<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=15.1>

<EMI ID=21.1>
<EMI ID=22.1>

<EMI ID=27.1>
<EMI ID=29.1>

On remarquera également, qu'on peut substituer au latex de caoutchouc naturel susvisé, quel que soit le mode de mise en_oeuvre choisi n'importe quel latex, tel que le latex de polychloroprêne par exemple, susceptible de permettre, par gélification, d'obtenir un élastomère possédant les propriétés mécaniques requises par l'utilisation envisagée. ;

Continuous manufacturing process of elastomer tubes or
of plastomer from aqueous dispersions.
<EMI ID = 1.1> <EMI ID = 2.1>
are well known.
Among these processes, mention may in particular be made of those developed by the English company Revertex Limited and known under the name
<EMI ID = 3.1>
Unfortunately, these processes cannot be transformed into continuous extrusion processes, because the aqueous serum which is exuded from the wall of the tube during gelation, during the withdrawal of this gel, both from the external face and from the face. of this wall, can not be removed by washing, only on condition of allowing the washing water to easily penetrate inside the tube by the anterior end of this tube, and possibly by its posterior end after prior cutting of said tube at the outlet of the extruder, that is to say after it has passed through a so-called "hot chamber" through which
a coaxial glass tube and central core, forming a forming assembly of said elastomer tube.
In addition, the washing time of the tube fractions is generally long, although excessive washing tends to cause
the antioxidant elements which are incorporated in the starting composition, and which are necessary for obtaining flawless products.
This washing time can vary from four hours for thin tubes up to twenty-four hours for example in
the case of tubes 3 mm thick.
Moreover, in the case of thin tubes, the Revultex process provides for the elastomer tube to be passed for approximately five minutes inside a bath containing a dilute solution of formic acid or acetic acid, so as to increase compactness
and the mechanical strength of the gel constituting the wall of the tube.
Finally, before final drying, the Revultex process provides
one passage of the elastomer tube for about six minutes through
a chlorination bath, with possible circulation of a solution
<EMI ID = 4.1>
To make such a process continuous, it has already been thought to drive the extruded tube directly by a horizontal conveyor belt inside a drying tunnel, without intermediate treatments. rinsing and chlorination, by sending compressed cold air <EMI ID = 5.1> <EMI ID = 6.1> ...............
<EMI ID = 7.1>
before the horizontal path intended to bring it to said drying tunnel.
However, in such a process, the aqueous serum exuded towards the interior of the tube tends by gravity to condense at the lower part of this tube which is in contact with said drive conveyor belt, and as a result, when drying inside said tunnel; brought to a temperature sufficient to
<EMI ID = 8.1>
desirable mechanical strength, heterogeneity in the physical structure of the tube where the serum has collected, relative to the rest of the wall of that tube.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks and relates to a new process allowing, in most cases, to entrain through the interior of the tube almost all of the serum which is exuded as the process progresses. gelation and gradual withdrawal of the wall of this tube.
This serum entrainment is obtained by circulating
inside the tube open at its front part, a current of hot air capable of creating a difference in vapor pressure between the two respective faces of the wall of said tube in contact with air or possibly with a bath of wash passed through this tube.
However, such an injection of hot air requires the provision of an additional tube also passing through the supply tank of aqueous elastomer dispersion, and the chamber, called the hot chamber, through which pass two concentric tubes constituting the device. forming of the tube wall, and further requires that of a suitable thermal insulation of this additional tube from the aforementioned inner tube forming.
This additional tube descends substantially to the same level as the two forming tubes, so as to avoid too rapid gelation of the wall of the tube having the latter left the aforementioned forming device.
The current of hot air injected through this third tube then causes a gradual withdrawal of the wall
<EMI ID = 9.1>
that the serum exuded in increased quantity towards the interior of the tube is carried along continuously by this current of hot air to
<EMI ID = 10.1>
From the moment the tube is supported by a conveyor belt, it passes through a drying tunnel which ensures the evaporation of the se-

