<EMI ID=1.1>

Distribution of drinks.
The present invention relates to the distribution of drinks and in particular, but not exclusively, the production and distribution of freshly brewed drinks such as coffee and tea.
Over the years, several different systems have been proposed for freshly brewing coffee and tea. These systems usually involve some form of filtration to separate the coffee grounds
or the tea leaves of the drink for consumption and preferably some form of sealed packaging to maintain the freshness of the coffee or
tea before use.
The idea of sealing fresh coffee or tea in individual packages of airtight material that has filter material is not new. The packaging is only opened at the time of use, water is introduced into it and the extracted liquid is discharged, the coffee grounds or tea leaves being retained by the filter material. The packaging is
then thrown away.
The distribution of coffee or tea by means of such packages gives rise to several difficulties, in particular when these packages are intended to be used in machines for dispensing drinks.
At least two main areas have been identified in which efficient handling of these packages presents difficulties. The first of these areas can be qualified as the water introduction area and includes the mechanism for opening the package and introducing water. In certain known embodiments, provision is made to open the upper end of the packaging by sectioning and to introduce water therein by gravity. This process not only presents imponderables like
unpredictable filtration time and variable infusions from one package to another, but in addition it can be slow (which gives a cold drink). he
can also be unsanitary in the sense that marc
coffee may spill over the top of the package.
Another difficulty lies in the efficient handling of the packaging in a beverage dispenser. For various reasons, in particular for hygiene, it is desirable that a certain automation be carried out between the introduction of the packaging, the distribution of the drinks and the evacuation of the packaging. This imposes an efficient mechanism for mechanically handling these packages.
Another difficulty lies in obtaining an accurate distribution of the beverage from the packaging in a container such as a cup or a cup without splashing and without unnecessary dripping.
Beverage containers have now been developed which avoid these and other difficulties.
In particular, a separate device for introducing water into the packaging has been developed (for example a nozzle in which a hollow water introduction needle is inserted) and a device which behaves in a way which makes it possible to
machine treat the sachet. These two devices can be combined. Stores containing many of these packages can be loaded into a suitable beverage dispensing machine. The individual packages can be removed one by one from this store when and as necessary for their use. They can be moved in the machine, through the various stages required for the extraction of a drink, by mechanisms cooperating at least with the positioning means of the machine. If desired, exhausted packages can be loaded into an empty store, which is advantageously removed when full. Alternatively, packaging stores may be contained in a separate dispenser from the beverage dispensing machine.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a sealed beverage package made of a material substantially impermeable to air and water containing a product intended to provide a beverage when it is brought into contact with an aqueous agent, the package comprising a separately fabricated positioning device for positively maintaining an aqueous agent introducer in tight contact with the package, so that an aqueous agent can be introduced into the package and be put
in contact with the product and that a drink can be extracted from the packaging by an outlet formed in the packaging in service.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a store comprising several sealed beverage packages in accordance with the invention.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a rigid nozzle for use in a sealed beverage package according to the invention as
as a positioning device for the introduction of the aqueous agent.
According to a fourth aspect of the invention, it
there is provided a method for producing a drink, according to which a sealed drink packaging is provided in accordance with the invention, the packaging is placed at an aqueous agent introduction station so that a device for introducing a the aqueous agent is in communication with the positioning device of the packaging, aqueous agent is introduced into the packaging and a drink is extracted from this packaging after the aqueous agent has been brought into contact with the product supplying the beverage, an outlet having been formed in the sealed package before or while the package is in the aqueous agent introduction station.
According to a fifth aspect of the invention, there is provided a beverage dispensing device intended
to provide a drink from a wood-sound packaging according to the invention which comprises an aqueous agent introduction device and a device for allowing the positioning device of the packaging to cooperate with the introduction of aqueous agent.
The positioning device is preferably a rigid element comprising at least one passage which is formed therein and which is intended to be engaged by the device for introducing an aqueous agent. The rigid element can be tubular and can be made of a suitable plastic.
