Abstract
The installation includes a vertical drying kiln (1) and a drum which extends transversely through the kiln and contains a scrap conveyor. The scrap is heated indirectly across the drum by means of a burner, mounted in the kiln, while inert gas is fed into the drum to maintain a protective atmos. The resulting vapours are collected and burned in the kiln. The scrap to be dried is displaced in the drum in the same direction or in counter-current to the flow of combustion prodts. Also claimed is a similar installation in which the resulting vapours are passed to a unit for recovery of one or more of the evaporated liq. components. Used for treating scrap (non-)ferrous metal particles and turnings to remove residues of oils, coolants, solvents, additives, water etc, prior to charging into a melting furnace. The scrap is protected against oxidn, the vapour product can be used as the fuel in the burner and the installation requires a minimum of fume filtering equipment.
