Abstract
Process comprises (a) steaming dry green beans at 220-230 degrees F., for 0.25-1 hr., to give moisture content of 16-18%, (b) pre-wetting the beans to moisture content of 41-50 wt. %, (c) countercurrently extracting caffeine by introducing fresh solvent at 120-250 degrees F. and 30-200 psig. into the first of a series of extraction columns contng. the beans, the first contng. the most nearly completely extracted fraction, and passing solvent through the series at solvent superficial velocity of 0.15-1.0 ft. min.-1 w.r.t. beans and at solvent exchange rate of 2-12 lb./lb. of beans/hr., with partial recycle of solvent in each column, (d) steam stripping residual solvent from beans in first column at 220-230 degrees F. for 1-4 hrs., and (e) removing decaffeinated product from first column.
