"Vehicle transmission".
It is recognized that low-floor buses
offer many advantages in all respects over
to those whose higher floor requires the presence of steps and / or ramps which constitute a contraindication to a rational operation of these vehicles in urban service, both because of the risk of accidents and loss of
time to boarding.
The lowered floor arrangement lowers the center of gravity and facilitates loading, which can also offer great advantages for other types of vehicles and in particular for upholsterers and certain delivery vehicles.
The use, in order to lower the floor,
of a front-wheel drive vehicle, the engine and auxiliaries of which are arranged at the front, reveals numerous problems and has drawbacks which make this solution unattractive if not impossible in urban service. This is particularly so
that the turning radius of a front-wheel drive adversely affects handling.
Using rear-wheel drive, the power unit
and the auxiliaries being placed either between the axles or all
at the rear, has the disadvantage of reducing the useful surface
loading in unacceptable proportions.
The object of the invention is to propose a solution which does not eliminate any of the advantages of the conventional installation of the
engine-gearbox and auxiliaries at the front with transmission of power to the rear wheels, without compromising the low construction of the vehicle floor.
To this end, the engine group - differential gearbox, located at the front of the vehicle, is connected to each of the driving wheels or to each pair of driving wheels, located at the rear of the vehicle, by a transmission shaft , each of these shafts, lowered both relative to the axis of the driving wheels, and relative to the output axis of the gearbox being driven by the aforesaid differential.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given below of a vehicle transmission according to the invention.

does not limit the invention. Reference notations relate to the attached figures.
Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of the transmission according to the invention. Figure 2 is a schematic side view of the same transmission.
In the vehicle equipped with a transmission according to the invention, the engine 1 and its gearbox 2 can be arranged in the axis of the vehicle, parallel to the latter, or be arranged at an angle. In the latter case, the output shaft 3 of the gearbox is joined by a universal joint 4 to the input shaft
5 of a differential 6 equipped with gear trains 7 with a view to increasing the speed to the two output shafts 8. The latter, themselves connected by universal joints 9 to the shafts 10, which constitute their extensions, are therefore arranged significantly lower than the input shaft 5. The distance between the planes of the input and output shafts is chosen such that it in fact determines the amount of lowering of the transmission shafts 10 and. of the floor 11 of the vehicle.
In practice, the diameter of the transmission shafts 10
has been reduced to reduce the bulk as much as possible. This was made possible by the concept of multiple high speed driveshafts. The transmission shafts 10 ultimately drive by cardan shafts 12, the input shafts 13 of two bevel pairs 14 followed by speed reducing gear trains 15 driving the two semi-axles 16 of the driving wheels 17. The bevel pairs 14 and the speed reduction gear trains 15 also make it possible to raise the semi-axes 16.
FIG. 2 shows the extent of the possible lowering of the transmission shafts 10 ,. allowing the construction of a
