<EMI ID=1.1>
(figure 2).
(figure 3).
<EMI ID=2.1>
avantageuse.

: Mr. Giovanni CODENOTTI Installation for drying metal fragments before their use in melting furnaces.
The metal fragments or turn, whether ferrous or non-ferrous, must be dried to remove the liquid they contain, before their use in melting furnaces. Indeed, the turn coming from the machines used always contains liquid, on average in quantity of 3 to 5%, formed of oil residues or size coolers, solvents, additives, water, etc ... If these liquids are not not removed beforehand, when the turn is heated in the melting furnaces, these liquids tend to produce agglomerates and formations of compact layers on the surface of the molten material.
The gases released by the presence of these liquids also tend to cause detonations, flames and polluting fumes and, in contact with metal, they determine the formation of oxides and slag and a subsequent reduction in the metal.
It has been proven that the loss of metal during melting is directly related to the liquid contained in the starting form. A control based on numerous tests of fusion of brass turnings revealed a loss of molten metal of approximately 30% in the presence of a significant content of liquid in the starting turn, against a loss of metal from 2 to 3% when using dried twist. For drying the turn after washing processes with solvents, centrifugation, etc., which are sources of waste and major causes of pollution, installations of various kinds have already been proposed in which the material to be dried goes through a dryer and is heated directly by a heat source which burns a combustible gas. Speak
heating the material, we obtain the evaporation of the liquids contained therein, and thus the formation of vapors. Some of these burn in the dryer in contact with the material heating fire, while the remains are collected and evacuated outside the dryer and normally burned in an afterburner using another burner.
Such installations are rather complex and bulky and involve, on the one hand, a high consumption of energy and, consequently, high operating costs, also because they do not allow the calorific value of the vapors produced to be used. which is important and, on the other hand, cooling and filtering devices for smoke before evacuation into the atmosphere to avoid pollution.
The post-combustion element is also subject to frequent obstructions by the dust conveyed by the
<EMI ID = 1.1>
disadvantages and disadvantages from the functional point of view, are quite complicated and cumbersome and normally require foundations and special constructions considerably increasing the installation costs which are added to the high operating costs.
The present invention relates to an installation for drying the turn or ferrous or non-ferrous fragments before their use in melting furnaces, characterized in that it comprises a dryer or oven, with a vertical axis, in which extends transversely a drum which contains a conveyor for the material, in that the material is heated indirectly through said drum by means of a burner provided in the dryer to evaporate the liquid contained in the material, while an inert gas is admitted in the drum to maintain an atmosphere 3
protective to prevent oxidation of the material, and in that the vapors formed in said drum are sent and burned in the drier or oven to heat the material in the drum, the material to be dried moving in the drum to against the current or in the direction of the current with respect to the path of the products of combustion.
To this end, the installation comprises a dryer or oven with a vertical axis in which transversely extends a rotary drum which contains a conveyor for advancing the material, in this case ferrous or non-ferrous fragments, to be dried. The material is heated indirectly through the drum, against the current or in the direction of the current, to evaporate the liquid contained, while in the drum, a protective atmosphere is constantly maintained by admission of an inert gas to prevent the oxidation of matter. The vapors leaving the drum are sent and burned in the dryer to heat the material passing through the drum and make the management of the installation self-sufficient.
The vapors leaving the drum can also be treated to recover the oily content, for example by distillation.
Consequently, the object of the invention is to provide an installation for drying metal turnings or fragments, in which a post-combustion of the fumes or vapors leaving the drum through which the material passes, is provided, carried out directly in the dryer or furnace by the use of vapors instead of a fuel for heating the material to be dried.
Another object of the invention is to provide an installation using a single burner device and in which the smoke filtering devices can be reduced if not eliminated, with the advantage of less complexity and a reduction in operating costs. and maintenance.
Another object of the invention is to provide an installation which includes a drum-transporter which can be tilted from the bottom upwards to favor the exit of the fumes or vapors produced by the drying of the material and to simplify the arrival as well that the evacuation of the material in the transporting drum, eliminating the need for lifting means at the inlet and at the outlet of said drum. This does not exclude that, without departing from the scope of the invention, the drum and the conveyor which it contains may also be arranged horizontally or inclined downwards towards the outlet of the material.
The invention will be described below in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a schematic view of the installation; Figure 2 shows a vertical section of the dryer and the drum extending therein; Figure 3 shows, in section, a detail of the drum at the part of the inlet of the material and the inert gas to maintain a protective atmosphere in said drum; FIG. 4 shows in section the burner apparatus of the dryer or oven; and Figure 5 shows a cross section along the arrows V-V in Figure 2.
In these drawings, 1 denotes the dryer or oven in which extends, transversely, a drum 2 which encloses a conveyor 3 for advancing the material to be dried.
The dryer or oven 1 delimits a chamber 4, of cylindrical or other shape, with a vertical axis, at the top of which a gas burner 5 is provided tangentially. The bottom of the chamber 4 can be flat or, preferably, shaped as a hopper 6.
The drum can be arranged with its axis inclined from the bottom upwards from its mouth 7 for loading the material to be dried up to its end 8 from which the dried material and the fumes or vapors produced by drying emerge.
The drum 2 extends concentrically in a tubular part 9 formed on the body 1 of the dryer and through the chamber 4, right through.
The drum 2 can be rotary and then its two portions located on either side of the dryer 1 are supported on rotating support means 11 and, for its rotation, said drum 2 is provided with a 12-chain chain transmission by a gear motor 13.
The conveyor 3 for the material can be formed of a plate with a screw advancement means 14, fixed on the internal surface of the drum 2 over its entire length for the movement of the material from the loading mouth 7 to at the end 8 of the drum from which the dried material comes out.
