Description
.. `
Display Device for Displaying Received Information and for Transmitting Received Digital Data to External Mobile Apparatuses and Corresponding Request Method Technical Field This invention relates to a display device for display of information and a corresponding order method. In particular, this invention relates to a display device for receiving and displaying digital data as well as a corresponding order method.
Background Various electronic and electromechanical display devices are used nowadays for advertising or information purposes, which typically obtain the information to be displayed from a memory or have it supplied by a programmed device via an interface. As a rule, these display devices serve merely the unidirectional broadcasting of visual data, which cannot be further used in electronic form and/or in an automatic way, however, by the user.
Devices with a radio or television receiver for receiving program-accompanying digital data and a display for showing received program-accompanying digital data are known and are available on the market. In particular, such devices are available for digital DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio systems or for other radio systems such as FM-SWIFT or FM-DARC, or for television receivers with teletext which typically all operate unidirectionally. Although information can be received and displayed with such devices, a user cannot receive information in a targeted way only on themes selected by him.
Described in the European patent application EP 259 717 is a method in which program-accompanying data are provided with content-specific codes and are transmitted, for advertising purposes. A user can receive information on one or more topics in a targeted way, for example real estate advertisements, by programming a portable receiver with the corresponding codes. Mentioned as a transmission medium, besides radio waves, are electromagnetic waves, infrared rays as well as ultrasound, especially for short distances.
Described in the patent application JP08234709 is a data display method in which advertising data are transmitted to a data receiver via a satellite. The advertising data are stored on a hard disk and are shown on a monitor. Nation-wide advertising data are transmitted from the data receiver, for example via ISDN
or PSTN networks, to advertising data servers, where they are displayed on a screen.
The method aims above all at universal broadcasting of advertising data, but offers a mobile user no possibility, however, of further using the advertising data in electronic 1a form and/or in an automatic way.
Described in the patent application WO 94/13107 is a set top terminal for cable television systems via which set top terminal a television set can be connected to the cable television network. The set top terminal according to WO 94/13107 can be operated by the user by means of a remote control via an infrared interface.
Besides special services, such as, for example, generating picture-in-picture signals for television sets that do not have such services, the set top terminal according to WO 94/13107 makes it possible for a user to display program and transmission lists on the television set, store user preference values in the set top terminal, and carry out interactive services over the cable television network by means of the menus displayed on the television set, for example on-line surveys or orders or airplane tickets, data being transmitted upstream by the set top terminal to an operations center via the cable television network.
Described in the patent application EP 0 713 335 is a system in which data are captured wirelessly in a mobile device from a television screen, and transactions are initiated based on the captured data by means of the mobile device, the data being transmitted, for example, through the mobile device via a mobile radio network to a service center. In the system according to EP 0 713 335, the data are shown on the screen in a way non-perceptible to the user, for example as an indiscernible visual pattern, and are captured by the mobile device by means of an optical lens and a photo detector.
Described in the patent application WO 94/15417 is a mobile data capture device integrated into an infrared remote control, which device monitors and records, for marketing purposes, use of a television set by a user. By means of a built-in bar code reader, bar codes of products acquired through purchase can also be recorded with the data capture device according to WO 94/15417.
Described in the patent application DE 44 24 380 is a method in which program wishes of interested users relating to encrypted television programs are transmitted by means of a mobile device via a mobile radio network to an administrative installation of the respective program provider, after which the administrative installation transmits corresponding decryption information to a decryption device associated with the respective television set, so that the user can see the respective television program in non-encrypted form.
Summary of the Invention It is the object of this invention to propose a new display device for the display of information and a corresponding order method.

Summary of the Invention It is the object of this invention to propose a new display device for the display of information and a corresponding order method.
This object is attained according to the invention through the elements of the characterizing part of the independent claims. Further preferred embodiments follow moreover from the dependent claims and from the specification.
