Grinding wheel for flattering and polishing
The present invention relates to a grinding wheel intended for flattering the edge of a glass using an automatic loading planer-flattering-chamfering-polishing machine, comprising a rotary gripping head intended to grip the glass by its base and to drive it in rotation, a means for bringing this gripping head and this glass in rotation towards two grinding or polishing elements scrolling in opposite directions, driven by floating motors, constantly distant from one 'other, and arranged symmetrically and secantly to the direction of this application, these elements being further on the one hand in the free state, located in a plane substantially perpendicular to this direction and on the other hand, at flattering course,
slightly bent by their contact with the glass drinker in diametrically opposite portions of this drinker.
It finds its main action in machines for flattering glasses.
The grinding or polishing element is formed therein by a rotary grinding wheel having a working surface perpendicular to its axis of rotation. The flitting glass is applied by its rim secantly against the abrasive surface of each of the grinding wheels, so as to undergo grinding according to two diametrically opposite contact arcs. The glass is substantially kept vertical and rotated about a stationary vertical axis during flattering.
We know from Belgian patent n [deg.] 670.504 an automatic loading glass fluttering machine comprising a head for gripping a glass by its base, in particular by its foot, a means for rotating the head gripping and the glass around the axis thereof, a means for feeding this gripping head in rotation towards the above-mentioned grinding or polishing tool and applying this glass in rotation against this rotary tool . Said tool is provided with two flat grinding or polishing discs. These discs, which are abrasive and flexible, are constantly distant from each other. They are arranged symmetrically with respect to the direction of application of the glass on them. They are, in the free state, located in the same plane roughly perpendicular to this direction.
The planes which these discs determine in the free state, form between them a slight angle so as to favor a progressive grinding by each of the two grinding wheels along the intersecting arcs of contact of the drinker with said grinding stones.
In fact, to improve the angle of attack of the edge of the glass, the pairs of grinding wheels intended for the same glass are advantageously inclined with respect to each other and with respect to the axis of rotation of the glass, so that their axis of rotation is substantially concurrent with the axis of symmetry of the glass. For this purpose, the part of the frame which supports a grinding wheel is orientable relative to the gripping head of the glass, in the direction of supply of the glass towards the grinding wheel.
Each grinding or polishing disc is mounted on a rotary plate, the face of which receives the disc, is lined with a succession of lasers of increasing diameter made of thin spring steel so as to stiffen the grinding wheel progressively when 'we are getting closer to the axis. This configuration makes it possible to predetermine an abrasive power during flattering, ensuring along the arc of contact of the rim with the grinding wheel a progressive increase in rigidity of the grinding wheel, and in the abrasiveness and the grinding rate of the grinding wheel .
Because of their high frequency of rotation of the discs, the glasses are sensitive to an abrupt accidental variation of the pressure, due for example to unevenness of the de-capped surface.
At the rotational speeds involved, even a small impact on a glass can cause the glass to break.
The Belgian improvement patent n [deg.] 696.828 proposes to mount the rotary discs on floating motors whose rotation shafts are subjected to an appropriate pneumatic pressure kept constant during the duration of glass flattering.
Each motor shaft rests on a ball cylinder fixed to the casing of this motor. The ball is supported in the free state on the bottom of the cylinder and is lifted from this seat during flattering under the action of a compressed gas ensuring the aforementioned pneumatic pressure.
The use of flexible flat discs on floating motors ensures good flattering efficiency, consistency in the quality of flatted glasses with a low breakage rate and good longevity of the discs.
The production capacity of an automatic stacker - flatterer - chamferer - polisher machine with 24 workstations can thus reach up to 45 glasses per minute when the glasses are perfectly matched.
The present invention aims to increase the capacity of such a machine, without increasing the number of work stations. It offers a grinding wheel which makes it possible to correctly flatter glasses presenting irregularities in the dealership, without breaking or chipping them. It also makes it possible to increase the grinding pressure substantially up to twice without the risk of causing the glass to melt and consequently makes it possible to increase the flow rate of ground glass as a function of the pressure applied.
For this purpose, each grinding wheel intended for flattering and polishing of glasses consists of a rotating abrasive disc with a diameter of 100 to 300 mm, having for soul a sheet of spring steel plate-shaped a 0.5 to 3 mm thick, shaped by stamping or turning followed by rectification.
The rectification of the diamond face of the plate-shaped grinding wheel is relatively easy to perform. Indeed, this operation can be carried out when the disc is still flat since the abrasive disc can be subjected to stamping after the rectification of the diamond concretion has been operated.
