Abstract
A molten plastic (e.g. nylon) having a high dielectric constant is pref. extruded to produce a filament which is fed passed a pref. conductive nozzle (e.g. of copper) surrounded by a coil supplied with high intensity current to produce a high voltage electric field which attracts the filament towards the nozzle, and an air jet issuing from the nozzle is directed onto the filament to break it into fibres which may be collected on a porous conveyor to produce a non-woven web. The filament may pass between two air nozzles which are pivotal to allow adjustment of their position relative to the filament. The position of the filament relative to the air jet(s) can be controlled to allow accurate control over the dimensions of the fibres produced.