The positioning device can be fixed partly in the packaging and partly outside of it, for example in a seal of the packaging or, alternatively, it can be fixed outside the packaging or, in yet another variant, it can be housed completely in the packaging, for example be fixed to an internal wall of the packaging. The packaging and the positioning device can be supplied separately when the positioning device has to be attached to the outside of the packaging.
The packaging can be made of flexible plastic material in the form of a sachet.
The packaging may further comprise a device by means of which it can be positively held in one or more stations of a beverage dispensing machine and the aqueous agent introduction device as well as the positioning device of the machine can be separated or combined in the same element.
The package may contain a permeable filter
<EMI ID = 1.1>
with the product providing the drink or, if filtration is not necessary, the filter can be omitted.
As another variant of a rigid element, the positioning device may comprise a deformable element, for example a ring of elastic material, attached to the outside or inside of the packaging and suitable for being attacked by sealingly by the aqueous agent introduction device.
The beverage dispensing device may include mechanical means for engaging the device for introducing an aqueous agent into the positioning device and may include mechanical means for handling or treating the packaging. The apparatus may include a device for providing an outlet in a package.

Reference is made below to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3. FIG. 1 illustrates the partially assembled bag. An air and water impermeable substance sheet layer 2 is provided. This material is typically a laminate forming barrier layer comprising plastic layers and metallized layers bonded to each other. Numerous laminates of this kind are known and the example currently shown comprises an aluminum metallized polyester layer bonded to polypropylene, the aluminum layer being juxtaposed between the polyester layer and the polypropylene layer. The polypropylene layer is the inner layer.
On the internal face of this material in
sheet 2 is arranged a layer of filter sheet material 4 of a type and porosity suitable for filtering coffee grounds and tea grounds. It can be a filter paper or a product other than paper, such as a spun-welded polypropylene sheet. The filter material extends over the entire width of the sheet material 2, but stops a short distance from the upper end and across a V-shaped bottom region
6 of the material 2 (but without extending into it).
A plastic nozzle 8 comprising a cylindrical flow channel closed by a plastic cap is provided at the upper part of the material 2.
Fig. 2 illustrates the finished bag. The side edges are heat welded to each other at 10 and 12: the internal plastic layer of the material sheet and the filter material 4 are welded to each other in the heating zone to seal materials 2 and 4 at these edges.
Freshly ground coffee 14 in an amount sufficient for a cup of coffee is loaded into the packaging formed by materials 2 and 4. The loading can be carried out vertically by a tube, not shown, from a supply of this matter. The upper edges 16 of the material 2 are then heat welded so as to seal faces opposite one another as well as to the nozzle 8 made of plastic. Filling and welding can be carried out under an inert gas atmosphere, so that the sealed pouch thus formed contains coffee packaged in the absence of oxygen. The bag of FIG. 2 is ready to be loaded in a store or a dispenser with other similar sachets for later use in a beverage dispensing machine.
Fig. 3 schematically illustrates the manner in which a drink is extracted from a selected sachet. As shown in the drawing, the bag has been removed from its storage area, for example a magazine, and supported by bars 28 in the machine, it is kept in a beverage dispensing station. The bottom of the bag is cut or pierced (shown diagrammatically by means of the two pairs of scissors) below the fold in the filtering material 4, in the zone formed by the V-shaped region 6 of the material 2. A hollow needle 30 is pressed in nozzle 8, puncturing the cover which covers its flow channel. Hot water is injected, preferably at moderate pressure, through needle 30 into the bag, and coffee flows from the bottom end of the bag into a cup (not shown).
The coffee grounds are retained by the filter paper 4. The needle is withdrawn from the nozzle 8 and the sachet is discarded.
