Abstract

ABSTRACT
A slide fastener having woven stringer tapes and woven-in plastics monofilament teeth produced during weaving, the stringer tapes being woven from ground warp yarns and adjacent double wefts of a continuous ground weft yarn, each tape having an associated tooth row and each tooth row being in the form of a plastics monofilament double weft, individual teeth of each row having a top arm and a bottom arm which in a projection on the fastener plane are disposed substantially one above another, the teeth having coupling heads and rear connecting parts securing warp yarns which are offset from one another lengthwise of the fastener relatively to the pick of the weft engaging over the tooth rows to secure the same to the stringer tapes, some double wefts of the ground weft yarns being disposed between adjacent teeth and other such double wefts being disposed in separate ground warp yarn pockets of the stringer tape under the teeth, characterised in that the double wefts of the ground weft yarns between adjacent teeth are drawn up by at least one securing warp yarn above the plane of the stringer tapes between adjacent teeth.

Description

~ 2 The invention relates to a slide ~astener having woven stringer tapes and woven-in plastics monofila-ment teeth produced during weaving, the stringer tapes be:ing ~b ~ ~ed from ground warp yarns and ad~acent double wefts Or a continuous ground weft - yarn and the tooth rows each being in the form of a plastics monofilament doubie weft, the individual teeth of the row having a top arm and a bottom arm which in a projection on the fastener plane are disposed substan-tially one above another, the teeth having coupling heads and rear connecting parts, securing warp yarns which are offset from one another lengthwise of the fastener rela-tively to the pick of the wefk engaging over the tooth rows to secure the same to the stringer tape9 some double wefts of the ground weft yarns being disposed between the teeth and other such double wefts being dis-posed below the:teeth in separate ground warp yarn pockets of a stringer tape zone below the teeth.

-In a slide fastener of this kind the ground weft yarn double wefts on the one hand and the monofilament double wefts on the other hand in the two halves Or the fastener are disposed in separate pockets disposed one above another perpendicularly to the fastener planeJ the-rows of teeth being secured in the manner described. The result is a soft and fle~ible slide 1 -- .

fastener, since the weft yarns of the stringer tape and the strlnger tape as a whole can move above the tooth rows in response to bending stresses in the fastener plane and in response to kinking. On obtains, however, a slide fastener the tooth pitch of which remains very stable and does not alter as a result of dyeing or washing or ironing.
Another problem with slide fasteners of the kind to C which the invention relates is their anti~kinking property.
This term denotes the transverse tensile strength of a slide fastener in response to kinking thereof "up" or "down" from the fastener plane~ Of course this property increases sub-stantiaIly parabolically with the radius of curvature near the kink angle - i.e., the smaller the kink angle, the worse is the ability to withstand kinking.
It is the object of the invention to improve the kink resistance (anti-kinking property) of a slide fastener of the kind described~
According to the invention, therefore, the double wefts of the ground weft yarns in the zone between the teeth are drawn up by at least one of the securing warp yarns beyond the plane of the stringer tapes into the zone between the teeth. A preferred embodiment is characterised in that the securing warp yarns engage over two teeth and below~the ground double-weft yarn therebetween, then engage below the next tooth between the bottom arm thereof and the double .

weft therebelow3 and are then secured in the stringer tape zone below the teeth; and the double wefts disposed bet-ween consecutive teeth are drawn by at least one of the securing warp yarns, as a ground weft padding loop, as far as or beyond the level of the top arms of the teeth. The starting point for the invention is that the kink resistance of slide fasteners of the kind of interest in the present C context can be improved by support pads disposed between the tooth top arms. The invention is based upon the recogni-tion that in slide fasteners of the kind referred to the kink resistance is irnproved by pads between the top arms of the teeth. The pads reduce the curvature of kinking arlsing in response to particular kinking forces - i.e. J they ensure that the radius of curvature at the kink is not too small -and thus increase the kink resistance. To control the ef-fect, the ground weft yarn double wefts disposed between khe c~ teeth are drawn up by more than one of the warp securing yarns to form a ground weft yarn padding loop. As a factor contributing to the required support effect, at least one o~ the ground warp yarns between adjacent teeth is also drawn as a ground warp yarn padding loop as rar as or above the level of the top arms of the teeth.
Within the scope of the invention the securing warp yarns can be secured to the stringer tape in any manner required. A preferred em~odiment of the invention is in .

