Abstract

There is described a cap for closing by screwing-on a container, the neck of which is provided with a tearable lid, which cap is provided inwardly with a helical blade which as the cap is being screwed down on the container neck, enters said lid and cuts away part thereof, whereby said blade has a so-called "back" end, when considering the blade rotation direction, which is curved inwards relative to the helical blade, to raise the lid.
Fig. 1.

Description

This invention relates to a cap for closing a container by screwing onto the container neck which is sealed by a tearable lid.
The object of the invention is to provide a cap wherewith the user, after rotating said cap, may easily grip part of the lid and effect complete tearing-off thereof.
According to the invention there is provided a screw-threaded cap for closing a container, said container having a neck that is formed with a screw-thread for engagement by the screw-thread on the cap, said neck being sealed by a tearable lid, wherein said cap has on an inner side thereof a helical blade, which blade is adapted to enter into cutting engagement with the lid as the cap is screwed down on the container neck, continued rotation of the cap being effective to form a cut part in the lid, said blade having a so-called "back end" which when considered in relation to the direction of rotation of the blade is curved inwardly relative to the blade to effect raising of the cut part of the lid.
Preferably the closure cap has at the bottom thereof a tearable ring which is adapted to bear on the container and prevent untimely screwing of the cap to cause the blade to enter and cut the lid.
Other details and advantages of the invention will stand out from the following description, given by way of non-limitative example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a section view of a closure cap clipped on a container neck, and before tearing the safety strip away.
Figure 2 is a top view showing both the cut lid and the .' ~

_ 2 1334659 71224-1 helical blade from the cap as shown in Figure 1.
The cap 1 as shown in the above figures, is provided with a first so-called clip-on projection 2, intended to enclose the outer projection 3 on the neck 4 from container 5.
To the top portion of the container neck 4, there is sealed by a conduction-welding process, a lid 6 which has been secured previously to screwing the cap 1 onto the container neck 4.
The neck 4 of the container 5 is provided with an outer screw-thread 7 for cooperating with an inner screw-thread 8 inside the cylindrical portion 9 of the cap 1.
On the other hand, the cylindrical portion 9 of cap 1 has a safety or tearable ring 10, provided with a tear strip 11.
As long as ring 10 has not been torn-off, the cap 1 can not be driven into lid 6.
The essential feature of the closure cap according to the invention is the presence on the inner surface of cap 1, of a helical blade 12. The helical blade 12 has the feature that the so-called "back" end 12' thereof is slightly curved inwardly relative to the helix.
This means that as cap 1 is being screwed down on the neck 4 of container 5 by a cooperation of screw-threads 7 and 8, the helical blade 12 is driven into lid 6 and cuts therein a notch of such shape that the user can grip the notch and tear the lid completely off. This is made all the easier as the curved portion 12' from helical blade 12 raises the cut notch of the lid slightly upwards. After unscrewing the cap, the user easily grips said raised cut portion of the lid and can tear it completely off.

.. . ...

_ 3 1 3~ q6~9 71224-1 It is indeed known that the lids which seal bottles or containers are often cut with a knife and it is then very difficult for the user to grip part of the lid to tear it completely off, while by means of the cap according to the invention provided with the helical blade, such tearing operation is made much easier.
The screw-thread used is quite clearly a fast thread which does not allow rotation of the cap by more than 360 during the cutting operation, since otherwise the cut portion of the lid would be completely cut-off, which is not the object of this invention.
It must be understood that the invention is not limited to the above embodiments and that many changes might be brought thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Claims (4)

1. A screw-threaded cap for closing a container, said container having a neck that is formed with a screw-thread for engagement by the screw-thread on the cap, said neck being sealed by a tearable lid, wherein said cap has on an inner side thereof a helical blade, which blade is adapted to enter into cutting engagement with the lid as the cap is screwed down on the container neck, continued rotation of the cap being effective to form a cut part in the lid, said blade having a so-called "back end" which when considered in relation to the direction of rotation of the blade is curved inwardly relative to the blade to effect raising of the cut part of the lid.
2. A closure cap as claimed in claim 1 having at a lower end thereof a tearable ring, said ring being adapted to bear on the container to prevent untimely screwing of the cap on the neck to a position to move said helical blade into cutting engagement with said lid.
3. A closure cap as claimed in claim 1 in which the cap has a clip-on projection that is adapted to engage an outer projection on the container neck.
4. A closure cap as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said screw-threads are designed so to limit rotation of the cap to less than 360° after the blade has been moved into cutting engagement with the lid.