Fig. 4 illustrates a magazine 20 formed of a carcass comprising two parallel upper bars
22. The bags 24 are loaded in the magazine and are positively supported in this magazine, their nozzles 8 sliding between the bars 22 and their upper flanges being supported
on the bars 22. In order to use this magazine in a machine for dispensing drinks, an end bar 26 is blown closing one end of the space provided between the rails 22 and the magazine is introduced into a the machine of a suitable form yard to receive the store. We can then extract bags one by one mechanically from the magazine and process them by machine, guiding them to the corresponding dispensing locations determined by mechanisms cooperating with the nozzle 8. To help position the magazine correctly in the machine, notches 27 cooperate with corresponding locks on the machine.
It is not necessary to adapt the magazine so that it can be inserted into the beverage dispensing machine or remove the bags mechanically. For example, it may be desirable to provide a bag dispenser separate from the beverage dispensing machine, this dispenser receiving bag stores. The user must remove a sachet from the dispenser and introduce it into the beverage dispensing machine.
Fig. 5 illustrates a second embodiment of the invention in which a base flange 40 of the nozzle 8 is fixed to the material in
sheet 2 (for example by ultrasonic welding or by heat welding, by bonding techniques or by techniques using snaps) so as to be on the external surface of the sachet. The nozzle may be on the side of the bag, but
if we want to place it on its upper end,
another fold 41 and welding the top edges of
the sheet material 2 on one side gives the appropriate result, as shown in FIG. 5.
Although, in the embodiment of FIG. 5, the sheet material 2 maintains the barrier preventing the entry of air through the nozzle 8 before use, it may still be desirable to keep the thin cover (shown at 42) to exclude dust from the flow channel of the nozzle before use. In this example, it is clear that in use, the needle 30 must pierce the sheet material 2 to introduce water into the sachet.
Fig. 6 illustrates another sachet in accordance with the invention. In this embodiment, the material
sheet is juxtaposed and glued at the lateral marginal junctions 50. Lower and upper junctions 52 are formed by folds 54. The filter sheet material 4 extends between the lateral marginal junctions 50 and comprises a lower fold 56. The upper edges 58 of the sheet material 4 are glued to the adjacent faces of the sheet material 2 to prevent coffee from going down into the gap between them in region 6 (from where it could fall into the cup of the user when a drink is extracted from the sachet). The bag is also closed along a main lateral face by a marginal junction 60. The nozzle 8 is ultrasonically welded to an upper zone 62 of the bag.
One aspect of the invention relates to the mixing of various beverage components in the sachet. For example, coffee produces four different accepted drinks: black coffee or milk, with or without sugar. Although it is obviously possible to mix all the required ingredients (for example coffee and / or milk and / or sugar) in a sachet pocket, this might prove undesirable since it is possible that the storage and brewing of freshly ground coffee are not satisfactory on contact with these other ingredients. It is possible to avoid this difficulty by adding these possible ingredients separately to the cup of brewed black coffee, but it could also be desirable to avoid this additional operation since it complicates the dispensing by the machine.
Fig. 7 illustrates a variant of a sachet in accordance with the invention which makes it possible to avoid this difficulty.
In Fig. 7, the sheet material 2 is provided with two bottom plies 80, 82, the filtering material 4 starting from a lateral face of the material 2 to which it is bonded at 84. The lower end of the material 4 adheres to a side face of a lower median ply 88 of material 2. Another sheet 90 of the material substantially impermeable to air and to water leaves the adhesion region on the side face of the ply 88 and s' extends up to the top edge of the bag. Thus constructed, the bag comprises two compartments which are substantially impermeable to air and to water 92, 94 one of which, compartment 92, is further divided by the sheet material 4 insulating a sub-compartment in which ground coffee is contained in C. This sub-compartment is isolated from the two
lower folds 80, 82. "Milk" and W / S sugar are contained in compartment 94.
In service, the sachet is cut or pierced along line XX and water is introduced through the nozzle 8. Coffee is extracted from ground coffee C and is filtered and placed in an appropriate receiving container, as in the forms above, while the "milk" and the W / S sugar are deposited from the sachet into the receiving container in order to be mixed there.