~_. .

this respect caracterised in that the securing warp ya.rns engage, where they are secured to the stringer tape zone below the teeth, below two double wefts, the warp yarns engaging below one such double weft in the region between adjacent teeth and below the other double weft below the teeth. In another embodime:nt which has proved satisfactory, the securing warp yarns engage, where they are secured to . the stringer tape zone below the teeth, below the double weft between adjacent teeth, then extend between the bottom arm of the next tooth and the double weft therebelow to engage over the next two teeth. If, with the teeth inter-locked, the ground weft padding loops and/or the ground warp padding loops fill up the interval between adjacent tooth top arms and the locked coupling head, the risk of the fastener opening up accidentally is generally reduced;
in particular, however, the kink resistance is improved because the effect of the padding loops is that, with the ~ .
teeth interlocked, the coupling surfaces of the coupling heads are, so to speak, preloaded to engage with one an-other.
The invention will be described in greater detail hereinafter with reference to diagrammatic and enlarged drawings which show merely an example of embodiments of the invention and in which:

Fig. 11 is a plan view similar to Fig. 2 of another embodi-ment of a slide fastener in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 12 is a section on the line E-E of Fig. 11.
The slide fastener illustrated in Figures 1 to 10 has woven stringer tapes 1 and, woven therein, teeth 2 which are produced during weaving from plastics monofilaments. The stringer tapes 1 are embodied by ground warp yarns ~ and adjacent double wefts 4, 5 of a continuous ground weft yarn 6. Each tooth row 7 has teeth 2 which are picked as a plastics monofilament double weft and which each have a bottom arm 8 and a top arm 9, the arms being disposed sub-stantially one above another in a projection on to the fastener plane, the tee~h also comprising coupling heads 10 and rear connecting parts ll. Securing warp yarns 12 engage over the teeth 2 to secure the same to the stringer tape 1.
The double wefts 4, 5 are disposed between the teeth 2 and also therebelow in their own ground warp yarn pockets 13 in a zone of the stringer tape below the teeth 2. As can be gathered more particularly from Fig.s 1 and 6, the yarns 12 engage over two consecutive teeth 2 and below the double weft 5 therebetween. This feature is recognizable as the previously-mentioned offset of the securing warp yarns 12 by one "step" at a time lengthwise of the slide ~astener.
For the sake of clarity in Fig. 13 the staggered warp yarns are shown in different forms of line. After engaging over the two consecutive teeth 2 the yarn I2 engages below the next tooth 2 between bottom arm 8 thereo~ and the double weft 4 therebelow, whereafter the yarns 12 are secured in the stringer tape zone bèlow the teeth 2. As can also be gathered very clearly from Figs. 1 and 6, the between-teeth double wefts 5 are drawn by at least one of the yarns 12, as a ground weft yarn padding loop 14, as far as or~above the level of the top tooth arms 9. This feature can be understood better by comparing Figs. 2 - 5 and 7 - 10.
Figs. 5 and 10 show that the loops 14 between the tooth top arms 9 form pad-like elements. Also, one or more ground warp yarns 3 between adjacent teeth 2 can be drawn, as ground warp yarn padding loops 15, as far as or above the level of the tooth top arms 9, as can be gathered more particularly from Fig. 6 and for the rest from Figs. 7 - lOo In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the yarns 12 are secured to the stringer tape in a special way, engaging, where they are secured in the stringer tape zone below the teeth 2, below two consecutive double wefts 4, 5 - i.e., a double weft 5 disposed between adjacent teeth 2 and a double weft 4 disposed therebelow. In this connection there is a slight variation in the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 - 10.
- As will be apparents, the yarns 12 engage, where they are secured in the carrier tape zone below the teeth 2, below the between-teeth double weft 5, but then extend between the bottom arm 8 of the next tooth 2 and the double weft 4 therebelow to engaee over the next two teeth 2. Figs. 5 and lO show a preferred embodiment of the invention wherein, with the teeth 2 interlocked, the padding loops 14 and/or 15 fill up as a pad the interval between adjacent tooth top arms 9 and the locked coupling head 10, so that the coupling surfaces are, as it were, preloaded into engage-ment with one ano:her.