This object is achieved in particular in that the display panel of the display device is dimensioned such that information received by a data receiving module and displayed on the display device, for example program-accompanying digital data received by a radio or television receiver of the display device, or digital data received by a mobile radio module or communications module via a mobile radio network, or respectively a fixed network, or digital data read by a reader of a data io carrier, can still be read by users at a distance of several meters, for example two, three or more meters, and in that the display device comprises at least one contactless interface via which at least certain of the received digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, can be transmitted to external, portable, personal mobile devices, not connected to the display device.
is Depending upon the embodiment variant, such a display device has various advantages, for example information, for example for advertising purposes, can be further transmitted to users by means of a radio or television receiver for receiving program-accompanying digital data, without these users themselves having to be equipped with a respective data receiving module for receiving such 20 program-accompanying digital data.
The display device preferably comprises filter means in order to receive only that digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, which are addressed to it. This has the advantage that, for example, a plurality of such display devices can be supplied specifically with various information from the 25 same radio or television program. This itself can be achieved, consequently, if the radio or television receiver is implemented in the display device in a simplified way for only one channel.
Depending upon the variant, the said contactless interface of the display device comprises at least one coil and/or infrared transmitter, by means of which 30 the received digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, can be transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves, or respectively infrared rays, to portable, personal mobile devices, for example mobile radio telephones. This has the advantage that the digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, received by the display device, can be transmitted to users not just visually, 35 but instead the data can also be transmitted to their mobile devices, where the data can be further processed, for example.
In respective variants, the contactiess interface of the display device can also receive data from mobile devices, and to be more precise, via the said coil and/or an infrared receiver. Moreover, in a variant, such data received by the display device via the contactiess interface, for example over mobile radio networks or fixed networks, can be transmitted to a service center.
In different variants, the display panel and the data receiving module are integrated into a common housing, or they are integrated into different housings and are connected to each other via an interface.
In a further variant, the display device also comprises a loudspeaker and io an amplifier in order to reproduce acoustically audio programs, or respectively audio data, received by said data receiving module. This has the advantage that, in addition to the visual data, also acoustical information, having a relationship to the visual data, for example, can be further transmitted to users.
In the order method according to the invention, an order is initiated by the user through actuation of certain operating elements of the said mobile device, in which order data, based on certain digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, received by the display device and transmitted to the mobile device via the contactiess interface, are transmitted to a service center by means of short messages over a mobile radio network. The short messages are, for 2o example, SMS short messages, USSD data or similar datagrams, which are transmitted to the service center via a GSM or a UMTS network, for example.
The advantage consists in that the received digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, can be further used by the mobile device directly and in an automatic way, and in that, for example, the unidirectional transmission of the program-accompanying digital data can be extended to bidirectional communication.
The received digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, connected with the order method, preferably comprise an identification of the service center as well as a product or service identification. These identifications make possible the execution of an order, for example according to the method for mobile radio telephones to order products or information, which method was described in the patent application PCT/CH96/00464 (WO 98/28900).
In a variant, the user can enter selection commands by means of operating elements of the mobile device, and transmit them via the contactless interface to the display device, where the digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, are thereby selected that will be transmitted from the display AMENDED PAGE
In a variant, the user can enter selection commands by means of operating elements of the mobile device, and transmit them via the contactless interface to the display device, where the digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, are thereby selected that will be transmitted from the display AMENDED PAGE
device to the mobile device. The advantage consists in that the user can determine directly the data which he would like to have transmitted.
In different variants, the contactiess interface is achieved in the mobile device in such a way that an infrared transmitter and receiver is integrated into the housing of the mobile device or a coil is implemented in the mobile device or in a chipcard, for example an SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, removably connected to the mobile device.
In a variant, certain of the digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, transmitted to the mobile device, are filtered in the mobile device on the basis of user profiles, which are stored, for example, on a chipcard.
This has the advantage that data in which the user is interested can be automatically transmitted to his mobile device and received there, for example for further processing.
