Description

I

 <EMI ID=1.1>

 <EMI ID=2.1>

 <EMI ID=3.1>

  Method for controlling the casting operation

continuous metals.

The present invention relates to a method for controlling the continuous casting operation of metals, and more especially of steel.

The continuous casting of metals, an operation well known in itself, must, in order to be able to take place in a satisfactory manner, to verify a certain number of operational conditions, partially dependent on one another.

I

 <EMI ID = 1.1>

For example, it is important, for a given steel grade, to be able to extract the ingot at the highest possible speed, compatible both with the possibilities of the casting machine and with the quality 'of the ingot, and especially its surface quality, which itself depends on its external appearance which must be free

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

flure, segregation, etc ...

One of the known methods can preserve the upper surface of the metal contained in the ingot mold, against oxidation due to air and to collect the settling inclusions.

so much liquid steel, is to deposit on this surface

a so-called covering powder, of suitable composition, which also has the effect, by splitting, of being inserted between the ingot and the ingot mold, thus contributing to the lubrication of their interface.

Based on these considerations, the applicant,

and this is the process of the invention, has devised to control the correct operational conditions of a continuous casting, by establishing a relation between the rate of casting of the ingot and the viscosity of the appropriate covering powder.

According to the control process making the

object of the invention, a graph is drawn up giving, at a determined temperature, the viscosity considered as optimal of

covering powder, depending on the speed at which

the extraction of the ingot is envisaged, and in that this graph is used, either to determine the extraction speed to be recommended as a function of a powder whose viscosity is known at the temperature considered, or to determine the viscosity that must have a powder if the extraction speed is imposed. Knowing the viscosity found makes it possible to determine the

corresponding nature of the powder to be used.

The method described above has made it possible to show that such a graph exhibited a substantially rectilinear shape at least for extraction speeds of 0.6 m / min. at 1.1 m / min, to which correspond, at 1300 [deg.] C, des. viscosities ranging from approximately 13 poises to 3 poises.

Similar graphs could be established
(see fig.l) for powder viscosities determined in the range extending from 1200 [deg.] C to 1500 [deg.] C.

The interesting areas of use of these graphs extend to a maximum of plus or minus 25% of the viscosity values, shown in the various graphs, and preferably remain within plus or minus 10% of these same values.

According to an advantageous variant of the method, for a given casting speed, the powder is determined for which the friction forces between the ingot and the ingot mold recorded during the casting are minimum.

Thus, for the said extraction speed, the powder having, at an appropriate temperature, is known.

 <EMI ID = 3.1>

that the minimum friction between ingot and ingot mold.
