<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
10.
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=15.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>
<EMI ID=17.1>

"Mechanism for firing a projectile, such as a grenade
<EMI ID = 1.1> The invention relates to improvements to a projectile such as a rifle grenade, comprising a firing mechanism of the type described in the main patent filed by the applicants, and in particular in its claims 1 to 9 .
In this main patent, the firing mechanism comprises a striker placed in the axis of the projectile and which protrudes in front of the latter, a detonator associated with the striker and fired by the latter when the before the grenade meets an obstacle, and a charge
<EMI ID = 2.1>
movably mounted between a safety position and an operating position allowing the charge to be fired when the grenade has been fired.
The detonator is mounted in a central bore of a rotary barrel mounted to pivot about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the grenade, the center of gravity of the barrel being eccentric with respect to its pivot axis such that it forms a compound pendulum making it possible to bring the detonator from its safety position into its operating position only under the action of an inertia force directed approximately along the axis
of the grenade in trajectory, and coming from its slowing down, which is itself due to the resistance of the air. The striker penetrates by a point at its lower part into a blind hole of the rotary barrel, this blind hole being directed radially perpendicular to the bore containing the detonator. A locking device with inertial release at the start of the grenade maintains the firing pin and
the barrel in a safety position preventing firing of the charge in the event of percussion, as long as the grenade has not traveled a certain distance from its firing point.
The invention of the first improvement patent was aimed at improving the inertial locking device, to make it absolutely safe, and to avoid the use of safety pins, the drawbacks of which are well known. In addition, according to the invention of this improvement patent, the
ir rotary barrel comes to place itself in the operating position only at the end of a constant and predetermined time interval.
In addition, the device described in this first improvement patent made it possible to eliminate the influence of the rebound phenomenon on the duration of rotation of the barrel.
between its safety position and its operating position.
The invention described in the second patent for improvement provided that the rotary barrel, in its safety position, would be pressed on the bottom of its housing cavity by means of an annular element, made of stainless metal, supported on a metal collar or bowl of this cavity, in order to avoid any risk of the barrel sticking to its seat when the grenade is stored for a certain time.
The second patent for improvement still provided for
modifications of the outer weight surrounding the striker, and of the elastically compressible element which is associated with it.
The present invention also relates to improvements to the grenade firing mechanism, which is described in particular in the main patent, as well as to the grenade itself, and which aim to improve and stabilize
<EMI ID = 3.1>
and further increase the time interval between the start of the stroke and the moment when the striker is brought into position
Operating .
For this, the invention provides a rifle grenade, comprising a firing mechanism as described in at least one of claims 1 to 9 of the main patent, characterized in that the rotary barrel is provided with an element ring finger or other suitable shape, for example
<EMI ID = 4.1>
the barrel to form the bearing surface of the latter in the safety position on the edges of the orifice or passage leading to the explosive charge of the grenade, this annular element coming to rest, in the safety position of the barrel, on a first fixed stop preventing any rotation of the barrel in the wrong direction when the latter is released by the striker.
According to the invention, this annular element therefore serves to
both as a support element for the barrel on its seat in the safety position, and as a stopper to prevent any random rotation of the barrel in a direction opposite to its normal direction of rotation, which would have a disadvantageous influence on the duration of rotation of the barrel between its safety position and its operating position.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the tail tube of the grenade, through which it comes to rest on the barrel of a rifle, comprises an outlet opening for the propellant gases, this opening being oriented so as to give a inclination having a predetermined maximum value to the grenade at the start of its trajectory.
In fact, the following drawback was observed at the start of the grenade: when the grenade, propelled by
the pressure of the gases prevailing in the barrel of the rifle, leaves the end of the barrel, it forms an annular clearance between the end of the barrel of the rifle and the end of the tail tube of the grenade. The gases escape to the outside through this
annular play irregularly, and modify in a random and absolutely indeterminate manner, the inclination of the grenade at the start of its trajectory. This phenomenon causes
an indeterminate oscillation of the grenade on its trajectory, from the start of the launch.
