Les fig. 1 et 1a montrent une élévation de côté, partie en coupe, de l'appareil com plet, l'extrémité par où a lieu l'alimentation se trouvant du côté droit; Les fig. 2 et 2 , sont un plan de l'appareil représenté sur la fig. 1; La fig. 3 est une coupe transversale sui vant la ligne U-V de la fig. 1; La fig. 4 est une vue, partie en coupe transversale, suivant la ligne TV X de la fi-. 1;
La fig. 5 est une coupe transversale sui vant la ligne Y-Z de la fi-. 1; La fig. 6 représente schématiquement un dispositif pour guider les rubans et les main tenir tendus transversalement; La fig. 7 représente un détail de la fig. 6 à une échelle plus grande; La fig. 8 représente une autre forme d'exé cution d'un dispositif de circulation; Les fig. 9 à 11 représentent respectivement en élévation de côté (partie en coupe), en plan et en vue, partie en coupe, suivant la ligne X-X de la fig. 9, une deuxième forme d'exécution de l'appareil;
Apparatus for treating textile fibers before carding and spinning. Apparatus presently employed generally for dyeing cotton and other fibrous textile materials with liquids in the free state in the form of a web coming from the threshing machine or the opener, that is to say before to start carding and spinning operations, have a tank where the free fibers are stirred using rotating arms or other similar devices so that the liquor reaches all parts of the mass, or the said devices have a receptacle Any suitable method in which the fibers are compressed and the bundle is pushed back through the compressed mass. In these devices the fibers are considerably deteriorated.
In addition, it is difficult to guarantee that one cuvée will have the same shade as another cuvée, and what is even more important, it is im possible, with the means currently available, to dye in a satisfactory manner. making fibers with oxidation, nitrogen or basic colors.
The disadvantage of the deterioration of the fibers mentioned above is also encountered in the usual devices currently employed for bleaching or other treatment of fibers - in the free state as has been said above.
This invention relates to an apparatus for treating fibers before carding and spinning, making it possible to avoid the disadvantages indicated above; this apparatus can be used for dyeing, bleaching or other similar treatment if desired, without damaging said fibers. It comprises tanks, one or more rotating perforated cylinders located in these tanks, two large co-operating endless ribbons intended to receive between them and to transport the material through to the tanks and around the perforated cylinder (s), means for maintaining the carrier formed by the ribbons in close contact with the outer surface of each cylinder and means for closing the perforations of each cylinder which at any given time are not closed by contact with the carrier.
With this apparatus successive liquor treatments can be carried out, as well as any desired treatment in air, for example for oxidation by dyeing, while the material passes through the apparatus.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention. In these devices, the material can be treated at will with any colors: sulfur, oxidation, azo, basic etc., just as the dyeing process can be carried out in a continuous operation, the oxidation born. necessary as well as the necessary washing.

Fig. 12 shows automatic means for supplying dyeing material in calculated amounts to a dye bath.
The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 to 7 is arranged to dye cotton fibers in the free state, in the form of an opener web, without subsequent treatment except washing, and it has a cylinder 22 (fig. 1, 2 and 3) arranged transversely in a tank A filled with dye liquor prepared in an appropriate manner. The cylinder is perforated and two tapes 1 and 3 passable by liquids and described more specifically below, form a conveyor which encloses the fibers to be dyed and is held tightly against the periphery of the cylinder by the pressure rollers 23 .
A plate 24 is disposed longitudinally of the cylinder 22 above the part which is not covered by the conveyor in its path around the cylinder 221, so as to leave a space for the conveyor between the edges of this plate and the sides. two highest pressure rollers. The plate 24 is not perforated so that the dye liquor cannot pass through said plate. The interior of the cylinder 22 communicates by a pipe 25 with a rotary suction pump 26 (fig. 3), actuated by the set of belt pulleys 27.
With the pump turned on and the conveyor passing around cylinder 22, the dye liquor is sucked through the material into the interior of the cylinder through the perforations and is fed to the pump through pipe 25 back to the cylinder. pipe 28 to the dye tank 1. After having passed around the cylinder 22, the conveyor with the material it contains, passes to a second cylinder 29 provided with pressure rollers, a pump and a similar mechanism to those of cylinder 22 and indicated by the same reference letters with the addition of the index a, 26a representing a pressure pump.
