Abstract
A method and a shelter arrangement for temporary covering of an open deck space (1) on a watercraft. Said open deck space (1) is provided with a shelter arrangement comprising a flexible protective covering (5), which is tightened in a first direction by means of a plurality of supports (4), which may be gathered side by side for storing and moved in a second direction, principally perpendicular with respect to the supports (4), to be placed at a distance from one another for setting up the shelter arrangement in order to cover said open deck space (1). The ends of the supports (4) are provided with a guiding arm (10), which determines the mutual distance between the supports (4), when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position, and pushes the supports (4) located ahead of it into the collapsed position of the shelter arrangement, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together.
Description
METHOD AND SHELTER ARRANGEMENT FOR TEMPORARY COVERING OF
AN OPEN DECK SPACE ON A WATERCRAFT
The invention relates to a method and a shelter arrangement for temporary covering of an open deck space on a watercraft.
It is known to locate swimming pool compartments, sundecks and spa areas especially on the upper decks of cruisers. There is a need to provide reasonable conditions for passengers in this kind of spaces irrespective of the possibly changing weather conditions. This can be accomplished by using temporary movable shelters. To this end, it is previously known to use movable glass shelters, the support structures of which are made of steel or aluminium. The prior art structures are, however, quite heavy, which raises the centre of gravity and thus impairs the ship's stability. Moreover, these kinds of structures, when packed together, take a lot of space and require heavy transport mechanisms and locking devices. Consequently, it is even fairly complicated to take them into use.
The document JP 08-040352 shows a shelter arrangement. This arrangement is complicated in construction and awkward to use since it is spread up by means of cords and each of the supporting portals is separately fixed directly to the deck by a number of binding means.
A purpose of the invention is to provide a new kind of solution for temporary covering of the open space on a watercraft minimising the problems related to prior art. In particular, a purpose of the invention is to provide a solution based on a movable shelter arrangement, which on one hand is lightweight and space-saving, when packed together, as well as simple, fast and dependable to move. Further, a purpose of the invention is to provide a solution, which enables the setting up of the

The invention relates to a method and a shelter arrangement for temporary covering of an open deck space on a watercraft.
It is known to locate swimming pool compartments, sundecks and spa areas especially on the upper decks of cruisers. There is a need to provide reasonable conditions for passengers in this kind of spaces irrespective of the possibly changing weather conditions. This can be accomplished by using temporary movable shelters. To this end, it is previously known to use movable glass shelters, the support structures of which are made of steel or aluminium. The prior art structures are, however, quite heavy, which raises the centre of gravity and thus impairs the ship's stability. Moreover, these kinds of structures, when packed together, take a lot of space and require heavy transport mechanisms and locking devices. Consequently, it is even fairly complicated to take them into use.
The document JP 08-040352 shows a shelter arrangement. This arrangement is complicated in construction and awkward to use since it is spread up by means of cords and each of the supporting portals is separately fixed directly to the deck by a number of binding means.
A purpose of the invention is to provide a new kind of solution for temporary covering of the open space on a watercraft minimising the problems related to prior art. In particular, a purpose of the invention is to provide a solution based on a movable shelter arrangement, which on one hand is lightweight and space-saving, when packed together, as well as simple, fast and dependable to move. Further, a purpose of the invention is to provide a solution, which enables the setting up of the
2 shelter in a simple manner so as to cover the open deck space also only partially, when desired, and by means of which the protective cover can easily be kept tightly spread out independent on whether or not the protective cover is entirely or only partially spread out.
According to the invention said open deck space is provided with a shelter arrangement comprising a flexible protective covering, which is tightened in a first direction by means of a plurality of supports, which may be gathered side by side for storing, and moved in a second direction, principally perpendicular with respect to the supports, to be placed at a distance from one another for setting up the shelter arrangement in order to cover said open deck space. The protective covering suitable for the purpose may be quite lightweight, whereby the supports required for the tightening and expansion thereof to the outspread position may also be reasonably lightweight and space-saving. The protective covering may be made of plastic or other similar material, and it may preferably be also translucent.
