<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Descriptive memorandum filed in support of the invention patent application for "Handling device for loading bulk materials from sea ships" formed by: the company known as: ABAY S. A., rue de Genève 4,1140 BRUXELLES
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a handling device for the loading of bulk materials such as salts, fertilizers, ores, sulfur, sugar, starch, cereals and other pulverulent products. and by extension to the supply of seagoing vessels fitted with sealed and conditioned holds, whether or not equipped with internal load distribution handling, and which do not allow a supply in free fall.
To ensure the regular loading of sea vessels with unsealed and unconditioned holds, subjected in port facilities to natural tidal movements, roll, pitching, lateral deflections as well as changes in draft, telescopic chutes are used , vertical, flexible or not, attached at their upper part to a gantry or other support element overhanging the boat, the lower part of these chutes being free and placed above the product unloaded in the hold.
The mechanism ensuring the raising or lowering of the telescopic chute is generally constituted by a winch with cables or chains and lifting beams; an electrical device, with manual control, or other slaves to a certain extent the lifting mechanism of the chutes according to the level of the loaded product or the draft of the boat.
A serious drawback of these devices consists in the lack of automation of the mechanism ensuring the ascent and descent of the telescopic chute which results in interventions to adjust laterally and in height the portlque or the support element overhanging the boat. These devices are not suitable for loading seagoing ships fitted with waterproof and conditioned holds.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by proposing a reliable waterproof and automatic loading device requiring no intervention in service.
To this end, the handling device according to the invention is characterized in that it is composed of a telescopic chute which is
EMI3.1
attached to its upper part using a swivel gimbal-type support to a gantry beam overhanging the loading area of boats, at its lower part the chute is provided with a swivel gimbal-type hopper leaning on the flange of a boat bilge supply port. The weight of the chute ensures the maintenance of the hopper on the orifice, incidentally a locking device forming part of the boat could be used for the same function.
The combined action, rolled end supports and telescopic elements constituting the chute, while maintaining the connection between the gantry beam and the hold of the boat, compensates for all possible relative movements of the boat with respect to the gantry beam and this within a predetermined volume of gyration.
Preferably, in order, on the one hand, to prevent the introduction of outside air into the hold of the boat from the telescopic chute and, on the other hand, to allow the evacuation of the air volume from the wedge driven out as the latter is filled with the loaded product, the chute is surrounded by a double envelope ex-
EMI3.2
flexible connected at its upper part to an air extractor fixed on the gantry beam, so that the outside air near the gantry beam, air which is inevitably entrained by the product descending in the chute, and the air from the hold expelled by the incoming product, are immediately sucked in, by the air extractor, from the lower end of the hopper ending the telescopic chute.
The fine dust from the product released during loading is also captured by the air extractor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A mechanism ensures both the ascent, the descent and the holding in place of the lower end of the telescopic chute on the flange of the hold orifice of the hold and it is essentially constituted by a cable winch of lifting with two drums, placed on the gantry overhanging the boat, the lower ends of the lifting cables are connected to a swiveling circular lifter ensuring balancing, by an appropriate attachment device; these cables are kept permanently taut and automatically follow the lengthening or narrowing movements of the telescopic elements caused by the movements of the boat.
To this end, the winch is driven by an electric motor assembly which can, as the case may be, react as a traditional lifting motor or as a torque motor; a contactor placed at the end of the trough combined with a manual safety selector switches the motor unit to torque motor when the contactor and the end of the trunking which supports it are correctly pressed on the flange of the supply orifice of the hold. At this time the winch maintains a constant and predetermined tension in the lifting cables which can follow the lengthening or the narrowing of the telescopic chute caused by the different movements of the boat being loaded. Traditional safety devices are fitted to the winch.
At the lower end of the telescopic chute, a jam detector is provided which, in the event of blockage of the chock supply orifice, cuts off the electrical supply from the product transport element to the chute.
In order to better understand the invention, it is now described in relation to an appended drawing which shows by way of example and without limitation, a possible form of the invention.