The invention overcomes this drawback, by giving an inclination having a maximum predetermined value.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
end can vary between a zero value and the predetermined maximum value.
The invention will be better understood, and other objects, characteristics, details and advantages thereof will emerge more clearly during the explanatory description which follows, made with reference to the appended schematic drawings given solely by way of example illustrating an embodiment of the invention and in which:
- Figure 1 is a schematic view, partially cut away, of a gun grenade according to the invention, shown <EMI ID = 6.1> - Figure 2 is an axial sectional view of the head of the grenade, showing the firing pin and rotating barrel in their safety positions; <EMI ID = 7.1> of the pomegranate, made in a perpendicular section plane
in the sectional plane of FIG. 2, and showing the state of the inertial locking device at the start of the blow; and
- Figure 4 is an axial sectional view of the head of the grenade, in the same sectional plane as Figure 2, showing the detonator and the striker in their operating positions.
<EMI ID = 8.1>
the grenade at the precise moment - it will leave the end
barrel 1 of the rifle. This grenade essentially comprises a head 2, at the top of which the end 3 of the firing pin protrudes, a bulge 4 in which the explosive charge is housed, and a tail tube 5 provided at its lower end with a tail 6. To fire the grenade,
<EMI ID = 9.1>
bullet to shoot the grenade. The combustion gases from this cartridge form the propellant gases of the grenade, and
<EMI ID = 10.1>
grenade forward.
The present invention provides for forming a cutout 7, for example semi-circular, at the lower part of the tail tube 5, so as to form by this cut -out an opening
<EMI ID = 11.1>
by arrow 8. This preferential release of the propellant gases when the grenade leaves the end of the barrel 1 of the rifle, results in a push on the lower end of the grenade, in the direction indicated by the arrow 9 The grenade will then take, at the start of its trajectory, the inclination represented schematically by the center line
10.
<EMI ID = 12.1>
felt by the line 10, any random oscillation of the grenade at the start of its trajectory is avoided, as happened in the prior art.
We will note. that the axis line 10 represents the maximum inclination that the grenade can take in relation to the axis
the start of 'its theoretical trajectory, materialized by the longitudinal axis 11 of the grenade, and that in practice, at the start of the shot, the grenade will take any inclination which will be between the inclination of axis 11 and that of axis 10.
This starting pulse, which is communicated to the grenade by the preferential exit of the propellant gases through the cutout 7, has an impact on the behavior of the rotating barrel. Another object of the present invention is to control the influence of this starting pulse on the behavior of this rotating barrel, and to ensure that this influence cannot modify the constant and predetermined duration of rotation of the barrel when it passes from his position
safety device in its operating position.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are axial sectional views of the head 2 of the grenade, showing the firing pin, the barrel, and the locking device with inertial unlocking.
In the description which follows, for the designation of the same elements as those described in the main patent and the first two improvement patents, the same references increased by three hundreds, two hundreds and a hundred respectively will be used.
The head fuse 2 of the grenade comprises an axial striker 301, which protrudes from the front part 302 of the grenade, and which is mounted to slide longitudinally inside this part 302. The detonator 303, housed in the diametral bore of a rotating barrel 305, will be placed between the point 334 of the lower part of the firing pin and the load 304 of the grenade. The barrel 305 is rotatably mounted around an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of: the grenade, by means of two very thin pivots 306, diametrically opposed, formed by two fine points protruding from the surface of the barrel, and housed in two diametrically opposed longitudinal notches 307 of a part
fixed t 330 of the grenade body, which also features
a passage 310 leading to the explosive charge 304. The notches 307 of the part 330 are normally closed to
their upper part by a shoulder of a fixed part
331 of the head rocket. It will be noted that the parts 302, 330, and 331 of the head of the grenade are mounted press-fitted on each other, as shown in the drawings.
The firing pin locking device in its position
safety comprises a first weight 315 housed inside the firing pin, being movable in sliding movement inside the latter, between a first front position defined by the plug 335 of the firing pin, and a rear position defined by the bottom striker. A return spring
316 is placed between the weight 315 and the bottom of the striker, and pushes this weight towards the stopper 335.
