<EMI ID=8.1>

"Improvements relating to continuous and counter-current heat exchangers with stirring for the crystallization of crystallizable suspensions in motion".
The present invention relates, in general, to agitated heat exchangers for crystallized syrups and, in particular, to a new continuous and countercurrent agitated heat exchanger for the crystallization of crystallizable suspensions in motion, this heat exchanger consisting of a vertical cylindrical tank subdivided, by means of internal horizontal pipes, into an upper section and several superimposed lower sections. These superimposed lower sections contain limitation plates comprising stages for the alternating passage of the suspension of
the inner periphery towards the center of the tank and vice versa. In addition, the heat exchanger comprises several heat exchange elements each located in each sub-section and connected to a vertical central shaft from which extend fins intended for agitating the system. This tree contains,
at its upper end, a housing containing nozzles for the admission and evacuation of a heat exchange fluid. This housing rests on two hydraulic pistons, which themselves bear on a platform located on the upper part of the tank deposition section. At the bottom of the tank, there is an outlet regulated by a valve for the treated material.
The heat exchangers commonly used for the same applications have different shapes and are equipped with heat exchange elements of different types which can be static or mobile, for example, coils of various configurations (never a spiral configuration) , hollow fins, discs and the like; in any case, a heat exchange takes place strictly against the current and, therefore, the treatment is not strictly continuous, any more than the arrangement of the exchange elements such as coils,
discs, etc., is the most effective way to

In view of the aforementioned problems, the object of the present invention is to provide a continuous and countercurrent heat exchanger with agitation.

tures of the plateaus are located alternately in the center and at the periphery; in other words, in a tray, the flow takes place in the center, in the immediately upper tray, it takes place at the periphery, in the next upper tray, again in the center and so on. The location of the trays and the flows of the suspension in each of them makes it possible to ensure a downward flow of the suspension by forcing it to pass horizontally through the interior of each sub-section. The direction of flow alternately goes from the periphery to the center
in some subsections and from the center to the periphery, in others. In the center and at the bottom of the lower sub-section, there is a valve which, when open, makes it possible to establish
a downward flow of the suspension successively through all the subsections. The invention also relates to a game.

deposit, as well as a heat exchange element located between each pair of trays (in each sub-section); these fins are made of a structural material designed to meet
the agitation conditions required in each case, each of
these heat exchange elements consisting of a continuous pipe arranged in a spiral in a horizontal plane. The set of fins also includes a vertical shaft to which are connected both the heat exchange elements and the stirring fins and comprising, at its upper end, a housing resting on two hydraulic pistons taking themselves support
on a platform arranged diametrically on the upper part of the upper or deposit section. The upward and downward movements of these hydraulic pistons are transmitted simultaneously to the set of stirring fins and to the heat exchange elements via the vertical shaft to which these fins and these elements are connected as mentioned. above.
The housing provided at the upper end of this vertical shaft contains inlet and outlet nozzles for the fluid ensuring heat exchange with the suspension, these nozzles moving with the housing of which they are a part, while they are connected to fixed nozzles by means of flexible pipes; the vertical shaft contains pipes and labyrinths ensuring the flow of the heat exchange fluid directly to the heat exchanger located in the lower sub-section, while also serving to convey this fluid, after its passage in the continuous conduct of this heat exchanger, successively in the upper heat exchangers until, its outlet by
the exhaust nozzle located in the vertical shaft housing. The labyrinths contained in the central shaft are arranged so that, in the subsections in which the suspension flows horizontally from the periphery towards the center of the heat exchangers provided in these subsections, the fluid heat exchange enters their inner spiral and is discharged through their outer spiral while, in the other subsections in which the suspension flows from the center
towards the periphery, the corresponding heat exchangers receive the heat exchange fluid in the outer spiral and discharge it through the inner spiral.
The invention is specifically characterized in that
the treatment of the crystallizable suspension takes place continuously,
against the current and with agitation, the expression "continuous heat exchange" meaning that the suspension flows without interruption from the deposition section to the flow control valve located in the center and at the bottom of the subsection lower, while the heat exchange fluid continuously enters and leaves through the nozzles arranged for this purpose in the housing; the expression "counter-current heat exchange" means that, as the suspension descends from one subsection to another, the heat exchange fluid rises from a heat exchanger
to another heat exchanger located in these subsections and, according to an even more important characteristic, in the subsections in which the suspension flows from the periphery towards the center, the heat exchange fluid flows
in the opposite direction by entering the inner spiral of the continuous pipe with a spiral movement to be evacuated by the outer spiral of the same pipe however
that, for the same reason, in the other subsections, the suspension and the heat exchange fluid flow in opposite directions; the expression "agitation" means that both the set of agitation fins and each of the heat exchangers are subjected to a continuous upward and downward movement in each of the subsections while the suspension flows horizontally and continuously in each of these.