Another possible arrangement to maintain
components for beverages separated until the time of their use, is not shown and includes a sachet similar to that of FIG. 2, but with a heat or pressure-sensitive solder which extends horizontally across the sachet at a certain distance from its lower part. Two chambers are thus obtained, one of which can be used for ground coffee or leaf tea and the other of which can be used for the second constituent, for example
milk and / or sugar. Ground coffee or leaves
of tea are retained in the filter material, but the other constituent can, as desired, be retained from
this way or be present below the lower level of the filter material. In service, the fact of injecting water into the sachet breaks the horizontal sealing and allows the two constituents to escape from the sachet when the latter is open at its base.
Although it is advantageous to use the nozzle on the sachet, as described above, both for handling. machine and for the positioning of a water introduction device, this is not essential. For example, a separate spindle can be placed on the packaging for machine handling and the nozzle may not be used
as for the positioning of the water introduction device.
Another drink bag according to the invention is illustrated in FIG. 8. The nozzle 8 is made of molded polypropylene and has lateral wings 100 welded to the edges of the sheet material 2 which is substantially impermeable to air and to water. These wings are also shown in plan in the embodiment of the nozzle of FIG. 13 and have the form of organs 224 which form an integral part thereof. The sealed welding of the edges of the sheet material 2 is shown in dotted lines and ends at a fold 102 located at the lower edge. The orifice passing through the nozzle 8 and opening into the bag is closed by a layer 104 which can be, for example, made of the same material as the sheet material 2 impermeable to air and to water.
In service, the sachet is designed so that its base can be opened (to allow the drink to escape after infusion), the customer tearing off for this purpose a lower strip 106. To contribute to this operation, two notches marginal 108
are provided in the bag. Other means allowing the customer to open the base without difficulty can be provided: for example, removable tabs, tear cords or tear strips.
The marginal weld which extends towards the bottom of the sachet is offset inwards at two shoulders A and B, so that the hole provided at the base is in substance of a dimension smaller than the total width of the bag. This arrangement whereby
the section presented to the liquid to be infused decreases towards
the bottom of the sachet has proved advantageous in that it gives a deeper bed of coffee and a better reproducible quality of drink. The smaller orifice also reduces the area from which splashes escape when the drink comes out of the sachet and ensures a better directed flow of liquid.
The reduction in section can be discontinuous, as shown in FIG. 8, or continuous, as shown in FIG. 9. This last figure shows a bag similar to that of FIG. 8, except that the weld extends downward along a continuous conical slope. The taper not only provides a deeper bed of coffee for brewing, but also improves the section of the orifice at the base. The narrow opening tends to form an ellipse instead of puckering and closing, as happens with larger flexible openings. The lower corners of the bag in Fig. 9 are also removed at 110. A little liquid may occasionally drip from the edges of the lower corners.
By bringing these corners together, this possible liquid is allowed to fall from a more localized area and the probability of dropping it into the container intended to receive the drink is increased. The bag of FIG. 9 is also provided with a tear-off tear strip 112 which allows the customer to open the base of the sachet without difficulty.
In sachets as shown in Figs. 1 to 8, the height of the filter sheet material 2 is greater than that of the ground coffee it contains. In some cases, it has been found that the water entering the sachet can bypass the coffee by passing through the upper parts of the filter sheet material. This can result in the impossibility of reproducing the standard quality of the beverage produced. This can be avoided by reducing the height of the filter sheet material in such a way
so that it is completely covered with coffee. A
such an arrangement is illustrated in FIG. 9: the coffee 14 extends in the bag to a height greater than that of the filter sheet material 4.
