Abstract

ABSTRACT

In kitchen chopping boards, a flat surface is provided for the chopping of foodstuffs. In this invention rectan-gular openings are provided near one end and along one side of the board, into which collecting dishes are placed.
A scooped-out area adjacent to one side of each opening is provided to allow easy removal from and replacement to the board. The dishes can be used for the collection of chopped foodstuffs and of refuse from this process, allowing the work surface of the board to be kept clear at all times.

Description

SPECIFICATION

This invention relates to a kitchen utensil used for chopping foodstuffs and for collecting the chopped foodstuffs in a gathering dish.
It i8 common to find kitchen chopping boards where one first chops foodstuffs on their surface. Then one transfers these chopped foodstuffs to a cooking pot or mixing bowl by means of one of basically two methods. One either picks them up with one's fingers and transfers them directly to the pot or one holds the board directly over the pot or bowl, sweeping the chopped foodstuffs into the pot or bowl with one's hand. These boards are unsatisfactory for the transfer Or chopped foodstuffs inasmuch as the transfer is cumbersome and i9 usually not accomplished without some spillage of the chopped foodstuffs.
In one embodiment Or this invention the above mentioned disadvantages may be overcome by providing a gathering dish which recesses into a rectangular opening near one of the board such that the top surface of the rim of the dish is rlush with the top surface of the board. Such a dish allows 2~ one to sweep chopped foodstuffs into the gathering dish thus freeing the board for the chopping of other foodstuffs.
Or ir one is preparinlg foodstuffs of several different types, one may empty the gathering dish into cooking pots mi~ing bowls or other gathering dishes until all the foodstuffs re~uired ror a recipe are prepared. A fresh gathering dish is then returned to the board and the preparation of foodstuffs continues.

~?

In another embodiment of this invention the board is as in the above para~raph but with the addition of another rectangular opening along the side of the board into which a gathering dish is placed to collect refuse from the food preparation process. In this way both chopped foodstuffs and refuse can be swept into their respective dishes allowing the surface of the board ~o be kept clear at all times.
In drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is ~ top perspective view showing the chopping board without the gathering dish, Figure 2 is a top perspective view showing the chopping ;

Figure 8 is a top perspective view of the chopping board without the gathering dishes, and Figure 9 is an enlarged top perspective view showing the refuse gathering dish.

The kitchen chopping board illustrated consists of a chopping board 19 as in Figure 1 and a gathering dish 16 as in Figure 6. The board 19 and dish 16 used together are shown in Figure 2. To use the board 19 one may place it on a work-surface with either side up, both the upper board surface 17 and lower board surface 18 being similar.
~ ooking at the board 19 as in Figure 1 we see a flat chopping surface 1 and near one end of the board 19 a rectan-gular opening 2. One then places a gathering dish 16 (Figure 6) in the rectangular opening 2 of the board 19 90 that the board 19 and dish 16 fit together as in Figure2.
One may then chop foodstuffs on the flat chopping surface 1 of the board 19 and sweep these into the gathering dish 16 wi-th one's hand. This i6 possible since the upper surface 20 of the gathering dish rim 11 is flush with the flat ohopping surface 1 of the board 19. The gathering dish 16 is made to seat securely in the rectangular opening 2 of the board 19 by such means as I shall now describe. Where the walls 14 surrounding the rectangular opening 2 meet the upper ~ 17 or the lower surface 18 of the board they do so at a recessed juncture 9 which surrounds the board opening 2 as shown in Figure 7. This juncture 9 is similar for the upper 17 and lower 18 surfaces of the board 19. This recessed juncture 9 provides a seat for the bottom 6 o~ the gathering dish rim 11, the rim being shown in Figures 4 & 5.
A scooped-out area 8 beginning from its outer edge 15 continues downwards and inwards terminating where it opens into the nearest wall 14 of the rectangular opening 2 as in Figure 1.
When the gathering dish 16 is in place in the board 19 as in Figure 2, the scooped-out area 8 allows one to insert one's fingers under the rim 11 of the gathering dish 16 and easily remove it from the board 19, the rim 11 of the dish 16 being wide enough to be easily grasped by one's fingers.
From the foregoing it is believed that one can readily appreciate the improvements residing in the particular . .
preferred embodiments described, but it should be under- . -stood that various changes and modifications may be made .
without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended :~
claims.