The slide fastener, some Or which is shown in ~igs. 11 and 12, has woven stringer tapes l and, woven therein, tooth rows 7 which consist of a plastics monofilament and which are produced during weaving. - For the sake of clarity in the Figures, weft yarns 6 of stringer tape 1 are shown in an exaggerated thickness whereas warp yarns ~ of tape 1 are shown in an exaggerated thinness as discrete dashes. In the sectional view given in Fig. 12, the securing warp yarns 12 to be described hereinafter are shown in solid line, chain-dotted line and in other forms of line to differentiate bet-ween dif~erently guided securing warp yarns 12.
In conformity with Figs. 1 to 10 one can gather firstly from Figs. 11 and 12 that the stringer tapes 1 are devised from the warp yarns 3, 12 and double wefts 4, 5, disposed one beside anotherJ of a continuous ground weft yarn 6. The tooth - rows 7 are in the form of a helical plastics monofilament double weft, the arms 8, 9 of the discrete teeth 2 being dis-posed subs-tantially one above another in projection on the fastener plane, the teeth 2 having coupIing heads 10 and rear ~ connecting parts ll. The ground weft yarns 6 extend as double weft as far as the coupling heads 10 which are of course ex-posed. The yarns 12 engage ~lternatel~ over the teeth 2 and~
alternately below the double we~ts of the yarns 6, conse-quently, the rows 7 as a whole are secured to the associated stringer tape 1. In all cases every other double we~t 4 of ~ 8 ~

~ 2 ~

the yarns 6 is disposed below the teeth 2 in separate stringer tape warp yarn poc:kets 13. The tapes 1 have near the teeth 2 a portion 16 which extends lengthwise of the fastener and which is embodied by double werts ~, 5 and ground warp yarns ~; to ensure pitch stability the double wefts 4, 5 are disposed below and then between the teeth 2.
The warp yarns 12 securing the teeth 2 to the tapes 1 are guided alternately in a special manner which can be gathered from Fig. 12. As will be apparant, securing warp yarns 12 extend above the stringer tape plane with an offset of two weft picks from one another; in a repeating pattern each such yarn 12 alternately engages over a pair of teeth 2 and the tooth 2 immediately following such pair, then below the next tooth 2 and so on. Also, each yarn 12 engages, between the engaged-over tooth pair 17 and the immediately following single tooth 2, below the ke~ween-teeth double weft 5. The yarns 12 also engage, between the engaged-over single tooth 2 and the immediately following engaged-under single tooth 2, below the corresponding double weft 5. The drawings 11 and 12 show four securing warp yarns 12 arranged as described~ but it lies within the scope of the invention to provide more or fewer yarns 12 than four; also, similarly guided securing warp yarns can be combined into groups.
The basis principle of the invention is illustrated by the embodiments shown in Figs. 1 to 10 as well as by
2~L

those shown in Figs. 11 and 12. This principle is caracte-rised in that the double werts 5 of the ground we~t yarns in the zone between the teeth 2 are drawn up by at least one o~ the securing warp yarns 12 beyond the plane o~ the stringer tapes 1 into the zone between the teeth 2.