poor heat exchange efficiency, lack of continuity
treatment and poor agitation of devices designed in
the same purpose and commonly used so far. According to the present invention, this object is fully achieved in the following manner: The efficiency of the heat exchange between the suspension and the heat exchange fluid is significantly improved by carrying out this exchange against the current which, depending on the present invention, is achieved by means of a downward flow of the suspension, taking into account that the apparatus extends horizontally in each sub-section, while the heat exchange fluid rises from the exchanger of lower heat to the upper heat exchanger, this fluid flowing horizontally in each sub-section in a direction opposite to that of the horizontal flow of the suspension.
In order to better understand the continuity of treatment,
it will be indicated that it consists of a continuous or gradual reduction or rise in temperature, as the case may be,
without any period during which the temperature remains static and without abrupt change thereof; the perfection of the continuity of the process results from the perfection with which the counter-current heat exchange takes place which itself depends on the arrangement and the distribution of the active exchange surfaces, all these conditions being obtained according to the The invention as already described for the countercurrent operation thanks to the distribution of the active exchange surfaces consisting of continuous pipes arranged in a spiral on a horizontal plane.
With regard to agitation, a heat exchanger arranged in a spiral on a horizontal plane and to which is printed a vertical upward and downward movement, subjects the

In the accompanying drawings: FIG. 1 is a cross section of the median section of the apparatus comprising all the elements according to the present invention suitably identified; Figure 2 is a horizontal cross section taken along line A-A of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a horizontal cross section taken along line B-B in Figure 1.
Reference will firstly be made to FIG. 1 which represents the vertical cylindrical body 11 subdivided into an upper deposition section 12 and a lower treatment section 13 which is in turn subdivided into subsections 16, 17 and 18 defined by interior screens 14 and 15, this view showing that
the trays 14 contain the processing stages 19 of the. suspension at the periphery, while the tray. 15 contains the stage 20 in the center, as does the bottom of the apparatus where the flow control valve 21 is located; Figure 1 also shows the
set of stirring fins 22 located on the upper or deposition section 12, as well as the heat exchange elements 23 arranged in the sub-sections 16, 17 and 18, a vertical shaft 24 comprising, at its upper end , a housing 25 resting
on hydraulic pistons 26 themselves bearing on a platform 27; it will be noted that this housing contains the heat exchange fluid intake nozzle 28, as well as the discharge nozzle 29 for the latter, these two nozzles being connected
to fixed nozzles 31 by means of flexible pipes. The vertical shaft 24 encloses labyrinths and conduits 32 and 33, the conduit 33 conveying the heat exchange fluid from the intake nozzle 28 directly into the lower heat exchange element 23 to introduce it into the inner spiral
of the latter, the heat exchange fluid being removed by
the outer spiral to go up to the heat exchange element located immediately above the first passing through
the labyrinths 32 and finally emerge in the evacuation nozzle 29, while the two hydraulic pistons 26 simultaneously transmit their upward and downward movements to the set of fins 22 and to the heat exchange elements 23 via the housing 25 and the vertical shaft 24.
FIG. 2 illustrates the body 13 common to all the sub-sections, the plate 15 with its central passage 20 for the flow of the suspension, the heat exchange element 23 in the form of a continuous pipe arranged in a spiral in a horizontal plane, as well as the vertical shaft 24 contains

that the continuous pipe is fed by its internal spiral and emptied by its external spiral.
FIG. 3 shows the plate 14 with the peripheral passage 19 for the flow of the suspension, as well as the continuous pipe 23 which is fed by the external spiral and emptied by the internal spiral. A detailed description will be given below of the process carried out strictly against the current. The suspension flows from the deposition section 12 into the peripheral duplicate passage 14 to enter the sub-section 18
where it is then forced to flow horizontally from the periphery towards the center until it reaches the flow passage 20 located in the center of the plate 15; from there, the suspension is again forced to flow horizontally in the sub-section 17, now from the center towards the periphery until it reaches the peripheral passage 19 of the next plate 14,
i after which it is again forced to flow horizontally in the sub-section 16, from the periphery towards the center until it reaches the relief valve 21 located in the center and at the bottom. As the suspension descends as described above, the heat exchange fluid rises through each of the heat exchange elements 23 and, while the suspension flows horizontally through each of the subsections from the periphery to the center in some of these and from the center to the periphery, in others, the heat exchange fluid flows from the inner spiral to the outer spiral and vice versa, so that the exchange of heat takes place strictly against the current, thereby subjecting the suspension to a strictly continuous treatment.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described above; However, those skilled in the art will understand that modifications can be made both in form and in details of the latter without departing from its spirit and its framework.
