Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A novel hair conditioner and color restoring rinse is provided. It is basically an aqueous alcoholic suspension of precipitated sulfur, wherein for each 20 liters of solution the amount of ethanol is 1 - 2 liters, and the amount of pre-cipitated sulfur is 2.25 - 2.75 gm, said suspension having dissolved therein, sodium chloride, in an amount of 2.0 - 2.25 gm, lead acetate, in an amount of 0.15 - 0.25 gm, sodium thiosulfate, in an amount of 0.1 - 0.15 gm, a vegetable extract comprising camomile, in an amount of 90 - 110 ml and glycerine, in an amount of 18 - 22 gm. This product provided a hair conditioner which, among other things, restores the hair to its original color and condition and maintains it is such condition. It also tends to provide a perservative for fragile hair, to strengthen the growth of the hair, to purify the hair and to impart a natural gloss to the hair.

Description

This invention relates generally to cosmetic preparations for the hair. More particularly, it relates to hair rinsing compositions which tend to have the property of recoloring gre~ hair to its natural color.
Many cosmetic preparations are provided for the washing and the rinsing of hair. Canadian Patent No. 160,555 provides a composition containing sage leaves, grape roots, witch hazel, water, sulfur, alcohol and menthol for the purpose of restoring and grooming of hair.

.:
Canadian Patent No. 173,343 provides a hair restorer composi-tion containing alcohol, glycerine, bay rum, tincture of tobeba, tinc-ture of capsicum, lac sulfur, resorum, borax, salt, oil of citronella ., .
;~ and rain water, while Canadian Patent No. 369,577 provides a hair ., :
restorer composition containing sugar lead, sulfate iron, Florida water, lac sulfur, glycerine, olive oll, bay rum, iodlne and water. The lntended uses o~ those composltions were: to prevent the falling out of the hair; to restore the hair to its natural state; to eliminate dan ~i druff; and to provlde an inexpensive and effectlve hair restorer. -~
According to each of the patentees, each lpgredlent of the composltlon : is a heallng medlum, but when combined they were alleged to be peculiar-, .. . ..
ly effective for keeping hair and scalp in its natural condltion.

Canadlan Patent No. 278,476 provides a composltion lntended to ~, impart a permanent wave to the hair, and to provlde a preservative for dyed or fragile hair, the composition contalning borax, sodium thiosul-fate and mineral oil. The patentee alleged that the mineral oil and l sodium thiosulfate protected the hair so that lt would not become b~oken ~;

j or damaged under the influence of heat or steam.
Similarl~, Canadian Patent No. 457,827 was directed to a media for cold permanent waving, the composition containing a water soluble bisulfate having an organic cation, e.g. a nitrogenous organic base of low molecular weight at a pH of 5-6. It was alleged by the patentee that .. . .
the partlcular baslc cation used reduced the swelling inhibition charac-teristics of the formulation, maintained the bisulfate :ion structNre, '' ~ .''."''.

1 ' -.::

~ 4 3L ~
an~ provided an active swelling and relaxing agent, thereby giving the -` hair a more highly relaxed state.
Canaclian Patent No. 609,432 provided a composition which was intended for the treatment of dandruff, the composition containing alum, boric acid, sulE~lr and vinegar. It was alleged by the patentee that while most oE the individual ingredients were used to treat dandruff, ` the combination gave unexpectedly surprisingly good results.
On the other hand, Canadian Patent No~ 692,345 provi~ed a -~ shampoo for the purpose of providing a low freezing point shampoo, the - 10 shampoo containing water, detergent, glycerine and sor itol. It was :~ .
alleged by the patentee that the water was replaced by tlle antifreeze agent without a substantial change in viscosity. It was also alleged , , .
that, lf fro~en, the shainpoo would solldlfy 810wly and p2radua:lJy an(l ;, would not shatter gLass bottles.
i Canadian Patent No. 704,195 provided a composition containing sulfur, olive oil, oil of perfume, lanolin, alkonet root, and colloidon ' ', for the purpose of strengthening the growth of the hair, for purifying j the hair, and to lend the hair gloss and color.
Canadian Patent No. 783,533 provlded a composltion conta;ning ! 20 dipropylene glycol, methyl digal and glycerine as a shampoo having an 1 unexpectedly high solvency power for the grease of the hai2r.
1 Yet in spite 02C these compositions there still exlsts the need ! for a hair rinse which also serves as a hair conditioner and color 'j restorer.
1 By a broad aspect of this invention, then, a hair rinse is 2
2~ provided comprising an aqueous alcoholic suspension of ; ., :il precipitated sulfur, wherein for each 20 li-ters of solution .;

~ the amount of e-thanol is 1 - 2 liters, and the amount of . :

By one variant, -the hair conditioner also includes a perfume ex-tract -therein.

Many of the individual ingredients have been used in hair con-~,~ ditioning compositions before. Sulfur has been used as a drying agent ;
, and the perfume extract has been used to provide lustre to the hair and ,, ::, ,.
; a pleasing perfume. The selected vegetable ex~ract provideæ rinse-in coloring to the hair. Sodium thiosulfate has been used before to pro-tect hair so that it will not become broken or damaged under the ~
influence of heat or steam. However, it is surprising that the parti- ~ .
`l cular combination of ingredients, including some not known heretofore , to have a beneficial effect on the hair, can be used synergistically ~

It has been found that the above treatment restores the hair to its original condition and maintains the hair in its natural condi-tiOII. It also provides a preservative for fragile hair, strengthens the ~ ,-growth of the hair, purifies it and maintains its natural gloss and 1l color.