The opposite sides of said open deck space are provided with rail-shaped guide elements for guiding the supports, while the shelter arrangement is being spread out and packed together.
The ends of the supports are provided with a guiding arm, which determines the mutual distance between the supports, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position. This provides for simple tightening of the particular part of the shelter arrangement, which at that time is spread out, whereby it looks stylish, does not bang in the wind and does not collect water pockets in case of rain.
Further, said guiding arm is utilised for pushing the supports located ahead of it, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together.
According to the invention said open deck space is provided with a shelter arrangement comprising a flexible protective covering, which is tightened in a first direction by means of a plurality of supports, which may be gathered side by side for storing, and moved in a second direction, principally perpendicular with respect to the supports, to be placed at a distance from one another for setting up the shelter arrangement in order to cover said open deck space. The protective covering suitable for the purpose may be quite lightweight, whereby the supports required for the tightening and expansion thereof to the outspread position may also be reasonably lightweight and space-saving. The protective covering may be made of plastic or other similar material, and it may preferably be also translucent.
The opposite sides of said open deck space are provided with rail-shaped guide elements for guiding the supports, while the shelter arrangement is being spread out and packed together.
The ends of the supports are provided with a guiding arm, which determines the mutual distance between the supports, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position. This provides for simple tightening of the particular part of the shelter arrangement, which at that time is spread out, whereby it looks stylish, does not bang in the wind and does not collect water pockets in case of rain.
Further, said guiding arm is utilised for pushing the supports located ahead of it, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together.
3 PCT/F12006/050268 A functionally advantageous solution is provided, when the outermost part of the shelter arrangement in the spreading direction thereof is provided with a guiding arrangement, for instance with two supports, which are fixedly connected to one another at a distance from each other. In this way, the setting up of the shelter arrangement onto a desired place of said guide elements in said second direction, and the packing together of the arrangement for the storage space may be carried out in a simple and controlled manner.
The ends of the supports are preferably provided with a supporting arm getting its guidance from the guide element in order to keep the support in a vertical position. Thus, the supports stay in a vertical position independently.
The protective covering may preferably be divided into sections, which are supported irrespective of one another by adjacent supports. Thus, each section may be replaced, when required, independently of the others.
A storage space may be arranged at the end of said open deck space, into which storage space the shelter arrangement may easily be moved in its collapsed position, when not needed.
Further, a service trailer unit movable in said second direction may be arranged above the shelter arrangement for the maintenance thereof.
In the following, the invention is explained by way of example with reference to the appended schematic drawings, in which - Figure 1 depicts a side view, and partially a sectional view, of the shelter arrangement according to the invention in a collapsed position for the storage space;
The ends of the supports are preferably provided with a supporting arm getting its guidance from the guide element in order to keep the support in a vertical position. Thus, the supports stay in a vertical position independently.
The protective covering may preferably be divided into sections, which are supported irrespective of one another by adjacent supports. Thus, each section may be replaced, when required, independently of the others.
A storage space may be arranged at the end of said open deck space, into which storage space the shelter arrangement may easily be moved in its collapsed position, when not needed.
Further, a service trailer unit movable in said second direction may be arranged above the shelter arrangement for the maintenance thereof.
In the following, the invention is explained by way of example with reference to the appended schematic drawings, in which - Figure 1 depicts a side view, and partially a sectional view, of the shelter arrangement according to the invention in a collapsed position for the storage space;

In the drawings the reference number 1 refers to an open deck space on a watercraft, being for instance a swimming pool compartment or a sundeck.
Along the sides of the deck space there are support structures 2, on which rail-shaped guide elements 3 are arranged. These elements support a number of movable supports 4, which again support a flexible protective covering 5 so that it is tightened parallel with the supports. At the end of the deck space 1 there is a storage space 6, into which the protective covering 5 and the supports 4 are gathered up in the way shown in Fig. 1, when the deck space is to be kept open.