The inclination of the drum 2 and of the conveyor 3 which is included therein promotes the separation of the fumes or vapors from the material being dried, as well as the exit of the fumes from the drum 2.
This separation between smoke or vapor and material is helped and practically obtained by a sleeve 17 fixed on the projection of the last screw thread 14 of the conveyor inside the drum 2
(figure 2). Said sleeve 17 defines with the drum 2 a longitudinal annular passage for the material and, axially, a duct 18 for the only fumes or vapors. This contributes to keeping the temperature of the fumes or vapors almost unchanged and can also allow the material to cool before it is discharged from the drum 2 to the transfer device 16.
To allow this cooling of the material, the last part of the drum 2 can be surrounded by a coil heat exchanger 19, with air circulation leading to a vacuum cleaner 19 '.
The cooling air is circulated countercurrently with respect to the advancement of the material and the hot air leaving the exchanger 19 can be advantageously used as combustion air for the supply of the burner 5, operating in the dryer. 1.
Although the inclined position of the drum 2 and of the conveyor 3 which it contains is obviously the most advantageous, it is not excluded that, for any requirements, the drum 2 may be arranged horizontally or may be inclined downwards from the part where the material is loaded and said drum is stationary or vibrating, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention. Likewise, the conveyor 3 can be constituted, instead of a plate with a screw advancement means, by a conveyor belt or by a roller or buffer plane, not shown.
In all cases, in the chamber 2 ′ defined by the rotary drum 2, the inert gas is sent to maintain in said drum a protective atmosphere and prevent the oxidation of the material during drying. The admission of inert gas into the chamber 2 ′ of the drum 2 can be carried out for example by means of an injector
112 placed on said drum at the mouth 7 of the material inlet
(figure 3).
On the opposite end 8 of the drum 2, on the other hand, a suction mantle 20 is provided to collect the fumes or vapors which separate from the material being dried; said coat 20 is connected by a pipe 21 to the top of the drier or oven to bring the fumes or vapors therein. The inlet 22 of the fumes or vapors into the dryer is provided opposite or adjacent to the zone in which the burner 5 operates so that the flames thereof
cause the combustion of said fumes or vapors.
Advantageously, the fumes or vapors are sent through the pipe 21 (FIG. 4) into an annular chamber 41 surrounding the body of the burner 5 and delimited by a sleeve 42. Concentrically, at. the outside of the annular chamber 41, a second annular chamber 43 is provided in which flows through an opening
44, the combustion air which can be, for example, that which leaves the heat exchanger 19 mentioned above. Such a system makes it possible to use the fuel burner 5 for starting up the installation and until the drying process is established and the production of smoke or vapors in the drum.
When the flow of these fumes or vapors to the dryer or oven is regular and sufficient and thus their combustion is started, the combustible gas supplying the burner 5 is reduced to the only quantity necessary to keep the pilot flame of said burner lit . Then, all the heat required by the drying process is provided exclusively by the combustion of fumes or vapors from the drying of the material.
In practice, the hot fumes originating at the start, from the burning of a fuel by the gas burner and, subsequently, from the burning of the vapors released by the drying of the material and which leave the drum, invest the external surface of the drum 2 and , passing along a passage 23 formed between the rotating drum and the tubular part 9, are discharged through a pipe 24 placed near the mouth 7 of the drum. In the example shown, the heat exchange between smoke and material to be dried takes place countercurrently and indirectly through the drum without any direct contact between the products of combustion and the material. The latter and the vapors released into the drum are thus protected against contact with the flames and, thanks to the atmosphere of
inert gas created in the drum chamber, the material is not subject to oxidation.
The effluent fumes from the pipe 24 are brought into a heat exchanger 25 (FIG. 1) which lowers the temperature to the desired values and, then, into a cyclone 26 which reduces the dust and, finally, only if necessary, in a bag filter 27 before discharge into the atmosphere through a chimney
28 in connection with blowing means which ensure the circulation of gaseous fluids throughout the installation.
From the foregoing, there is obviously the simplicity and efficiency of the installation and the possibility of profitable and advantageous use as fuel, directly in the drier, of the fumes or vapors originating from the drying of the material. On the other hand, the material is treated in a closed chamber, that is to say separately from the products of combustion, which makes it possible to maintain a protective atmosphere which prevents the oxidation of the material and reduces the loss of metal when it is melted in the melting furnaces.
The installation described may, in addition, present other
<EMI ID = 2.1>
advantageous.
One of these arrangements is constituted by the hopper-shaped bottom 6 provided, as said above, at the base of the chamber 4 of the dryer. Thanks to the vertical arrangement of a chamber 4, the dust and solid particles circulating in the dryer can be deposited on said hopper bottom 6 from where they can be collected periodically by means of a conveyor 29 which is installed there (FIG. 2). This keeps the dryer properly clean without having to stop the installation for direct operator access.
Inside the tubular part 9 through which the drum 2 passes, is mounted a scraper 30 intended to act on the external surface of said drum and to keep it clean of solid deposits. Said scraper 30 is for example carried by the arm 31 to be. supported and positioned radially with respect to the drum (figure
5). On the surface of the drum 2 is fixed a fixed scraper 32 which, rotating with the drum, ensures the removal of solid deposits on the internal surface of the tubular part to keep the passage 23 free for the fumes directed towards the discharge pipe. 24. In the body 1 of the dryer is finally provided a fresh air intake
33, with controlled opening to prevent overheating of the dryer.
Finally, it should be noted that the vapors leaving the drum, or at least part of them, can be treated to recover the cooling oil and / or the other components by these appropriate distillation processes or the like.
