Abstract

Hot reducing gases contg. mainly CO and H2 are produced by (a) recovering the waste gas from the mouth of a blast furnace; (b) deoxidising the gas with a suitable combustible material; and (c) heating the product to 1700-2500 degrees C (pref. with a plasma torch, opt. after preheating by heat exchange) for injection into the hearth of the blast furnace, e.g. through the principal tuyeres or through auxiliary tuyeres in the vicinity thereof. Suitable combustible materials are coke-oven gas, CH4, natural gas, heavy fuel oil, bitumen, coal, lignite and oil shale.