A second weight 341 is placed around the striker 301, inside the part 302, and has substantially
the shape of a ring of low height and very low weight. An elastically compressible element 322 formed by a sealing O-ring, is placed between the weight 341 and
an internal upper shoulder 319 of the part 302. This annular seal, with circular section, does not play the role of a compression spring, but only that of an elastically compressible part whose normal state is shown in Figures 3 and 4.
A sleeve 317 is placed under the second weight 341, resting on the upper part of the part 331, and is intended to limit the downward movement of this weight
341, as seen in figure 3.
In its tubular wall, the striker 301 comprises at least two slots 324, for example diametrically opposed, which are intended to receive locking balls 325.

sant from the outside to the inside of the striker 301.
The cylinder 305 is provided, opposite the blind hole
312 into which penetrates the tip 334 of the striker, of an element 308, for example annular, or which may have another suitable shape, which is mounted in a turning of the barrel 305 and which is made of heavy metal, advantageously of stainless metal. This ring 308 protrudes on the substantially spherical surface of the barrel, and comes to rest,
by its chamfered outer edge, on the bottom of the cavity 309 containing the barrel, when the latter is
in its safety position shown in figures 2
and 3.
The ring 308 contributes to unbalance the barrel, which thus forms a compound pendulum having its center of gravity eccentric with respect to its axis of rotation.
On the other hand, the ring 308 cooperates, in the safety position of the barrel, with a stop 300 from the bottom of the cavity
309, this stop 300 being for example constituted by an added part inserted into a bore of the part 330.
The role of this stop 300 is to prevent any rotation of the barrel 305 in the wrong direction, when the latter is released by the striker 301. In particular, the location
of the stop 300 is not arbitrary, and must be opposite, with respect to the longitudinal axis 11 of the grenade, to the cutout 7 formed in the end of the tail tube 5. Indeed,
we saw previously that the preferential exit of gases
propulsion by this cutout 7 resulted in a lateral impulse exerted; on the grenade and shown schematically by arrow 9, which tended to modify the inclination of the grenade at the start of its trajectory. When it is released by the firing pin, the rotary barrel 305 has exactly the same angular speed as the grenade, and when the lateral impulse shown schematically by the arrow 9 ceases, the rotating barrel, released by the firing pin, tends to rotate in the same way. This will therefore promote or, on the contrary, thwart its normal rotation, causing it to pass from its safety position to its operating position, and it is important to eliminate this imprecision.
This is precisely the role of the stop
300, which will be placed, relative to the longitudinal axis 11 of the grenade, opposite the cutout 7, in order to prevent any rotation of the barrel 305 in the direction opposite to its normal direction of rotation, and that at moment when the lateral impulse 9 disappears.
It is therefore understood that the cutout 7 at the end of the tail tube 5 and the presence of the stop 300 make it possible to give the grenade, at the start of its trajectory, an additional inclination of predetermined maximum value, and on the other hand d '' increase the precision of the duration of rotation of the barrel between its safety position and its operating position.
The invention further provides means for increasing the time interval between the start of the grenade and the moment when the striker releases the barrel 305 and then allows its rotation from its safety position to
its operating position.
It has in fact been observed that the lower part of the striker 301, which is guided in an axial bore 350 of the part 331, plays in this bore the role of a piston when it passes from its safety position to its operating position. . The invention therefore provides for closing the cavity 309 containing the barrel 305 in a substantially sealed manner, on the one hand by mounting the striker 301 with a small sliding play in the bore 350, and on the other hand by closing with a thin wall 351 the upper end of the passage 310 leading to the load 304. This thin wall will be punctured or destroyed.

Detonator 303. Advantageously, the cavity 309, which is thus separated from the charge 304, can be filled with the other cavities with a neutral and dry gas when the grenade head is assembled, which no longer makes it essential use of stainless metals.
