<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=3.1>
Comme il est clairement illustré dans le dessin, la bicyclette est chargée retournée, de sorte que le guidon soit engagé par les pinces 13 et la selle par la coquille 18;

(fig. 4).
<EMI ID=9.1>
En observant les fig. 7 à 9 on remarque que le pied 14
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>

II A restraint device which can be applied to the luggage carriers of motor vehicles, for the transport of bicycles. "
The present invention relates to a restraint device for transporting bicycles on motor vehicles, particularly a device that can be applied to luggage racks of motor vehicles, either of the type with a loading plane consisting of a series of parallel bars, or of the
<EMI ID = 1.1>
used for the transport of barges and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a device that is simple in terms of structure, but capable of securely retaining a bicycle, and at the same time of facilitating loading and unloading operations.
According to the invention, these goals and others which will result from the following detailed description are achieved, by the fact that the device comprises a transverse arm provided with a vice for assembly to one of the bars of the luggage carrier plane, as well as two end clamps, each formed by a fixed fork seat and by a jaw provided
a locking lever for clamping the handlebars of the loaded bicycle returned with the saddle housed in a retaining shell provided with a cooperating strap; the shell also being fixed to the structure of the luggage rack.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, each end of the transverse arm is shaped into an open cylindrical seat containing a pair of sliding studs with a conjugated cylindrical profile, delimiting a prismatic housing for the foot of the fork of the relative clamp. The latter is fixed in its seat by means of pegs passing through eyelets provided in the seat, so that it is able to rotate around axes orthogonal between them, in order to adapt .. the inclination of the fork of the clamp to the different types of handlebars.
In order to achieve greater transpcrt security, also to prevent the possible theft of the bicycle while the vehicle is parked, at least one of the clamps of a device for locking the relative lever has been provided. Said device advantageously consists of a lock provided with a rotating finger which, by rotating the key, is brought into a locking position, in which it interferes by means of a wing of the locking lever to prevent its pivoting.
Other features and benefits will result from

appended, given by way of non-limiting example, in which:
- Fig.1 is a perspective view of the device as a whole, illustrating the transport position of a bicycle on a luggage rack of the conventional type;
- Fig.2 is a section on an enlarged scale along the line II-II of fig.l, particularly illustrating the gripper and the clamping greyhound, such as mounted on the two ends of the transverse arm;
- fig. 3 is a perspective view similar to FIG. 1, but illustrating a different way of using the device;
- fig. 4 is a perspective view of the assembly of the fork of a clamp at the end of the transverse arm according to a variant de'l'invention;

- fig. 8 is a view of the clamp, but rotated 90 [deg.];
and
- Fig.9 is a top down plan view of Fig.7.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 indicates the transverse arm able to retain the handlebars M of the bicycle B. The arm
10 is provided with a central vice 11 with pressure screw 12, allowing its locking on a cross member of a luggage rack 1?
of the type which can be applied to the roof of a motor vehicle.
The cross member 10 is also provided at its ends with
two clamps 13, each formed by a fixed fork seat
14, rigidly assembled to the cross member. 10, as well as an oscillating jaw 15, provided at its end with a locking lever 16 for clamping the handlebars.
The lever 16 is eccentrically articulated at the end
of the corresponding clamp 15 and, by means of its molded part 17
in cam, it engages a corresponding profile in undercut
of the fork 14; the provision being so planned that
the rotation of the lever 16 produces, by the engagement of the molded surface 17, a pull on the clamp 15 which consequently performs the clamping.
Note that the position of pivot 16a of the lever must be chosen so that the closing configuration is stable, which is obtained by making the oscillation of the lever
such as to force the lever to exceed the dead point of its oscillation.
The fixed seat of each clamp will be advantageously doubled
<EMI ID = 3.1>
any damage to the handlebars.
The device is completed by a retaining shell
18, advantageously of plastic material, in which the saddle of the bicycle is housed; the shell being provided with a strap for locking the saddle.
As is clearly shown in the drawing, the loaded bicycle is turned upside down, so that the handlebars are engaged by the clamps 13 and the saddle by the shell 18;
after that the blocking is provided by operating the levers
16 of the pliers and tightening the shell retaining strap. This is also provided with a clamp for attaching to the cross member of the luggage rack. However, since the distance between the cross members of the luggage rack may be other than that between the saddle and the handlebars of the bicycle, the device is advantageously provided with a longitudinal rod-19 which will be blocked by the vice.
11 and by a second similar vice, not shown, cooperating

support, with the possibility of longitudinal adjustment, the shell
18 for seat retention *
Fig. 3 illustrates another form of use of the device,
<EMI ID = 5.1>
<EMI ID = 6.1>
6, each end of the transverse arm 10 has a seat
-cylindrical open 27, formed by two juxtaposed fins 28-28 ^, <EMI ID = 7.1>
housing sliding studs 29-29 to prof il; conjugated. The profile of said studs has a circular segment and they in turn define a prismatic housing for the foot 30 of the fork 14. The foot consists of angled appendages 31-31, juxtaposed with respect to the flat surfaces of the studs 29-29 . In addition, the appendages of the foot and the studs are provided with
<EMI ID = 8.1>
32-32 joint passing through eyelets 33 of the fins
28-28; the pivots being formed by bolts engaged in a corresponding thread of the hole of the appendages 31-31.
The arrangement just described is such that
the fork 14 of the clamp can rotate around axes orthogonal to each other, more precisely author of the axis has pivots
32-32, as well as around a b axis perpendicular to the previous one
(fig. 4). The rotation around the axis b is possible thanks to the displacement of the pivots 32-32 in the eyelets 33.
The rotations around the axes a-b can be combined differently, so as to make it possible to orient the fork 14 of the clamp perpendicular to the axis of the handlebar in the clamping point. Once the adjustment has been completed, the clamp is fixed in position by tightening the pivot bolts 32-32.
<EMI ID = 9.1>
By observing fig. 7 to 9 we notice that foot 14

Position 44 is the blocking position and, as well as

land by an angled fin 45, carried by an appendage
46 integral with the eccentric lever 16, so that the opening rotation of the lever (counterclockwise, is prevented. On the other hand, position 44 is that of unlocking and since the finger is external by relative to the trajectory of the fin 45, in said position the lever
16 can be turned so as to allow the opening of the jaw 15.
Naturally, being of course the principle of the invention, the details of execution and the embodiments may be amply varied from the description.
and the drawings, given by way of nonlimiting example, without departing from the scope of the invention for this.