The treatment of the material as it passes over the cylinder 29 is carried out by the pressure of the liquor (drawn from the tank) through the perforations and the material, and back to the tank t1. The treatment of the material in both directions is thus achieved ensuring complete and uniform dyeing. From cylinder 29, the conveyor passes between two rollers 17-17 with the help of which all the excess dye liquor is squeezed out, this excess falling back into tank A. From rollers 17-17, the conveyor can pass into tank 13 and between the flat upper part of a closed chamber 30 and pressure rollers 31 which will be described in detail later.
The conveyor then passes between the rollers of another pair of rollers 1711, then into a tank C. The cylinders 22 and 29 are actuated by means of a chain drive as shown in the drawings. They are mounted in bearings provided in the tank A. so that the tincture liquor can freely enter and exit them. These bearings are well known and any known suitable shape can be employed.
In tank C, fig. 1, 2 and 5, there are two closed chambers 32, 33, each provided with a perforated flat upper part and guide rollers 34 arranged so that the conveyor, which passes around them, must pass horizontally in crossing the chamber above and in close contact with the flat topsides. As shown in fig. 1, guide plates 36 are provided between the guide rollers. This tank is the washing tank; it is filled with water which can be acidified in any customary manner.
The washing operation will be better understood by referring to fig.'5 together with the main figure 1. In this figure; 35 designates a rotary pump which, through pipe 37, sucks the washing water from the tank C through the conveyor and the material passing over the perforated upper part of the chamber 33, and then brings said water from washing through the pipe 38 inside the chamber 32 and discharges it through the perforations through the part of the conveyor and the material passing along the upper part of the chamber 32. The washing water is thus passed through through all parts of the tinted material in two different directions by suction and pressure.
Instead of the pump arrangement shown in fig. 5, one can use that of FIG. 8. In this variant the washing water passes from the pump 35 into the chamber .33 in the direction of the arrow, the two-way valve 35b being or green for the pump and the chamber 33. and closed to the flow line 35a, the circulation being from the chamber 32 to the pump 35, from the pump inside the chamber 33, from there, through the material to the tank C. Thus the water of washing is successively sucked through the material and discharged through the latter.
When desired, valve 35b can be operated to establish communication between pump 35 and line 35a and water will then be drawn through material passing over chamber 32 into the pump and thence into the pump. flow line. Regardless of the role first described, the pipe 35 'of FIG. 8 - establishes communication between chamber 32 and an air pump (not shown) which can be installed to remove air from chamber 32 if necessary in any operation. The conveyor then passes around the guide rollers 39 to arrive at the rollers 5 and 6 which express the excess washing water, this water falling back into the tank C.
So that the guide rollers 39 cannot slip, some of them can be controlled with the aid of a chain 39a passing around chain wheels fixed on these guide rollers and actuated by a wedged toothed wheel. on the roller 6.
The upper tape 1 is mesh and metallic and passes from the exit roll 5 in the direction shown by the arrows to the entry roll 2. The lower tape, similar, 3 passes from the exit roll 6 to the entrance roll 4 located below the input roller 2. Thus the two endless belts 1 and 3 converge. Guides and support rollers 7 are provided for the lower tape. A roller 8 of which the bearing 81 can move freely in a vertical slot 9 provided in the frame 10 serves to tension the upper tape 1. To adjust the height of the bearing 8a, the threaded rod 8b is used. For tape 3, two analogous tension devices 11 are used.
In its path outside the device, the upper tape l rests on the rollers 5, 17a, 17 and 2.
12 denotes a table on which the endless trellis feeder is placed, 13; this table is provided with high sides 14 (fig. 2) comprising vertical or green bearings arranged to receive the ends or journals 15 of rods of tablecloths, each of these rods carrying a roll of tablecloth 16, as it comes from the mixer .
A single roll 16 is shown in the drawing, but there are several parallel rolls arranged along the feeder. To bring the material of the webs into the dyeing apparatus, the end of each web is unwound and placed on the material of the web behind it, which material passes underneath carried by the mesh 13.
The bands 1 and 3 being started and drawn by the rollers 2 and 4, 5 and 6 and the pairs of rollers 17 and 171, actuated by the shaft 18 by means of the angle wheels and the pinions 19, 20 thus as friction plates 21, these ribbons move in the direction indicated by the arrows and enter the device as was said above in contact with the rollers 2, 4. The levers 21el pivoting at 211, and each carrying a against weight 21 keep the rollers 21'1 pressed against friction plates 21, the purpose of which will be indicated below.