According to a feature of the invention, the core consists of a spring sheet of hardened and annealed annealed steel so as to have a ROCKWELL hardness

Other details and peculiarities of the invention will become apparent during the description of the drawings appended to this memo which illustrate schematically and by way of example only one embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a flattering device showing a gripping head, a glass, a pair of grinding wheels, in addition means for watering the contact areas between the glass rim and the abrasive working surfaces ; Figure 2 is a plan view of a flanking station using frustoconical grinding wheels according to the invention, and Figure 3 is an axial section similar to that of Figure 1, the large-scale profile of the flange a wheel.
In these three figures, the same reference notations designate identical or analogous elements.
As illustrated in FIG. 1, a flattering device designated as a whole by the reference notation 1 comprises a frame 2 on which is mounted at least one rotary gripping head 3 consisting of a clamping mandrel enabling a glass to be aligned or cup along an axis of symmetry.
The glass 4 or the cup enclosed by its foot 5, respectively by its base in the clamping mandrel, is rotated around a common vertical axis L, L '. The drink 6 of the glass 4 driven in rotation, is placed secantly by two diametrically opposite axes of its drink symmetrically on the marginal zone of a pair of grinding wheels, 7,8, driven in rotation by floating motors 9, such as described in Belgian patents n [deg.] 670,504 and 696,828.
To ensure that a pair of 7.8 rotary discs acting on the rim of the same glass 4 to be flattered, have better abrasive power, provision is made to rotate the two discs 7 and 8 as well as the glass 4, arranged in a secant manner. on the two discs 7 and 8 in the same direction of rotation Z which in the case illustrated in FIG. 1 is the clockwise direction.
Subsequently, a grinding wheel 7.8 according to the invention comprises a core which is constituted by an annular disc formed by a flat sheet 10 of spring steel having a thickness of between 1.0 and 1.5 mm and preferably 1, 2 mm.
After cutting and dimensioning, the sheet 10 is first heat treated and then rectified on both sides 11 and 12. The heat treatment gives the sheet 10 a ROCKWELL hardness of between 40 and 50 HRc allowing it, without be excessively deformed, to resist the stresses applied to it during flattering and polishing and in particular to bending forces.
ROCKWELL hardness simply gives an idea of the elasticity of the sheet used. This sheet is advantageously made of a spring steel conforming to the AISI standard.
1095 and cited as an example. It can also be made of steel conforming to AFNOR XC 100 standard.
According to the invention, an oblique flange 13 relative to the surface of the central working area 14 of the disk 7.8 is arranged in the rotary disc 7.8 by stamping, this flange 13 being inclined in a direction opposite to that towards which the face 11 carrying the abrasive mass is presented.
The deflection angle of the flared peripheral rim 13 is relatively small, but sufficient to considerably improve the entry of the rim 6 of the glass 4 to flatter on the grinding wheel.
The obliqueness of the section edge of the stamped disc also has the effect of increasing the rigidity of the sheet
10.
In a particular embodiment, illustrated in FIG. 3, the declination of the rim 13 reaches 0.5 to 1.5 mm over a radial distance of between 5 and 15 mm, in particular 0.7 to 0.8 mm over a radial distance of 7.5 mm.
The flat surface portion of the central zone 14 makes it possible to treat the edge of the glasses 4 with a rate much higher than that hitherto achieved in currently known machines.
Under the effect of the low flattering thrust exerted by the glass 4 against the grinding wheels 7,8 as soon as it is brought into contact 6 on the grinding tool 7,8, the floating motor shaft 9 supported pneumatically absorbs the shock and gradually withdraws under constant pressure until it stops at the end of the stroke.
As the pressure force of the drinker 6 on the grinding wheel 7.8 is kept unchanged, since it is considered that the flattering operation has not been completed, during the second part of the flattering operation, a progressive deformation of the grinding wheel 7,8 which bends slightly in the direction of the pressure force of the glass.
In fact, it is the flexibility of the grinding disc 7.8 which alone takes up the pressure force exerted by the glass 4 on the disc 7.8.
We therefore see the importance of stiffening the grinding wheel by a succession of flanges in the central area and retaining flexibility in the perispherical area. The present invention achieves this goal. It also improves by its curved shape the smooth entry of the rim on the grinding wheel. It ensures progressive grinding of the glass and eliminates the probability of impacts between the drink 6 of the glasses 4 and the grinding wheels 7,8.
Since the grinding wheels 7, 8 according to the invention can be mounted in pairs and flat in the same flattering plane, the abrasive surface in contact with the rim of the drink of glasses 4 determined by arcs of diametrically opposite circles, is greater than in known flattering devices, while ensuring excellent entry. In addition, the contact surface can be adjusted at will, by modifying the spacing of the grinding wheels, according to the diameter of the glasses to be flattered. A variable spacing between the discs also makes it possible to use a larger portion of abrasive surface in order to obtain a homogeneous wear of all the active surface available of the grinding wheel.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the constitution and the arrangement of some of the elements involved in its realization, provided that these modifications do not are not inconsistent with the subject of each of the following claims.
