Abstract

Polyester film made by melt-extrusion is coated with a (meth)acrylic primer before stretching and is then orientated by stretching in both directions. Amount of primer applied is sufficient to give a thickness of >=2.5 x 10-6 mm on the finished film. The cross-linkable coating pref. consists of a polymer or copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid or their esters which contain a hydroxy, carboxyl, amide or oxirane functional grp. It pref. also contains an ethylated amine/formaldehyde condensate. The coatings cause no loss of quality, colour or appearance when coated scrap film is re-extruded with fresh polyester. They adhere well to the polyester and to other materials applied to the coatings e.g. vinylidene chloride coatings, printing inks, magnetic coatings, sensitive diazo coatings and thin metal coatings.
