A gear system for gearing a transmission in a vehicle includes a gear (150, Fig. 28) that has a shift lever (152, 207) movable between various gear positions, an electrical sensor device (160, 206) on the gearbox for sensing gear shift lever positions and a controller (208) connected to the sensor device and built to control the gearing of a transmission, based on signals from the sensor device indicating gear shift position. The controller and the sensor device, as a system, are able to determine the speed or acceleration of the gear shift lever and the controller is programmed to change the transmission gear control accordingly. The sensor device can be any one of a variety of different sensors, such as a continuous output potentiometer, a discrete output potentiometer, a series of switches, a membrane potentiometer, a deformable potentiometer of variable resistance, optical or mechanical readers, and the like.