In a variant, the digital data, for example of the program-accompanying type, transmitted to the said mobile device and received by the mobile device, can be displayed on the display unit of the mobile device and, by means of operating elements of the mobile device, browsed through by the user, selected, and further processed, for example in the chipcard through predefined software functions.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a display device (1) comprising a display panel (12), on which information can be displayed, as well as a data receiving module (13, 13') for receiving digital data, displayable on said display panel (12), said display panel (12) being dimensioned such that information received by the data receiving module (13, 13') and displayed on the display panel (12) can still be read by users from a distance of several meters, wherein the display device (1) further comprises at least one contactless interface via which at least certain of the said digital data received are transmittable in the transmitting range of the display device (1) to one or more external, portable, personal mobile devices (3), not connected to the display device (1), and wherein the display device (1) comprises a processing module (17) which processing module (17) is set up in such a way that it transmits periodically, via the contactiess interface, at least certain of the said digital data received, and/or which processing module (17) is set up in such a way that it receives selection commands, transmitted via the contactless interface by the mobile devices (3), and transmits, via the contactiess interface, certain of the said digital data received, based on the received selection commands.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an ordering method, in which digital data are received by a display device (1) with a data receiving module (13, 13'), at least certain of the said digital data received 4a being displayed on a display panel (12) of said display device (1), which display panel (12) is dimensioned such that information received from the data receiving module (13, 13') and displayed on the display panel (12) can still be read by users from a distance of several meters, wherein at least certain of the said digital data received are transmitted by said display device (1) in the transmitting range of the display device (1) via a contactiess interface to one or more external mobile device (3) not connected to said display device, by means of a processing module (17) of the display device (1) at least certain of the said digital data received being transmitted periodically via the contactless interface, and/or by means of this processing module (17) selection commands from mobile devices (3) being received, which are sent by these mobile devices (3) via the contactiess interface, and by means of this processing module (17) certain of the said digital data received being transmitted via the contactless interface, based on the received selection commands, and wherein a user initiates an order through actuation of certain operating elements (34) of one of said mobile device (3), in order to transmit data by means of short messages from this one of said mobile devices (3) over a mobile radio network (4) to a service center (41) on the basis of certain of said digital data received.

- transmission of television programs with program-accompanying data, for example teletext information, by a television transmitter 2, which can be received by a corresponding television receiver 13, 13', and can be shown, for example, on a television screen 12, for example a conventional electronic television picture tube or an LCD or plasma display.
- transmission of short messages, for example SMS short messages or USSD data, or broadcast messages over a mobile radio network 5, for example a GSM or UMTS network, by a corresponding transmitter 51, for example a communications server of a service center 51, and 5 reception of these data through a corresponding mobile radio module 13.
- communication of digital data from a transmitter 51, for example a communications server of a service center 51, over a fixed network 5, for example the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or the Internet, to a corresponding communications module 13.
- reading of digital data by a reader 13, 13' of a data carrier (not shown), for example a chipcard, a CD-ROM or a floppy disk.
In the detailed embodiment example, the reference numeral 2 refers to the above-mentioned radio transmitter, for example a transmitter of a nationwide or local radio station or a transmitter to cover a narrowly limited geographic area, for example premises of a trade fair or exhibition. The radio transmitter is, for example, an FM transmitter, which can also transmit in particular program-accompanying digital data. The transmission of program-accompanying data in addition to the radio program is used above all in the digital radio system DAB
(Digital Audio Broadcasting) or in other radio systems such as FM-SWIFT or FM-DARC. The DAB technology, for example, makes it possible to transmit both radio programs as well as program-accompanying services (Program Associated Data, PAD). For example, by means of DAB data, it is possible to transmit in eight addressable channels with a capacity of 150 Kbits each, the addressing of these channels making it possible to transmit data to a separately addressed receiver, to a defined group of several receivers (multicast) or to all receivers (broadcast).
As indicated by the two unidirectional arrows going out from the radio transmitter 2, the program-accompanying digital data, for example advertising information on products and/or services, are broadcast by the transmitter, together with any possible audio programs, and are received by a corresponding radio receiver 13, 13', which can receive these program-accompanying digital data and can decode them with suitable functions, i.e. the radio receiver 13, 13' is, for example, a DAB radio receiver 13, 13' or a radio receiver 13, 13' for receiving program-accompanying data according to FM-SWIFT, FM-DARC or according to another process. Depending upon the embodiment, the radio receiver 13, 13' also has the possibility to recognize the above-mentioned addresses of the various data channels, and, corresponding to these addresses, receive or ignore the data contained therein.
