The gears 174 are mounted on shafts 175 which are carried on extensions 176 of the axle 160. A pinion 177 meshes with the grained 174 and is carried on a hollow shaft 178 which rotates inside the extension 164. This part is provided with an extension 179 which carries the crown 180 and the winding 181.
The extension 179 also carries supports 182 on which brushes 183 are mounted; the brushes 183 are in contact with the contact parts of the reader neck 184 which is carried by the extension 169 from which it is isolated.
The coils 185 are connected to the contact pieces of the collector 184, and are mounted in a toothed part 186; the brushes 183 and the coils 181 are connected by conductors 187 with contact rings 188 carried on an insulating part 189 mounted on the shaft 178. Brushes 190, mounted on insulated carriers 191, are in contact with the rings 183: the brush holders 190 are mounted on the sides of the parts 162 and 163. The rings 188 are continuous and form a permanent connection between the external circuits which are connected to the brush holders 191 and the coils.
The mode of operation of this modification is as follows: The current is supplied to the coils 181 to 185 and it produces a mutual attraction and repulsion between them, as in a direct current motor, and the ring gear 180 tends to rotate inside the ring gear 186. The rotation of the ring 180 is transmitted by the hub 178 and the gear 177, and from the gear 177 by the gear 174 to the internal gear 173.
The crown 180 rotates in the direction of the needles of a center, as shown in FIG. 24. and produces a rotation of the bands 167 and 168 in the opposite direction and with a speed which is considerably less than that of the crown 180 the ratio between the speed of the crown 180 and the speed of the wheel depending on the speed. port of the diameters of the gears 177 and 173) which in the drawing is 4 to 1. With such a mechanism. when the crown 180 rotates at 1000 revolutions per minute, the wheel only makes 250 revolutions per minute and in a direction opposite to that of the crown 180. It is thus possible to have a high speed for the crown 180. while the wheel rotates at low speed, allowing a light motor mechanism to be used.
