<EMI ID=1.1> positif de commande suivant l'invention ;

(a) commander le gain du. radar à l'aide d'une roue moletée 3, dont la rotation agit sur un potentiomètre ;
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>

<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

The present invention relates to ergonomic control devices.
There are a number of control cases, for example that of an aircraft distance calculator radar, which requires a great deal of care and attention from a human operator and where a number of functions. It is desirable that the operator's movements be as natural and as little tiring as possible, taking into account the possibilities
movement of the human body and in particular the arm,
hand and fingers.
According to the present invention, there is provided an ergonomic control device comprising a lever capable of performing a pivoting movement and an adjustment head carried at one end of the lever, in order to effect a pivoting movement relative to the lever, this adjustment head being shaped and sized to be conveniently received by the cupped, cross-sectional palm of a human hand to allow such movements of the adjustment head
or of the adjustment head and the lever under the action of the palm substantially without the fingers having to exert effort, this adjustment head also being shaped to present
resting points in which the fingers can rest while the palm of the hand surrounds the apparatus to operate it, and comprising an actuating element which can be activated by the action of a finger on the adjustment head, near a rest position of the finger, to ensure the operation by the corresponding finger, several functions can thus be performed by the device.
We will now describe by way of example only one

lemetry. This device is intended to be operated with the left hand, and for a particular form of radar, it is used for the following functions:
1) The pivoting movement of lever 1 is used to control the movement of the mobile mark of the radar (command of the distance cursor) by actuating a potentiometer.
2) The pivoting movement of the adjustment head 2 is used to control the azimuth displacement of the movable mark (azimuth cursor control) by actuating a potentiometer.
3) The thumb of the operator's left hand is used to:
(a) control the gain of. radar using a knurled wheel 3, the rotation of which acts on a potentiometer;
(b) move the self-centering toggle switch, the upward movement of which controls the oscillation of the moving mark (range cursor oscillation), and the downward movement of which gives the signal to resume the search.
4) The index is used to control the tilt of the antenna
radar, by rotation of the knurled wheel 5 which actuates a potentiometer.
5) The middle finger is used to control a change of the distance scale, by repeatedly pressing a push button 6.
6) The third finger is used to control the azimuthal angle of exploration by the antenna, by repeatedly pressing a push button 7.
In its installed position, the control device is located to the left of the pilot's seat, approximately
<EMI ID = 3.1>
that the adjustment head 2 is located a little above this thigh. The shape (see especially Figure 1) and dimensions of the adjusting head are chosen for proper reception by the cupped palm of the hand of a normal gloved hand. The shape, dimensions, position and orientation were chosen so that the
<EMI ID = 4.1>
in the resting state, the palm being hollowed out in the shape of a cup and allowing the pivoting movement of the adjustment head or of the adjustment head and the lever without it being necessary to grip the adjustment head by the fingers which thus remain available to act on other control elements.
As can be seen in Figure 2, the pivoting movement of the lever can take place in a plane which makes an angle A of 15 [deg.] With the axis of the air vehicle. This movement (figure 3) occurs by rotating around a pivot pin 8 which is located slightly behind the center of a slot 9 in a mounting plate 10 so that the lever can be moved rearward. from an angle B of 28 [deg.] and forward by an angle C of 37 [deg.]. The angle B was limited to 28 [deg.] Because a rearward displacement, of greater amplitude, would cause the operator's arm to take an awkward position with difficulty in maneuvering .
Referring now to Figure 4, we see that the lever 1 is tilted slightly to the vertical so
<EMI ID = 5.1>
relative to the horizontal; this is simply due to practical reasons for installing the particular device described. The adjustment head 2 can pivot in both directions with respect to its central poaition, by an angle E of 22.5 [deg.]. All the angles which have been mentioned previously have been chosen so as to allow natural and easy movements in accordance with the anatomical possibilities of movement of the left arm and of the hand.
Referring particularly to Figure 1, it can be seen that the adjustment head 2 is provided with a fin 11 over which the index and the middle finger should be located. Thus, the fin 11 serves as a reference for correctly place the hand on the adjustment head 2. The spaces or impressions 12,13,14,15 (figure 1) and 16 (figure 2) define specified support positions, respectively for the thumb, index finger, finger middle finger, the third finger and the little finger and determine the position in which the fingers should be when they have not
to execute command actions assigned to them. It will be noted that in the rest positions thus defined, the fingers do not bear on the control actuating elements, thus avoiding the possibility of false maneuvers.