Such a radio receiver 13, 13' is a component of the display device 1 according to the invention. Depending upon the embodiment variant, the radio receiver 13 is integrated into the same housing 11 as the display panel 12, or the radio receiver 13' and the display panel 12 are integrated into separate housings and are connected via an interface 14, indicated schematically by the broken line 14. If applicable, the interface 14 can be achieved through means known to one io skilled in the art, for example as a serial or parallel interface, by means of a fixed or removable cable connection, or via a contactless interface.
In one possible embodiment, a possibly transmitted and received audio signal is passed on by the radio receiver 13, 13' via a schematically indicated internal connection to an amplifier 19, for example an audio amplifier known to one skilled in the art, is amplified by this amplifier, and the amplified electrical signal is delivered to one or more loudspeakers 20. As shown in the figure, both the amplifier 19 and the loudspeaker 20 can be integrated into the housing 11, or the amplifier 19 and/or loudspeaker 20 can be connected to the radio receiver 13, 13' via an external, fixed or removable cable connection (not shown).
The radio receiver 13, 13' passes on the received program-accompanying digital data to a processing module 17 via a connection, also indicated schematically. If the function of decoding the above-mentioned cable addresses is not assumed by the radio receiver 13, 13', the processing module 17, for example, is responsible for recognizing the various data channels and, corresponding to these addresses, receiving or ignoring the data contained therein.
The received program-accompanying digital data are temporarily stored by the processing module 17, and are conducted to the display panel 12 for display via the schematically shown internal connection. The display panel 12 can be, for 3o example, an electronic, electromechanical or other display unit known to one skilled in the art. Depending upon the embodiment, the display control, i.e.
the control of how the data are supposed to be shown on the display panel 12, can be assumed by a correspondingly programmed software function of the processing module 17 or through respective functionality of the display panel 12. For example, the same information, e.g. an advertisement for one or more products and/or services of a particular supplier, can be shown statically on the display panel over a longer period of time, or various information, for example advertisements of different suppliers or a plurality of products and/or services from the same supplier, can be displayed in an alternating or intermittent fashion in line-wise or page-wise scrolling. The processing module 17 comprises, for example, a processor and memory means, the memory means serving not only temporary storage of received, program-accompanying data, but also storage of programmed processing, communications and control functions. The processing module 17 can be designed and achieved by one skilled in the art using, for example, commercially available components.
At least certain of the received, program-accompanying digital data are also passed on by the processing module 17 via a schematically shown internal connection to an electronic module 18. This electronic module 18 comprises an electronic circuit, which can be designed and achieved by one skilled in the art in such a way that it receives the data from the processing module 17 via the internal connection and transmits them as a corresponding analog or digital signal to a contactiess interface for transmission via this interface. The contactless interface comprises, for example, a coil 15, by means of which the data are transmitted as electromagnetic waves, for example with a frequency of 13.56 MHz or at another frequency, and/or an infrared transmitter 16, from which the data are transmitted as infrared rays. In the reverse direction, the circuit developed by one skilled in the art can receive the signals induced in the electric coil by an external magnetic field, by a mobile device 3, and/or receive, via the infrared receiver 16, the infrared rays emitted by an external mobile device 3, and pass them on to the processing module 17 as data, via the schematically shown internal connection.
Depending upon the variant, the electronic module 18 can contain, for example, only one circuit for a coil or for an infrared transmitter/receiver, or it can comprise two different circuits, one for the coil and one for the infrared transmitter/receiver, or it can contain a common combined circuit. The circuits can be implemented, for example, as integrated circuits in the electronic module 18. Known circuits for inductive contactiess interfaces are already being used in chipcards, inter alia, and are known by the designation CCI (Contactless Chipcard Interface). The contactless infrared communication is preferably based on a known standard, for example on the IrDA (Infrared Data Association) protocol.
The commercially available infrared transmitter/receiver 16 is either integrated directly into the housing 11 or is placed on the surface of the housing 11. In a variant, one skilled in the art can also decide to combine the processing module 17 with the electronic module 18.
Brief Description of the Drawings An embodiment of the present invention will be described in the following of the basis of an example, which is illustrated in the attached figure, in which:
Figure 1 shows a schematic block diagram comprising a data transmitter, a display device, a mobile radio telephone with chipcard as well as a mobile radio network and a service center connected thereto.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments The following example relates to a radio transmitter 2, as data transmitter 2, and correspondingly to a radio receiver 13, 13' for receiving program-accompanying data from radio programs transmitted by this radio transmitter 2. At the same time, however, by way of introduction, it should be said that the invention can also be applied to other combinations:
As illustrated in the figure, the display device 1 can communicate via the contactless interface with an external, portable and personal mobile device 3.
