Abstract
Hot reducing gases contg. maily CO and H2 are produced by (a) subjecting a solid carbonaceous material (pref. coal, lignite or oil shale) to gasification with an oxidising gas (pref. air, O2-enriched air, pure O2 or steam); (b) deoxidising the prod. with a combustible material (e.g. coke-oven gas, CH4, natural gas, heavy fuel oil, bitumen, coal, lignite or bituminous schists); and (c) heating the resulting gas to 1700-2500 degrees C (pref. with a plasma torch, opt. after preheating by heat exchange) for injection into the hearth of the blast furnace, e.g. through the principal tuyeres or auxiliary tuyeres in the vicinity thereof.
