Um terminal digital remoto (RDT) é provido a um usuário local pela interface de uma pluralidade de dispositivos telefónicos e/ou dispositivos de dados (computadores ou uma rede de área local de computadores) com a LPN via uma conexão de linha auxiliar local, tal como uma Linha de Assinante Digital ou uma linha local auxiliar, sem fio. Um terminal digital hospedeiro (HDT) é provido no local de controle, com ou conectado à LPN, que coordena a transmissão do chamado da voz entre o RDT e um comutador (PSTN) da rede de telefones públicos ligados via LPN, e que coordena a transmissão de dados entre o RDT e a rede de dados com ou sem a LPN.