The mobile device 3 is, for example, a mobile radio telephone 3; it can also be another personal, portable device, however, designed and built by one skilled in the art especially for the purpose of communicating with the display device 1 according to the invention. The mobile device 3 comprises a contactless interface, as described, for example, in the patent application PCT/CH97/00237 (WO 98/58509) in the name of the present applicant, which comprises, for example, an infrared transmitter/receiver 31, which is integrated into the housing io of the mobile device 3, or a coil 32, which is integrated into the mobile device 3, or the mobile device 3 comprises a chipcard 35, as described in the patent application PCT/CH98/00036 (WO 98/58510) in the name of the present applicant, which is removably connected to the mobile device 3 and comprises a coil, or the mobile device 3 is removably connected to an extension module (not shown), as described in the patent application PCT/CH98/00211 (WO 99/60713) in the name of the present applicant, which comprises a coil and/or an infrared transmitter/receiver.
The maximal communication distance between the display device 1 and the external mobile device 3, with direct communication via the contactless interface without, for example, using the radio telephone components of the mobile radio telephone 3, depends, for example, upon the features of the coils 15, 32, 36, which can be made by winding a wire, for example, or by any other suitable technique, and upon the transmitting power, which is typically limited on the side of the mobile device 3 such that its energy reserves are not burdened too much.
A range of several meters, for example, can be achieved without any difficulty by means of conventional techniques. It is important to see to it that the housing 11 is not electromagnetically shielded at that site where the coil 15 is situated so that a radio connection with the external mobile device 3 can be established. Also in the supplementary or alternative embodiment variants with an infrared transmitter/
3o receiver 16, the maximal communication distance depends upon the transmitting power, which, again, is limited on the side of the mobile device 3 such that its energy reserves are not overly burdened. The range can easily amount to some meters in an embodiment with known techniques and components. However, with the infrared communication, the communication path between the infrared transmitter/ receiver of the display device 1 and the mobile device 3 must be free of impediments which cannot be passed through by the infrared rays. It should also be mentioned here that the communication distance, with direct communica-tion via the contactless interface, can also very well depend on the direction of AMENDED PAGE

It should also be mentioned here that the communication distance, with direct communica-tion via the contactless interface, can also very well depend on the direction of AMENDED PAGE
communication, so that the display device 1 emits signals with a greater power than the mobile device 3, and consequently can communicate data to be transmitted over a greater distance to external mobile devices 3 than is the case vice-versa. This can very well be useful, depending upon the application and communications protocol.
In a variant, the processing module 17 is programmed in such a way that it transmits the temporarily stored program-accompanying digital data periodically, as described above, via the contactiess interface, for example, as previously mentioned, with a transmitting power which is greater than that of the mobile to devices 3. The data thus transmitted are received by mobile devices 3 in the transmitting range of the display device 1. In a variant, the data are filtered on the basis of user profiles, stored, for example, on a chipcard 35 removably connected to the mobile device 3, in that content-specific codes of the program-accompanying data received by the mobile device 3 are compared with corresponding codes in the user profiles, for example through correspondingly programmed software functions on the chipcard 35, for example an SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module). In this way received by the mobile device 3 are only those data in which the user is interested, according to his user profile, or respectively those data for which he has registered or for which he has paid, 2o depending upon the application. For example, a user can have a user profile loaded onto his chipcard 35, which profile contains codes for a particular group of products and/or services, or he can pay for a user profile, which enables him to receive via his mobile device 3 certain information and data that have to be paid for.