internal water flow towards the lower part of the tube housed in the vicinity of the drive conveyor belt, and therefore avoids any heterogeneity of physical structure in the wall of the tube, which can then be cut to length at will, at the exit of the tunnel drying
and vulcanization or crosslinking.
Optionally, in certain cases, provision can be made, upstream of the drying tunnel, for the tube to pass into an immersion tank.
Such an immersion tank may include in particular the use of hot water at a temperature between 30 [deg.] And 70 [deg.] C and preferably of the order of 60 [deg.] C, which has the effect of subjecting the tube, in the still wet gel state, to a significant contraction known under the name of syneresis, and which makes it possible to expurgate almost all of the serum contained in the gel, on the one hand towards the inside the tube, and on the other hand towards the outside. The serum exuded to the outside is diluted in the surrounding water, while
the serum exuded inwards passes to the vapor state as soon as
that it reaches the inner face of the tube wall.
However, as the temperature of the hot air passing inside this tube is of the order of 30 to 60 [deg.] C and the circulation of this hot air ensures a constant renewal of the evaporation surface , with creation of a continuous depression
at the interface between the gel and the current of hot air, there occurs, inside the porosities that the gel presents before its final stabilization, a movement of the serum towards the interior of the tube and a progressive drying of the gel. this tube from the inside.
It can be assumed that at the interface formed by the outer wall of the tube in contact with the water surrounding the immersion tank, the pressure of the water vapor is practically zero; and
that almost all of the serum which is exuded during the gélifica.tion is entrained in the form of water vapor by the aforementioned hot air stream, towards the anterior part of the tube.
i There comes a time, however, when this upward circulation
<EMI ID = 15.1>
The drying obtained by the current of hot air inside can be regarded as having reached its maximum efficiency then.
At this moment, the tube leaving the immersion tank passes inside said drying tunnel, where it is driven by said conveyor belt, and where the outer face of its wall finishes drying and: also reaches its final stabilized state. The
The tube is then vulcanized or crosslinked, either with hot air or by any other known technique.
The main advantage of this new technique lies in the fact that it makes it possible to dry almost completely large thicknesses of walls, on the condition of providing an adequate passage time in said immersion tank, time which depends on the thickness. from the wall.
As a variant with the use of such a hot water tank, it is also possible to use a so-called coagulation tank filled with alcohol.
at room temperature, which mixes with the aqueous elements separating the elastomer or plastomer particles, forming
an azeotrope having a boiling point of the order of 78 [deg.] C for ethyl alcohol and of the order of 64.5 [deg.] C for methyl alcohol.
Such an immersion in.l'alcohol therefore causes an increased contraction of the wall of the tube and an almost complete expulsion of the serum it contains.
In fact, when an alcohol tank is used in this way, the difference in vapor pressure between the two sides of the tube is further increased due to the lower boiling point of the water-alcohol azeotrope which forms in the porosities of the tube. gel. The use of such an alcohol tank therefore makes it possible to significantly increase the speed of drying by providing a firmer and more regular gel leading! subsequently to obtaining a more impermeable tube.