The material of the webs, superimposed as mentioned above, is brought between the rollers 2, 4 and thus penetrates between the tapes 1, 3, the latter pulling the material in the apparatus between them until they separate cry leaving the interior. To remove material from their surface at their point of divergence, rotating brushes 40 are arranged near rollers 5 and 6 and actuated in any suitable manner. They preferably consist of wooden rollers provided with stiff leather squeegees 40 @ which are attached to the rollers.
However, the brushes can be any other suitable shape, for example, they can be mounted radially or otherwise in wooden rollers. 41 re presents a pipe in which the material falls as it is removed from the conveyor by the brushes; the material is sucked into this duct by a fan 42 by means of which it can be propelled into the drying chamber by any suitable duct.
In dyeing by oxidation colors, for example indigo blue, where the color is developed and fixed on the material by the latter's exposure to the atmosphere after the dyeing operation, vat A and parts y housed can be the same as described above. However, vessel B would be arranged exactly like vessel C, i.e. with chambers 32 and 33, guides and guide rollers, and would be kept empty of liquor. After the passage of the compression rollers 17 the conveyor and the material would pass around the guide rollers and above the chambers of the tank B equivalent to the chambers 32 and 33 shown in the tank C of the sins, these chambers communicating with a pump rotary air.
The same procedure described above with regard to the washing would be followed with the difference that for the treatment air would be used. The long transverse displacement given to the conveyor by the arrangement of the guide pulleys would, in this case, be favorable to the oxidation process, since the material, even when it is not treated by the air pump, is exposed to the air for a considerable period of time before entering wash tank C. It will be appreciated that this long transverse displacement is also advantageous in the washing process in tank C.
To use the device in the dye with. Azo colors or other "development" colors, or in any other operation where a short period of treatment with a liquor is necessary after that given by the passage of the material around the cylinders 22 and 29, the operation of nitrogenization or development can be carried out in tank B.
In this tank B, as shown in the drawing, 20 (fig. 1 and 6) designates a closed chamber comprising a flat perforated upper part 301, and divided by a partition 30s, pressure rollers 31 being arranged, as well as we see it, to keep the carrier in close contact with this part. When using this chamber 30, the conveyor passes compression rollers 17 over part 301, of the chamber, the vessel B being filled with liquor.
A pump 43 (fig. 1, 2 and 4) actuated by a set of belt pulleys 44. communicates through pipe 45 with one side of closed chamber 30, and through pipe 46 with the other side. Pump 43 draws liquor from tank B, through the material and into one side of the closed chamber. 30 by the perforations provided in the chamber portion 30, this liquor being delivered by the pump into the other side of the chamber and through the material to return to the tank; the treatment is therefore similar to that received by the material when it passes around the cylinders 22 and 29.
It is necessary that the tapes 1 and 3 be kept under constant tension; we must therefore ensure that at any time too much pressure is not exerted on these carriers. For this purpose, provision is made for the friction drive which has already been mentioned and shown at 21 between the shaft 18 and the angle pinion 19, FIG. 1 and 2. Anything which may tend to slow down the rollers 2 and 4, 5 and 6, 17 and 171, will therefore not tend to tear the conveyors, the friction plate 21 allowing the necessary sliding, to so that the control is thus equalized.
U-section guide rails are provided throughout the interior of the tanks so that the conveyor follows a straight path through them, the edges of the ribbons, reinforced if necessary, engaging in the guide rails. Or else, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 where the carrier is shown in section passing over part 30a of chamber 30 in tank B, the longitudinal edges of tapes 1 and 3 are provided with ropes or cables 44a. Pairs of half-pulleys 45a and 46a with adjacent chamfered internal edges,
are mounted in such a way that they can be rotated on supports, as is clearly shown in fig. 7, the edge of a tape 1 or 3 passing between the half-pulleys of a pair and the cord 441, engaging in the groove formed by the juxtaposition of the chamfered edges. Any desired number of these pairs of pulleys can be provided for each longitudinal edge of each of the tapes 1 and 3, thus keeping them transversely in tension as they pass through the apparatus.
Figs. 9, 10 and 11 show a variant of the cylinders 22 and 29 and the means for closing their perforations which are not closed at any time by the conveyor 1, 3 when it passes around said cylinders; these figures also represent a variant of the arrangement of the cylinders. In these figures, 22 is a rotary cylinder mounted in hollow bearings in tank A. which may be a preparatory tank filled with washing water.