In an alternative or supplementary variant, the processing module 17 is programmed in such a way that it transmits certain temporarily stored program-accompanying digital data on targeted inquiries from a mobile device 3, whereby, depending upon the application, the data thus transmitted can and may be received in each case by all mobile devices 3 in the transmitting range of the 3o display device 1, or whereby the data thus transmitted contain, for example, an identification on the basis of which the respective mobile device 3 recognizes that data are involved which it has requested. If it is necessary for the application, the data can also be transmitted encrypted, for example with the TTP (Trusted Third Party) method or a PTP (Point-To-Point) method. A DEA, DES, TDES, RSA or ECC security algorithm can also be used, however, for the encryption of the data exchange via the contactiess interface between the display device 1 and an external mobile device 3. If it is also necessary for the application, for identification and authentication of the user of the mobile device 3, an IMSI
(International Mobile Subscriber Identification) or an IDUI (International Debit User Identification), stored on the chipcard 35, can also be used, which are transmitted, for example, via the contactless interface to the display device 1, the 5 above-mentioned TTP method or a similar method being used for the authentication.
The targeted request for data by the user takes place, for example, in such a way that the user sees information in which he is interested, for example an advertisement with a plurality of options, displayed on the display panel 12 of the io display device 1. Involved thereby can be products and/or services being offered for sale, which are provided with an identification number, for example. It is also possible, however, that instructions for requesting the displayed information are given via the loudspeaker 20 of the display device 1. The user of the mobile device 3 requests the information by entering, for example, the identification number by means of the operating elements 34 of the mobile device 3, or by following the instructions given, corresponding selection commands being transmitted via the contactiess interface of the mobile device 3 to the display device 1. It can be necessary thereby for this process to be initiated and concluded through predefined keys of the mobile device 3, for example, which start and end a program, responsible for the request of data, on the chipcard 35 of the mobile device 3. As described above, the selection commands are received in the display device I via the contactless interface, and passed on to the processing module 17, where they are received and processed by programmed communications functions. That means that the requested information, for example the respective program-accompanying digital data, e.g. information on a particular product or a particular service, are transmitted, as described above, by the display device 1 and sent to the mobile device or devices 3. Corresponding software programs can be developed by one skilled in the art for the processing module 17 and for the chipcard 35, for example an SIM chipcard.
Preferably at least certain of the program-accompanying digital data contain a product or service identification as well as, for example, an identification of the service center 41, via which orders for these products and/or services can be carried out. It is also possible that the radio transmitter 2 operates as the service center which can accept orders for information, for example, and that program-accompanying digital data relating thereto identify the radio transmitter 2 as the service center. On the basis of such program-accompanying digital data (with product and/or service identifications), received by the mobile device 3 via the contactless interface, as described, from the display device 1, the user of the mobile device 3 can initiate an order for the said products or services. For corresponding data, requested and received from the display device 1 by means of selection commands, the order can be initiated in such a way that a predefined key of the operating elements 32 of the mobile device 3 is pressed. If corresponding data have been received by the mobile device 3 for a plurality of products and/or services, these data can be shown on the display unit 33 of the mobile device 3, can be browsed through and selected, by means of use of the operating elements, and the order for a selected product or a selected service can io be initiated again, for example, with the above-mentioned function key. One skilled in the art will understand that, for selected data, other predefined software functions on the chipcard can also be started and executed, instead of an order.
After initiation of an order, the said product or service identifications are transmitted by means of a short message, for example an SMS short message, USSD data or a similar datagram, via a mobile radio network 4, for example a GSM or UMTS network, to the identified service center 41 (or 2). To prevent entry of an order by mistake, additional confirmation steps can of course be included, which should not be gone into more closely here. The receiving of the program-accompanying digital data via the contactless interface as well as the course of the order initiation and order execution can be carried out, for example, through correspondingly programmed software functions on the chipcard 35 which are developed by one skilled in the art. The transmission and processing of the data in short messages to and in the service center 41 takes place, for example, according to the SICAP method, which is described, inter alia, in EP 689 368, according to a similar method, or based on WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).
A method which can be used here, for example, of ordering products or information for a mobile radio telephone 3 is described in the patent application in the name of the present applicant PCT/CH96/00464 (WO 98/28900).
As already mentioned, the display device 1 according to the invention is suitable, for example, for display and further transmission of advertising information on products and/or services, which can be transmitted by means of program-accompanying digital data by a radio transmitter 2, and the corresponding order method is suitable for the ordering of these products and/or services from a service center 41 (or 2) by means of a mobile device 3. The 3s concrete possibilities of use are almost unlimited, and include, for example, display devices on trade fair and exhibition premises, in amusement parks and AMENDED PAGE
shopping centers, in airports and railway stations, at financial centers and stock market exchanges, or in other localities frequented by a large public.
