<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
éléments d'addition.
REVENDICATIONS

Manufacturing process of rolled steel products.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing rolled steel products, applicable both to reinforcing bars, to wire rod, to any type of bars of circular section or not, all products hereinafter referred to under the term " round ", that to profiles consisting either essentially of a flat iron, or of several plates joined together, the term" profiles "also encompassing laminates such as beams and even sheets.
The main qualities that users demand from rolled steel products are, among others, a
<EMI ID = 1.1>
steel used as well as, depending on the case and the use for which the product is intended, satisfactory fatigue resistance, ductility, weldability or even drawing.
To this end, the applicant has already recommended subjecting the rolled product, as it leaves the finishing stand of the rolling mill, to appropriate cooling, resulting in a composite product in which all or part of the surface layer has a martensite structure and / or self-tempered bainite.
This process takes place in three phases; the first phase, which begins as soon as possible after the product has left the last finishing stand, consists of rapid cooling, sufficiently effective so that the rate of cooling down to a certain depth under the skin is greater than the critical speed of martensitic quenching.
At the end of the first phase, the product consists of a central austenitic zone covered with a layer composed of an austenite-martensite mixture, (the percentage of martensite increasing from the center to the periphery) possibly containing bainite.
The cooling fluid used for carrying out this process is generally water, with or without customary additives, aqueous solutions of inorganic salts, etc ...; this fluid can also be a mist, obtained by
<EMI ID = 2.1>
core a gas, for example water vapor.
From a practical point of view, the desired rapid cooling of the rolled product is achieved by selecting the cooling devices and adequately adjusting the length and flow characteristics of the cooling bars.
In the second phase, the product is subjected to cooling in air. The heat exchange coefficient of this medium being very low and the thermal gradient in the section of the laminate very high, the surface zonei x the quenching is heated by conduction from the core.
The martensite formed during the first phase thus undergoes self-tempering which gives it satisfactory ductility while maintaining a high level of elastic limit.
During the second phase, the untransformed austenite of the surface layer transforms into bainite while the core remains austenitic.
The third phase takes place during the stay of the product on the cooler. It consists of a quasi-isothermal transformation of the remaining austenite. The products resulting from this transformation can be ferriteperlite or ferrite-perlite-bainite depending on the product treated and the conditions for carrying out the process.
The present invention relates to a modality of particular interest for carrying out the treatment of rolled products by martensitic and / or bainitic surface hardening followed by self-tempering, as has just been recalled; this modality is particularly applicable when the
<EMI ID = 3.1>
than niobium for example.
The approach for the manufacture of rolled steel products, object of the present invention, in which the product is subjected, as soon as it leaves the finishing stand of the rolling mill, to appropriate cooling by means of a fluid, so that the product 'a martensitic and / or bainitic quenching of the surface layer of at least a part
of the product, the unsoaked part of the product remaining at a temperature sufficient to allow, during a subsequent stay
in air, to achieve the tempering of at least part of the surface layer of martensite and / or bainite, is characterized in that, after the tempering phase and during the phase of slow decrease in temperature of the product on the cooler, the product is temporarily maintained at a temperature
<EMI ID = 4.1>
According to the invention, the product is maintained in the temperature range indicated above for a time greater than 30 seconds and preferably between 120 seconds and 300 seconds.
<EMI ID = 5.1> method of the invention, the cooling of the quenched - tempered product is thwarted by making it stay in an enclosure possibly provided with heating means.
According to another mode of implementation of the process of the invention, the cooling of the product is counteracted by causing it to travel through an induction heating device.
The process according to the invention generally makes it possible to further improve the mechanical properties of the products subjected to the quenching and self-tempering treatment at the outlet of the rolling mill; in the particular case where we have
<EMI ID = 6.1>
addition elements.
