These particulate materials are comprised of individually layered core particles of a metal compound having a relatively higher fracture resistance than the core, such as WC or TaC. These coated particles include an outer layer comprised of a metal, such as Co or Ni. Particles with these layers are compressed to form an article and the article is dense at pressures and temperatures at which full density is achieved without degradation of the core particle forming material.