The thumb which is the most agile finger can perform three control actions by acting on the knurled wheel 3 or on the trigger 4. The wheel 3 protrudes to a sufficient extent from the surface of the adjustment head and to allow operation. easy, it falls into a
<EMI ID = 6.1>
in both directions by acting on the wheel with the tip of your thumb. The trigger 4 is of the type returned by a spring action to the central position and it can be moved up or down in a direction approximately perpendicular to the axis of the thumb.
The index which also has a certain agility turns the wheel 5 in two directions, the wheel being in a plane which includes the axis of this finger. The middle finger and the third finger can press push buttons 6 and 7 respectively. The position of these buttons has been chosen so that they are actuated by middle joints of the two fingers because it has been found that 'it is easier, in practice, to do this than by operating through the top joints. In this example, the little finger is not caused to have a control action.
Referring now to Figures 1, 4 and 5, this will describe two sub-assemblies 20 and 21 which are associated with the pivoting movement of the lever 1.
The mounting plate 10 is provided with holes 22 for its mounting by means of screws, and comprises two projections or projections 23 and 24. The lever 1 is fork-shaped to form two branches 25 and 26. Referring to Figures 4
and 5, it can be seen that the projections 23 and 24 and the branches 25 and 26 are drilled along the axis 27 and that the pivot pin 8 extends through these holes and is blocked on the arm or branch 25 and on a socket flanged 29 by means of a pin 28 adapted in the holes 8a, 29a and in a hole
(not shown) of the branch 25. Sockets 31 and 30 are fitted respectively in holes of the projections 23 and
24. The socket 29 extends through the holes of the branches
25 and 26, while its flange is interposed between the projections
<EMI ID = 7.1>
of a material sold under the name "Ferodo" is placed
in a circular cutout on the inside of the projection 23.
A toothed sector 33 is interposed between the branches
25 and 26 and it is fitted above the socket 29 via a hole 34. A pin 36 passing through a hole 35 and a corresponding hole of the branch 25 bolts the sector 33 to the lever 1 making it in solidarity with that
<EMI ID = 8.1>
pivot 8 by forming resiliently compressible spring means. Finally, on the pivot pin 8 we screwed a nut 38 and a lock nut 38a. The adjustment of the position of these nuts 38 and 38a on the spindle 8 serves to adjust the compression of the washers 37 and thus controls the [pound] -4 of friction between the flange of the sleeve 29 and the washer 32; thus, the displacement of the lever 1 can be adjusted to a desired degree of smoothness and to a constant value, to an extent sufficient to prevent accidental displacements caused, for example, by vibrations.
Referring again to Figures 4 and 5, it is further seen that the sub-assembly 21 comprises a double potentiometer 40 for controlling the distance of movement of the mobile mark of the radar, the potentiometer having an actuating shaft 41. The potentiometer 40 is fixed to the journal
23 by a screw part 40a, a toothed washer 43 and a
<EMI ID = 9.1>
freely rotating pinion 45 with a plate-shaped flange
46, a friction washer 47 which is seated in and partially protrudes from the crumb-shaped flange 46, and a washer 48. A pin 42 is secured in a hole 41a of the shaft. 41 and enters a notch 48a of the washer 48. Successively, a spring 49
and a flat washer 50 are fitted on the shaft 41 and finally on the threaded end of the shaft 41, a nut 51 and a locking nut 52 have been screwed in.
In the assembled state, the sector 33 is integral with the lever 1 and cooperates with the toothed sector 45. Thus, the movement of the lever 1 corresponds to a rotation of the pinion.
45 which, through the friction washer
47 frictionally drives a washer 48 which, in turn, drives the shaft 41 through a coupling through the spindle 42 and the notch 48a. By adjusting the position of the nuts 51 and 52, it is possible to adjust the axial compression of the spring nut 49 thereby adjusting the driving force exerted on the shaft 41. The ratio between the sector 33 and the pinion 45 is such that the latter performs a rotation of 3600 for a complete displacement of 65 [deg.] Of lever 1.
On the basis of the tolerances: customary for manufacturing potentiometers, the angle of rotation of the shaft 41 can vary between 270 [deg.] And 320 [deg.] So that it is certain that the movement of the lever allows the slider arm of potentiometer 40 to perform its full travel while allowing excess displacement by sliding the washer
47, and so that a subsequent movement of the lever 1 in the opposite direction immediately gives rise to a corresponding rotation of the shaft 41.
As can be clearly seen from Figure 6, the adjustment head 2 consists of a base 60 and a
- closing shell 61. In the base 60, two subassemblies 62 and 63 have been placed, associated with the pivoting movement of the adjustment head 2.
The sub-assembly 62 (Figures 6 and 7) comprises a pivot for the adjustment head 2 and is provided with adjustable friction means for adjusting the resistance to the pivoting movement. The lever 1 is provided with a support 64 while the base 60 is equipped with two ribs 65 and 66, these three elements being drilled along the axis 67. A pin