This cylinder is provided with perforations as has been said above, but as shown in Figs. 9 and 11, it can rotate around a semi-cylindrical internal support. This support comprises a central tube 47 and a semi-cylindrical casing 48, the tube and the casing being assembled by spokes 49. Short radial projections 50 are provided on the lower part of the central tube 47; they are linked by fastening tabs 51 serving as reinforcement at the ends 52 of the casing 48.
Openings 53 clearly represented in FIG. 11, are provided in the wall of the lower section of the central tube to allow liquor to pass inside and out of cylinder 22.
The outer face of the semi-cylindrical casing 48 is formed with an annular flange or stopper 54 (Fig. 11). In order to adjust the cylinder 22 so that it is in a correct position with respect to the casing 48, the latter is machined so that said cylinder fits all around without leaving any spaces or interstices between the two on faces. For assembly, the cylinder 22 is slid on the casing 48 until its end comes to rest against the flange 54.
A separate collar 55 is then placed on the casing 48 and slid against the end of cylinder 22 in a position which allows the edge of cylinder 22 to have sliding contact with flange or stop 54 and face. internal collar 55, the latter then being secured to the casing 48 of any suitable tisanière, for example using bolts or adjustment screws. The ends 52 of the semi-cylinder support are folded inwards so as to constitute a complete bearing surface for the ends of the cylinder 22, and the part of the latter which slides on these folded edges is not perforated.
In tank B of fig. 9 and 10 show three cylinders 22. So that the conveyor can pass around them while still covering all the perforations which are not closed by the semi-cylindrical casing 48, the central cylinder 22 and its support are reversed. and slightly raised above the plane of the other two. The pipe establishing the communication between the central pump 26 and the central cylinder 22 of the tank B is curved at 26b to allow all the pumps of the series to be in a single plane and to be actuated by the shaft 56 at the means of claws as seen in 57.
The cylinders 22 of this variant are not positively actuated, but they rotate by their frictional contact with the conveyor when the latter passes around them. It will be noted that in this variant, the conveyor does not require guide rollers. In this example, the control means for each pair of rollers 2, 4 and 17 are different from those shown in the previous figures to allow said rollers to slide if a great thickness of material is present at their points of contact. at any time in the conveyor (in fig. 11 only part of the components of which the control is composed is shown).
In these figures, 58 denotes an endless screw actuated from the end of the apparatus by a gear of the usual type by means of a pulley, conventional belt or otherwise; 59 is a helical helical wheel meshing with the worm. The helical wheel is mounted on the shaft 60 of the lower roller of a pair of rollers so as to rotate freely. With this helical wheel 59 is connected the friction plate 61 (fig. 10) in contact (the friction with another friction plate 62.
The latter is wedged on the shaft 60, and on this shaft is also wedged the right toothed wheel 63 which meshes with another similar toothed wheel 64 provided on the shaft 65 of the upper roller. A spring 66 and a handwheel 67 are used to adjust the pressure between the contiguous faces of the discs 61 and 62. As the helical wheel 59 rotates, the friction plate 61, connected to the latter, also rotates thereby actuating the shaft 60 via the friction plate 63.
This movement is communicated to the upper roller by the toothed wheels 63 and 64 of the same diameter. If too much material is presented at the contact points of the rolls, slippage occurs between the control plate and the controlled plate 61 and 62, which prevents tearing of the tapes 1 and 3. As is evident. , the pump and roller controls shown in fig. 1 to 5 can be replaced by the control of figs. 9, 10 and 11.
One can provide titi automatic dye supply device (Fig. 12) combined with the apparatus. In this figure, 68 denotes a dye mixing tank filled with dye liquor 69 at any suitable height.
Buckets 70, attached to a chain 71 immersed in the liquid and moving around chain wheels 72 attached to rollers 73, the upper roller of which is actuated at a predetermined speed in any suitable manner by the main motor shaft of the treatment apparatus, bring the dye liquor to the top of the tank, and passing around the upper chain wheel, - 72, they empty their contents into a funnel. 74, this content arriving through the pipe 75 to the dye tank which, by way of example, can be the tank A.
Stopping the main control of the device will therefore stop the supply of the dye liquor; further, having determined the amount of liquor required for any particular weight of material passing through the apparatus, the liquor feed rate can be calculated exactly and the feeder adjusted to the required speed. A tank 68 can supply a single tank or several process tanks with the necessary piping and shut-off valves, as is easily understood.
Modifications to the apparatus may be made with respect to the number of tanks, the number of cylinders and the number of perforated flat top casings, depending on the particular treatment to which the material is to be subjected.