It should in fact be noted. that the manufacturing processes used in the latter case all include a grinding phase carried out in the presence of a certain number of additives of the
<EMI ID = 22.1>
and above all in the presence of a significant proportion of reinforcing and “denervation” agents of the carbon black and oil types, which significantly reduce the impermeability of the polyisobutylene chambers obtained by molding or by extrusion.
In the case of manufacturing this new industrial product, provision is made for an additional supply of artificial butyl latex, housed inside the internal tube for forming the aforementioned tubes of natural rubber, and the use of a device allowing, by spraying or scraping, to achieve a continuous internal coating of polyisobutylene of substantially constant low thickness.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, this internal coating is produced by scraping, a supply of artificial butyl latex being constituted by at least one tube kept parallel to the two forming tubes and to the central injection tube. hot air and substantially equidistant from said forming tubes and said central tube, by two plugs forming spacers, between which one can circulate cooling water, so as to prevent the passage of hot air, provided in the central part of the extruder, can cause premature destabilization of said latex. artificial butyl, The gelation of the natural latex tube is obtained in this
<EMI ID = 23.1>
say that the central hot air injection tube ends at its lower part with a hemisphere constituting a widening of said tube, or with a sphere crossed right through by this tube.
The emulsion of artificial butyl latex, the feed rate of which can be precisely regulated, leaves the aforementioned feed tube (s), to spread by gravity to the upper part of said hemisphere or of said sphere, which is provided with , itself, of a cylindrical collar forming a reservoir of butyl latex emulsion, the overflow of which pours in a thin and regular layer inside the tube of natural latex, already partially gelled, which comes out of the forming tubes, by first decreasing in diameter at its exit from said forming tubes, in order to expand again, so as to be able to pass the part
of maximum diameter of said hemisphere or of said sphere, causing by friction, a small amount of butyl latex emulsion passing between said tube of natural latex and said hemisphere or said sphere, and which descends by gravity along the upper part of that hemisphere or that sphere.
It should be noted that the butyl latex feed must be done at a higher level than that of the natural latex feed, the inner forming tube extending for this purpose above the ring manifold supplying the space between the concentric forming tubes.
In addition, in the case where cold air is injected through the central tube instead of injecting hot air, which slows down, as mentioned above, the process of gelation of the latex tube natural, it is unnecessary to provide cooling water circulation to prevent possible premature destabilization of the butyl latex inside the aforementioned supply tubes, the space between the two aforementioned plugs being able, in this case, to simply be filled with air at room temperature.

sensitized dispersion, feeding, via a pipe 2, the upper part 3 of an extruder making it possible to introduce this dispersion between two concentric tubes 4
and 5 extending inside a chamber 6 called hot chamber and comprising a circulation, according to the arrows 7, of water maintained at a temperature between 50 and 60 [deg.] C.
A little below chamber 6, the two concentric tubes 4 and 5 stop and the tube formed by gelation of the aforementioned dispersion leaves the space between said tubes 4 and
5.
This tube is shown in section at 8 at the exit of said tubes 4 and 5, and not cut at 8a until the exit of a drying tunnel 9, where as stated above, the material constituting the tube optionally undergoes crosslinking or vulcanization.
A conveyor belt 10 drives the tube 8a forward into the
<EMI ID = 27.1>
In the variants comprising an immersion tank, the tunnel
9 is preceded by such a tray 12, inside which the tube 8a is guided by rollers 13 and 14, or by equivalent means.
Depending on the case, the immersion tank is filled with hot water or traversed by a current of hot water at a temperature between 50 and 70 [deg.] C or is filled with alcohol liable to generate, in the 'thickness of the wall of the tube 8, 8a, an azeotrope promoting the evacuation of the serum through the interior of said tube.
This evacuation is obtained, as has already been specified,
by injecting hot air through a third
additional tube 15 coaxial with the two tubes 4 and 5, but thermally insulated with respect to the tube 5 by a layer of heat insulation visible at 16 in the drawing. This hot air, maintained at a temperature of the order of 30 to 60 [deg.] C, therefore only reaches the tube 8, 8a.
a level substantially equal to that of the lower part of said tubes 4 and 5. The current of hot air is propagated in the direction of
arrow 17 and emerges through the open front part of said
tube.
It should be noted that the injection of cold air which
had been recommended to allow continuous production did not allow efficient drying from the inside,; . nor to avoid harmful effects due to internal condensation <EMI ID = 28.1>
<EMI ID = 29.1>
On the other hand, it can be seen in FIG. 2, that the natural latex supply pipe is found in 2a and forms, around
of the inner forming tube 5a, a circular ring 18, from which the natural latex flows by gravity between an outer forming tube 4a and said inner forming tube, which extends upward above the feed made of natural latex, in the same way as tube 5 of FIG. 1.
The hot air injection tube corresponding to the tube 15 of this FIG. 1 is visible at 15a, and two symmetrical butyl latex supply tubes are visible at 19.
Depending on the flow rate of butyl latex that it is desired to obtain, one can use at will a supply tube, or two tubes having their axes preferably arranged in the same diametral plane.
The three tubes 15a and 19, as well as circulation tubes 20 and 21.provided to create a circulation of cooling water in the space 24 between two support plugs
22 and 23, are held by said plugs in a vertical position.
The hot air arriving through the tube 15a, leaves the hemispherical flare 25, so as to complete the gelation of the tube 8b of natural latex, and the drying of its internal coating 26 of butyl latex.
A heating collar 27 connected to an electrical power source not shown in the drawing, ensures the onset of freezing of the tube 8b.
As we said above, this tube 8b begins by shrinking, then is forced to flare again in order to be able to slide on the profile of the hemisphere 25, causing latex
butyl. descending by gravity between this hemisphere and the tube 8b, so as to generate said internal coating 26.
The properly regulated flow of butyl latex, which arrives through the supply tubes 19, first fills the annular space
28 included between the hemisphere 25 and a flange 29, until, by overflow effect, it pours out forming a 'small blade of low thickness, before reaching the small space between the hemisphere 25 and tube 8b.
It should be noted that, the thickness of this internal coating is much less than that of the natural rubber tube, .. 'and that it is for simplification that the respective thicknesses have on the drawing,