Not only the possibilities of use, but also generally the possibilities for application of the invention described are nearly as limitless, and are not at all restricted to the given examples of advertising for, and ordering of, products and services. In particular, for information services or admission rights to locally limited services, it is possible, for example, to extend the mere ordering to payment and delivery as well. For example, advertising can be carried out on the display device 1 for an event, for example a sports event or a tourist attraction, 1o such a boat trip on a lake or a ride on a mountain railway, and the user can place a respective order for one or more admission tickets, in short messages via a mobile radio network 4, based on the program-accompanying digital data received via the display device 1, which he can have paid for at the same time by means of a prepaid monetary amount stored on the chipcard 35. As a service in return, an admission key for one or more persons is transmitted to him, for example via the mobile radio network 4, and is stored on the chipcard 35. Then when attending the event, the admission key is transmitted via the contactiess interface of the mobile device 3 to an external installation (not shown), in this case an admission control point, and he is granted admission.
It should be mentioned again here that, thanks to the addressing and filter possibilities for program-accompanying digital data in various channels, it is possible with a radio transmitter 2 on a transmitting frequency to supply various display devices 1 with various information; several display devices 1 at different locations, for example, can thereby be supplied with information in a well-aimed and individual way.
In a variant, the display device 1 also comprises a transmitting module, indicated schematically in the figure as a component of the data receiving module 13, for transmission of data via a fixed network 5, for example the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or the Internet, or via a mobile radio telephone 5, for 3o example a GSM or UMTS network, to a service center 51. Via this transmitting module 13, for example, data, received as described above via the contactiess interface, passed on to the processing module 17, and received therefrom by means of correspondingly programmed communications functions, and further transmitted to the transmitting module 13, can be transmitted to an external service center 51 for further processing there and/or storage.
As already mentioned, the data receiving module 13, 13' of the display device 1 according to the invention can be achieved not only by means of a radio receiver 13, 13' for receiving program-accompanying digital data, but the data receiving module 13, 13' can also be a television receiver 13, 13' for receiving program-accompanying data, a mobile radio module 13 for receiving and for transmitting digital data via a mobile radio network 5, a communications module 13 for receiving and for transmitting digital data via a fixed network 5, or a reader 13, 13' for reading digital data from a data carrier. Although not all combination possibilities are explicitly shown in the figure, it can be understood by one skilled io in the art that combining some of these variants can be useful for certain applications; for example it can be useful, as already mentioned above, to combine a transmitting module 13 for transmission of data via a fixed network 5 or a mobile radio network 5 to a service center 51 with a particular data receiving module. Moreover one skilled in the art can also assume that the different 1s embodiment variants of the data receiving module 13, 13', as already described for the radio receiver, are integrated into the same housing 11 as the display panel 12, or that these data receiving modules and the display panel 12 are integrated into separate housings and are connected via an interface 14, schematically indicated by the broken line 14.
20 Furthermore, with the various data receiving modules 13, 13', it can also be useful to apply possible audio signals thereof to one or more loudspeakers 20 via the schematically indicated internal connection, via the amplifier 19, described above. One skilled in the art will know, however, that either the data receiving module 13, 13', or the processing module 17, or the amplifier 19, if applicable, 25 depending upon the embodiment of the data receiving module 13, 13', must be provided with corresponding components and/or programmed functions in order to convert digital audio data into an analog audio signal, for example, or in order to separate the program-accompanying data, the visual signal and the audio signal in the television receiver 13, 13', for example.
30 It will also be understandable to one skilled in the art that, depending upon the embodiment of the data receiving module 13, 13', the processing module 17 and the internal connection, indicated schematically in the figure, between the data receiving module 13, 13' and the processing module 17 have to be designed and achieved correspondingly differently.
35 In addition to installation and sale of display devices 1, it is possible for chipcards 35, for example SIM cards, to be loaded with the necessary functionality to carry out the order method according to the invention and with user profiles selected by the user, in exchange for payment. It is also possible, for example, to lease display devices 1 to sellers of services and/or products and/or to charge a commission for each product or service ordered this way.