The main purpose of these sachets, as described above, is to provide an improved freshly brewed product, particularly coffee or tea, which contrasts with the production of a drink from a
water-soluble or dispersible product in water charged in advance. However, one main area in which
it is envisaged to use these sachets includes automatic drink dispensers, in particular dispensers designed to offer a choice of different drinks from a hot water tank contained in the machine. In these cases, it is unlikely that all
beverages are infusion-like products and
the materials producing the beverages could be
dispersible syrups, liquids or powders
in water or water-soluble. As an example, we can cite fruit drinks (orange, lemon, etc.),
soups, chocolate drinks. In the case of water-dispersible or water-soluble powders, it
it may be advantageous to filter the beverage before dispensing it, but this is by no means essential and may be impractical for syrups which may permeate the filter material before use.
The invention contemplates omitting the filter material from sealed beverage packages, the result being packages providing a non-beverage
infused. The filter material can be simply
omitted sachets as described, but a type of sachet particularly suitable for this use is illustrated on
Fig. 10.
As shown in Fig. 10, the bag has two welds spaced apart in the vertical assembly 120 and 122. A chamber 124, to the left of the welds 120,
122, retains the product supplying the drink (not shown). Openings at the lower end of the weld 120 and the upper end of the weld 122 allow liquid to escape from the chamber 124 from the lower right corner of the bag when opened along a line 126 The expelled liquid rises and falls in the two channels formed by the welds 120, 122 and the right marginal seal of the bag. The arrangement shown increases the dissolution or dispersion of the product in the injected liquid (in chamber 124) before it is expelled from the sachet.
It may also be advantageous to provide a temporary weld 128 at the foot of the weld 120. In the absence of a filtering material, this weld 128 retains the product providing the drink in the chamber 124. The temporary weld 128 can be a material sensitive to pressure or heat which breaks when the drink is expelled from the sachet.
Another embodiment of the bag is shown in FIG. 11. The general construction of the bag is as already described, with the exception of the nozzle 8. In place of the nozzle 8, a cylindrical element 130 made of rigid material, for example made of a suitable plastic material, is enclosed in the bag and is crossed right through by a passage
132 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. A median part of the element 130 is cut to form a median outlet orifice 134 leaving from the passage
132 and opening in the bag.
In use, the positioning element 130 is clamped between annular clamping members 136 and 138 which are part of an apparatus intended to retain the bag. A tubular needle 140, used to introduce water, pierces the walls of the bag and is placed so that a water outlet port 142 of this needle coincides with the outlet port 134 of the passage 132 of the positioner element 130. The water can in this way be introduced into the sachet in contact with the coffee 14 to produce a drink which can be evacuated from the sachet by opening it in the region 6. The element 130 can be glued positively to the bag or can be held in place, for example in a fillet weld.
According to another variant, the positioning device for the introduction of water can
be a ring of deformable elastic material fixed to the material of the sachet. The ring can be fixed inside or outside the bag and, in use, a needle, for example of the type shown in FIG. 11 to introduce water, pierces the sachet and fits tightly against the ring. The ring can be annular, in which case it has a central hole against which the needle fits tightly or it can have the shape of a complete disc which is itself pierced by the insertion needle some water. The positioning device for the introduction of water can be deformable, but not elastic, for example it can include a variety of moving blades in the manner of a camera iris shutter.
In addition, the positioning device may include a means such as a thread or a bayonet coupling for locking a water introduction injector in place.
Although a nozzle 8 as described above is preferably molded from a plastic material, such as polypropylene, this material has the disadvantage that, even when it is very thick, it does not offer as good properties of barrier or stop than those of the sheet material 2. The simple fact of providing a thin cover such as cover 228 in FIG. 12, may not be acceptable for long-term storage. There are various ways to do this. For example, a layer or a thickness of material of barrier or stop sheet (for example of the same material as material 2) can be placed across the base of the nozzle, sealing off the lower end of the channel water introduction
(230 in Fig. 12), this thickness of material to be pierced by the water injector.
Alternatively, the water introduction channel can be closed by means of a plug pressed in place which has adequate barrier or stop properties and which is pushed back (into the bag) by the water injector .