It is understood that the striker, when it passes from its safety position shown in Figures 2 and 3, in its operating position shown in Figure 4, tends to establish a partial vacuum in the cavity 309, which slows down its movement. . The weak sliding play of this firing pin
301 in the bore 350 can form calibrated orifices for the air inlet in the cavity 309, so that the movement of the striker 301 will not however be too slowed down, and that the striker will come to its extreme forward position of the figure 4.
This movement of the striker must not be accelerated
<1> by the movement of the inner weight 315 when the latter is pushed by its return spring 316. For this, the invention recommends a special shape of the weights 315 and 341, as well as a particular shape of the slots
324 ball housing 325.
According to the invention, the internal weight 315 comprises a lower cylindrical skirt 352 of great length, having a diameter substantially equal to or slightly less than
<EMI ID = 15.1>
The interior surface of the second mallet 341 comprises an upper cylindrical portion 354, a lower cylindrical skirt 355 of greater diameter, and an inclined wall 356 connecting the cylindrical portion 354 to the skirt 355. The interior diameter of this skirt 355 is equal.
<EMI ID = 16.1>
te 315, increased by twice the diameter of the balls 325.
In the safety position shown in Figure 2,
the weight 315 is pushed into abutment on the plug 335 of the striker by its spring 316, its skirt 352 maintains the balls 325 engaged in the slots 324, and protruding outside the striker 301. These balls 325 are held in place by the inclined interior wall 356 of the second weight 341, which is itself supported on the thoric seal 322 by deforming the latter.
Finally, it will be noted that the striker 301 is provided with a return spring 360, which is mounted between the upper part of the part 331 and a stop 361 of the striker. The upper end of the striker slides in the cylindrical hole
of the upper part of the part 302. In the safety position, the return spring 360 of the striker is compressed, as shown in Figure 2.
At the start of the grenade, the acceleration exerted
on this one causes the descent of the first weight
315 to the bottom of the striker, and the compression of the return spring 316. When the skirt 352 of the masselotte 315 is passed below the slots 324 of the striker, as shown in Figure 3, the balls 325 are pushed by the inclined wall 356 of the second weight 341 (the O-ring 322
<EMI ID = 17.1>
and the frustoconical shape of the slots 324 guides the balls
325 towards the inside of the striker, until these balls come to rest on the upper cylindrical part 353
of the flyweight 315. The cylindrical part 354 of the second flyweight 341 is then located substantially opposite the slots 324, and prevents the balls 325 from returning to the outside. The weight 315 is thus blocked at the bottom of the striker, its return spring 316 remaining compressed.
At the end of the acceleration, the striker 301, pushed
by its return spring 360, tends to extract itself from the bore'350, creating a partial vacuum in the cavity 309 containing the barrel 305. The annular play for mounting the striker in the bore 350 makes it possible to slow down the movement of the striker forwards, without, however, upsetting it too much.
The striker thus arrives in its operating position, shown in FIG. 4, the weight 315 remaining wedged at the bottom of the striker by the balls 325 engaged in the slots 324 and against the upper cylindrical part.
353 of reduced diameter of this first weight.
It will be noted that the weight 315 is crossed by an axial bore 370, which allows the weight to descend to the bottom of the striker without being hampered by compression of the air between this weight and the bottom of the striker.
Likewise, so that the depression of the striker, when
the firing of the grenade, is not hampered by the compression of air or gas in the cavity 309, it is possible to provide, in the bottom of the firing pin, a through hole 371 normally closed by a plate 372 elastically recalled in closing by the spring 316. The hole 371 and the plate 372 thus form a non-return valve.
It is understood that these new means of the invention make it possible to effectively slow down the movement of the striker from its safety position to its operating position, and this on the one hand by making it play the role of a suction piston in the cavity 309. , and on the other hand by preventing
the sudden return of the weight 315 under the effect of its return spring 316.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described and shown which has been given only by way of example. In particular, it comprises all the means constituting technical equivalents of the means described, as well as their combinations, if these are executed according to its spirit and implemented within the framework of the following claims.
