"Improvements to brake reels for fishing rods" "Improvements to brake reels for fishing rods"
The invention relates to improvements to drag reels for fishing rods, more specifically reels
of the type whose drum is mounted on an axis which can be driven by means of a crank, said axis being provided with a braking mechanism whose impact on this axis is adjustable.
This adjustment of known drag reels can be influenced in two ways.
The first adjustment is substantially constituted by a button mounted on the end of said axis directed towards the fisherman, and mounted in the housing of the drag reel, both in a rotary manner and axially displaceable so as to be able to effect, via 'a compression spring, a push on said brake mechanism and thus gradually adjust the braking of said drum.
The second adjustment of said drum of the brake reels currently on the market consists substantially of a lever located near the rod itself, so that it can be actuated by the fisherman without having to let go of the rod. Said lever acts, via rod and lever,
on said braking mechanism directly so
to allow the fisherman to intervene instantly on the course of said drum independently of said first brake setting.
However, this second adjustment, although desired by the fishermen, turned out to be too abrupt, hence, a.a., risk of breaking the fishing line.
The improvements according to the invention relate more particularly to said second adjustment while aiming to avoid an abrupt adjustment and to ensure, on the contrary, an entirely progressive adjustment.
To this end, these improvements, applied to brake reels for fishing rods, of the type whose drum is mounted on a spindle which can be driven by means of a crank and in which the spindle is provided with a first mechanism brake consisting of pairs of discs engaged between a fixed part of the housing and a spring working in compression and on which a pressure adjusting element acts, and a second braking mechanism for effecting temporary braking, are characterized by- that the second braking mechanism is substantially constituted by a drum fixed on said axis, and a cable, rope or the like fixed at one end to the housing and at the other end to a control lever, said cable, rope or the like being wound in several bearings on said drum.
In order to bring out more clearly the characteristics of the invention, an embodiment is described below, by way of example, without limitation, with reference to the attached drawing in which is shown, schematically and in longitudinal section , a drag reel on which the improvements according to the invention are applied.
According to the present improvements is fixed on axis 6,
a small drum 15 on which are wound a number of windings of a cable, cord or the like 16 one end of which is connected, at 17, to the housing 4 and the other end of which is connected, at 18, to the free end of the arm 19 of a bent lever 20, the arm 21 of which protrudes from the hollow part 5 of the housing 4 through an opening 22. The lever 20 is articulated on a pivot 23.
The part of the cable, cord or the like 16 lying between the drum 15 and the fixing point 18 can be housed in a sheath 23.
During normal use of the reel, the drum 15 rotates freely in the above windings, while at the time when the arm 21 of the lever 20 is secured by the fisherman, the cable, rope or the like 16 is gradually stretched over this drum, thus causing progressive braking of the axis 6, respectively of the drum 7.
It is obvious that the number of windings is determined in relation to the envisaged braking and / or the material of which the cable, rope or the like is made.
It is thus obtained that the aforesaid second adjustment of the braking, by the fact of its progressiveness, avoids breaks in the line by braking.
The invention is in no way limited to the execution described above and illustrated in the drawing, but it is possible
to carry out improvements in all forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the invention.