Similarly, when the deck space is to be partially or totally covered, the protective covering 5 and the supports 4 are spread out as shown in Fig. 2.

In the drawings the reference number 1 refers to an open deck space on a watercraft, being for instance a swimming pool compartment or a sundeck.
Along the sides of the deck space there are support structures 2, on which rail-shaped guide elements 3 are arranged. These elements support a number of movable supports 4, which again support a flexible protective covering 5 so that it is tightened parallel with the supports. At the end of the deck space 1 there is a storage space 6, into which the protective covering 5 and the supports 4 are gathered up in the way shown in Fig. 1, when the deck space is to be kept open.
Similarly, when the deck space is to be partially or totally covered, the protective covering 5 and the supports 4 are spread out as shown in Fig. 2.
5 The more detailed structure of the shelter arrangement appears from Figs. 3 -8.
The supports 4 comprise an arch-like section 4a with primarily vertical sections 4b at the ends thereof. The support 4 comprises a support element 4c extending over its whole length, to which element the protective covering 5 is fastened.
The structure makes it possible to divide the protective covering into sections, which irrespective of one another are fastened to the support element 4c for instance by bolts, whereby the sections of the protective covering may be replaced individually, when required. The vertical sections 4b are provided with rollers 7, which are in cooperation with the rail-shaped guide element 3. In addition, the section 4b of the support is provided with an obliquely placed supporting arm 8 for keeping the support 4 independently in a vertical position.
Also the end of the supporting arm 8 is provided with a guide roller 9, which is supported by the guide element 3.
Figs. 5 - 7 illustrate how the support element 4c of the support 4 extends over the entire length of the support and makes thus also a part of the vertical section 4b of the support. Both ends of the support element 4c are provided with a turnably supported guiding arm 10, one end of which is provided with a guide roller 11. The guiding arms 10 determine the mutual distance between the supports 4, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position, and at the same time keep the protective covering 5 tightened. Moreover, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together for the storage space 6, the guiding arms 10 push the supports located ahead of it. The storage space 6 comprises a guiding member 6a for arranging the guiding arms 10 into their collapsed position shown in Fig. 2.
The supports 4 comprise an arch-like section 4a with primarily vertical sections 4b at the ends thereof. The support 4 comprises a support element 4c extending over its whole length, to which element the protective covering 5 is fastened.
The structure makes it possible to divide the protective covering into sections, which irrespective of one another are fastened to the support element 4c for instance by bolts, whereby the sections of the protective covering may be replaced individually, when required. The vertical sections 4b are provided with rollers 7, which are in cooperation with the rail-shaped guide element 3. In addition, the section 4b of the support is provided with an obliquely placed supporting arm 8 for keeping the support 4 independently in a vertical position.
Also the end of the supporting arm 8 is provided with a guide roller 9, which is supported by the guide element 3.
Figs. 5 - 7 illustrate how the support element 4c of the support 4 extends over the entire length of the support and makes thus also a part of the vertical section 4b of the support. Both ends of the support element 4c are provided with a turnably supported guiding arm 10, one end of which is provided with a guide roller 11. The guiding arms 10 determine the mutual distance between the supports 4, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position, and at the same time keep the protective covering 5 tightened. Moreover, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together for the storage space 6, the guiding arms 10 push the supports located ahead of it. The storage space 6 comprises a guiding member 6a for arranging the guiding arms 10 into their collapsed position shown in Fig. 2.
6 In the spreading direction of the shelter arrangement the outermost part comprises two support elements 4, which are fixedly connected to one another at a distance from each other. Thus, the shelter arrangement may be easily and controllably set up onto a desired point of the guide elements 3 and similarly be packed together for the storage space.
