Abstract

U. V. fluorescence from, and absorption of U. V. and I.R. radiation in, a free falling sheet of water, pref. under constant head, is measured to independently monitor contamination with heavy and light petroleum and suspended solids, so that each of these components may be limited to e.g. 100 ppm. The water pref. falls through a narrow rectangular nozzle with extended sides which enclose a stable sheet of water, not subject to machinery vibration or distortion by pitching or rolling, etc., at sea. Signals from photocell/photo multipliers are fed to a recorder/controller which may operate a recycling shunt valve or an alarm system.