pivot 68 extends through these holes and is locked to support 64 by means of a pin 69 received in hole 68a

friction 72. The washer 72 bears against the support 64.
Four spring washers 73 in the form of plates are received on the pivot pin 68 from the other side of the support
64 and form an axially compressible elastic means.
A threaded sleeve 74 is screwed into the hole in rib 65 and acts both as a bearing for the pivot spindle
68 and as a bearing member against the washers 73. By adjusting the position of the sleeve 74, it is possible to adjust the compression of the washers 73 and thus the degree of friction between the flange 71, the washer 72 and the support 64. Thus, the resistance to rotation of the adjusting head 2 can be changed. A threaded anchor 75 is screwed into a hole (not shown) in rib 65 and serves to lock sleeve 74 in the adjustment position.
The sub-assembly 63 (Figures 6 and 7) is used to actuate. a potentiometer 76 which controls the movement in azimuth of the mobile mark. Supports 77 and 78 are respective integral parts of lever 1 and base 60. The potentiometer 76 is screwed by its part 76a into the tro - tapped provided in the support 77 along the axis 67 and
is locked in place by means of an ankle 76b which is also screwed into a hole (not mounted) in the support 77.
A toothed sector 79 is received on the potentiometer 76 by means of a hole 79b and it is fixed to the support 77 by a screw 79c which passes through a hole 79a and screwed to the support 77. A pinion 81 is keyed on a shaft 80 to the beyond the support 88 and it is fixed by a pin 81b which is received in the holes 81a and 80a. The support 78 carries, by means of bushings 87 and 86 housed in the hole 78a, the pivot pin 82 on which is mounted on one side the sector 84e ie the other side the pinion 88. The sector 84 and the pinion 88 are fixed by a pin 82, respectively by means of a pin 83 adapted in the holes 84a and 82a and by
a pin 87 fitted into the holes 88a and 82b. When moving the adjusting head 82 by a pivoting movement, the pinion 88 which meshes with the sector 79 causes the shaft
82 rotates, which drives the sector 84, which transmits its movement to the pinion 81 and thus to the shaft 80 of the potentiometer 76. The transmission ratio is such that by the displacement of the adjustment head 2 by 45 [deg.] there is a complete rotation of the shaft 80. Adjustable stops (not shown) limit the angle of rotation of the adjustment head 2 to make it suitable for the maximum angle of rotation of the potentiometer 76 taking into account the tolerances usual manufacturing of potentiometers.
In FIG. 6, we see the envelope shell 61 which is fixed by screws which pass through the holes 61a and 61b and which are screwed into corresponding holes (not shown) of the base 60. Inside the shell 61 , we will particularly notice the knurled wheel 3 which operates the appropriate potentiometer (not shown) carried by a support
90 fixed by means of screws 91, 2; a switch 93 which is actuated by the trigger 4; a potentiometer 94 actuated by the knurled wheel 5; a support 95 fixed by means of the screws 96 and 97, which supports the switch 93 and the potentiometer 94; and the pushbuttons 6 and 7. All the electrical connections to the terminals of the aforementioned elements mounted in the shell 61 are taken together in a bundle 98 and go to a male connector 99.
Prior to the adaptation of the shell 61 to the base 60, the connector 99 is fitted to a female connector (not shown) attached to the base 60. The conductors of the female connector are assembled to those which terminate at potentiometer 76 and pass through. a channel formed longitudinally in the lever 1.