glass, a sphere crossed right through by the tube 15a and which plays the same role of deflector for the butyl latex emulsion, a collar similar to the collar 29 being provided at the upper part of this sphere, of the same way that the collar
29 planned on hemisphere 25.
It is understood that we can bring to the modes of
implementation of said manufacturing process which have just been described various changes, improvements or additions, and that it is possible to replace certain phases of this process by equivalent phases, without thereby altering the general economy of the invention.
In particular, in the case of immersion in a methyl alcohol bath, it is possible to incorporate a certain percentage
of nitrate and / or of calcium chloride, capable of further increasing the contraction of the gel at the time of this immersion.
It should also be noted that the flow rate and the pressure of the aforementioned hot air stream are chosen according to the diameter
and the thickness of the tubes to be manufactured, and possibly of
so as to prevent flattening of these tubes under the effect of the pressure of the immersion liquid.
Furthermore, in the case of the aforementioned second embodiment, it is possible to provide a supply of butyl latex carefully insulated with respect to the hot air injection tube,
but passing inside this tube to end in an emulsion spraying device, but, in this case, to obtain
a perfectly continuous coating of polyisobutylene, it is necessary to introduce stabilizers into the emulsion, and to give the spray head reciprocating movements of rotation or of longitudinal translation.
The thickness of the polyisobutylene coatings obtainable according to the invention can vary from 0.03 mm. about 0.25 mm at most of final dry product, and is preferably chosen between 0.05 mm and 0.15 mm.
This coating is vulcanized at the same time as the elastomer tube, the emulsified polymer always being added to this.

less than that of said butyl rubber chambers produced by extrusion, water vapor transmission is obtained
<EMI ID = 36.1>
approximately, ie approximately 415 times lower than that which can be obtained with said air chambers obtained by extrusion, and which is of the order of 100 g, by operating under the same humidity and temperature conditions.
It goes without saying that the ratios indicated above, for a transmission of water vapor, are maintained substantially in the case of air permeability.
It should also be noted that the use of butyl latex, rather than other substances also known for their impermeability, such as polyvinylidene chloride for example, is attributable to the fact that the stretch rates of the films of
butyl latex, are slightly higher than those of natural latex tubes, while the elongation rates of chloride films
of polyvinylidene are considerably weaker, which would cause cracking of said films during the high pressure inflation of the corresponding air chambers, and leads to preferably use in practice the artificial butyl latex sold by the company ESSO under the trade name
"Latex Enjay Butyl BP 100".
One of the advantages of this second mode of implementation lies in the fact that the butyl latex is applied with significant pressure against the inside of the natural latex tubes, which mechanically binds the coating intimately to its support. , while waiting for the molecular bridges likely to be generated possibly during vulcanization.
It will also be noted that one can substitute for the aforementioned natural rubber latex, whatever the mode of implementation chosen, any latex, such as polychloroprene latex for example, capable of making it possible, by gelation, to obtain an elastomer having the mechanical properties required by the intended use. ;