Figs. 9 - 11 show the arrangement of a separate service trailer unit 12 on top of the shelter arrangement. For the service trailer unit the support structures 2 are provided with separate guiding members 13. In this manner, it is easy to maintain the shelter arrangement and monitor its condition, whereby e.g. one section of the protective covering may be replaced, as explained in the foregoing.
The invention is not limited to the shown embodiments, but several variations are conceivable within the scope of the appended claims.
Figs. 9 - 11 show the arrangement of a separate service trailer unit 12 on top of the shelter arrangement. For the service trailer unit the support structures 2 are provided with separate guiding members 13. In this manner, it is easy to maintain the shelter arrangement and monitor its condition, whereby e.g. one section of the protective covering may be replaced, as explained in the foregoing.
The invention is not limited to the shown embodiments, but several variations are conceivable within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims (14)
1. A method of temporary covering of an open deck space on a watercraft, according to which said open deck space is provided with a shelter arrangement comprising a flexible protective covering, which is tightened in a first direction by means of a plurality of supports, which are moved from a first position, in which they are gathered side by side for storing, into a second position in a second direction, principally perpendicular with respect to the supports, to be placed at a distance from one another for setting up the shelter arrangement in order to cover said open deck space, and in which the opposite sides of said open deck space are provided with rail-shaped guide elements guiding the supports while the shelter arrangement is being spread out and packed together, wherein the method includes providing the ends of the supports with a guiding arm, which determines the mutual distance between the supports, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position, and pushes the supports located ahead of it, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together.
2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the spreading direction of the shelter arrangement the outermost part is provided with a guiding arrangement, for instance with two support elements, which are fixedly connected to one another at a distance from each other.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the ends of the supports are provided with a supporting arm, which gets its guidance from the guide element, for keeping the support in a vertical position.
4. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the protective covering is divided into sections, which are supported irrespective of one another by adjacent supports.
5. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein a storage space is arranged at the end of said open deck space, into which storage space the shelter arrangement is moved in its collapsed position.
6. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein a service trailer unit movable in said second direction is arranged above the shelter arrangement.
7. A shelter arrangement for temporary covering of an open deck space on a watercraft, said shelter arrangement comprising a flexible protective covering, which is tightened in a first direction by means of a plurality of supports, which may be gathered side by side for storing and moved in a second direction, principally perpendicular with respect to the supports, to be placed at a distance from one another for setting up the shelter arrangement in order to cover said open deck space, and in which the opposite sides of said open deck space are provided with rail-shaped guide elements for guiding the supports, while the shelter arrangement is being spread out and packed together, wherein the ends of the supports are provided with a guiding arm, which determines the mutual distance between the supports, when the shelter arrangement is in its outspread position, and pushes the supports located ahead of it into the collapsed position of the shelter arrangement, when the shelter arrangement is being packed together.
8. The shelter arrangement according to claim 7, wherein in the spreading direction of the shelter arrangement the outermost part is provided with a guiding arrangement, for instance with two support elements, which are fixedly connected to one another at a distance from each other.
9. The shelter arrangement according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the support comprises an arch-like section and a primarily vertical section at its both ends, and that the ends of the support are provided with guide rollers or the like, which are adapted to cooperate with said rail-shaped guide elements.
10. The shelter arrangement according to any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein said guiding arm is turnably supported by the ends of the supports.
11. The shelter arrangement according to any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein the ends of the supports are provided with a supporting arm, which gets its guidance from the guide element, for keeping the support in a vertical position.
12. The shelter arrangement according to any one of claims 7 to 11, wherein the protective covering is divided into sections, which are supported irrespective of one another by adjacent supports.
13. The shelter arrangement according to any one of claims 7 to 12, wherein a storage space is arranged at the end of said open deck space, into which storage space the shelter arrangement is moved in its collapsed position.
14. The shelter arrangement according to any one of claims 7 to 13, wherein a service trailer unit movable in said second direction is arranged above the shelter arrangement.