The sealed beverage packages which have so far been described specifically by way of example have the form of flexible bags. This in itself is not essential and the packaging may at least, in part, be rigid. For example, the package may include a rigid cylindrical side wall having a base and an upper wall made of flexible sheet material. A positioning device for the introduction of water is fixed to the upper wall. The base must be pierced to allow the evacuation of the drink. Alternatively, a rigid top wall can be used in combination with flexible side walls.
Nozzles for use with sealed beverage packages such as the sachets shown in Figs. 1 to 10 will now be described. The nozzles preferably have side wings (110 in Fig. 8) providing an extended surface for sealing and bonding to the sheet material 2.
Two forms of nozzle for use on sealed beverage packages are shown in Figs. 12 and 13, respectively.
In Fig. 12, which shows a molded polypropylene nozzle similar to that of FIGS. 8-10, side wings 224 are molded with recesses 226 which help reduce the sagging effect of polypropylene, which occurs after molding and as the material cools and contracts. Sagging can distort the side surfaces of the wings
224 and reduce the efficiency with which the wing surfaces seal against the air and water impermeable sheet material 2. The nozzle is also provided with a cover 228 molded on the water flow channel 230, set back in
232 so as to determine a positive stop position for the water injector of the beverage dispensing apparatus. The seal 228 detaches from the nozzle when the water injector is introduced into it.
The lip 231 of the part to be torn off has a diameter slightly smaller than that of the water injector so as to apply in leaktight manner against the latter. A similar sealing effect can be obtained for the nozzle with the injector in various other ways, for example by making the water flow channel 230 conical.
Although the upper flange 234 of the nozzle may be continuous, it may be desirable to manufacture it with a discontinuous flange, as shown in FIG. 13. Seen in plan in this last figure (in which the upper surface of the discontinuous flange is hatched so that we can better understand the drawing), there is no overlap of any of the elements, which allows the use of a simpler and less expensive molding tool.
Although the invention contemplates using sealed beverage packaging in a beverage dispenser in which some of the essential operations for obtaining a beverage if not all of them are performed automatically, this is not essential.
To obtain a drink, for example from a sachet such as that shown in FIG. 2, the apparatus can be as simple as that shown in FIG. 14. This device comprises a base 200 comprising a first arm 202 having a curved notch in which the barrel of a sachet nozzle 8 can be attached, the sachet being suspended above a cup 204 (the notch is concealed by the nozzle of Fig. 14). A second arm 206 supports a cup
208 receiving the water which ends by a flexible hose
210 to a hollow needle 212 for introducing water, this needle being supported on a third arm
214 can slide vertically.
In service, the cup 204 is placed on the base 200, the bottom of the bag is cut and the bag is attached to the arm 202. The arm 214 is lowered to allow the needle 212 to pierce the nozzle of the bag and d 'enter it. Hot water is poured into the cup 208 and the drink is collected in the cup 204. Such a device is simple enough to be used in the household.
For certain products providing beverages, such as tea leaves, the degree of air and water impermeability required for material 2 should not be as high as that necessary, for example, for ground coffee whose freshness is more sensitive to air and water. By the expression "substance substantially impermeable to air and to water", these variants are therefore understood. It is also possible to distribute the stop or barrier properties, for example between the material 2 and an outer casing.
By the expression "sealed beverage package" is meant a package which is itself sealed or a package in which the outlet for the beverage is already formed during manufacture, this package being enclosed in an airtight envelope and water, which can then be removed by the user.
CLAIMS
1.- Sealed beverage packaging made of a material substantially impermeable to air and to water containing a product intended to provide a beverage when it is brought into contact with an aqueous agent, characterized in that it comprises a positioning device manufactured separately to positively maintain a device for introducing the aqueous agent in leaktight contact with the packaging, the aqueous agent thus being able to be introduced into the packaging and
be brought into contact with the product and a drink which can be extracted from the packaging by an outlet provided in the packaging in service.
