When washing hair with a shampoo contg. as anionic, ampholytic or nonionic surfactant (mixts. of) 10-20C (un)satd. fatty acid alkylolamides, their dimers or ethoxy derivs. with 2-5 ethyleneoxy units, the hair is pretreated with an aqs. soln. or dispersion contg. 0.1-10 wt.% of a polymer contg. multiple cationic N atoms e.g. diethylene triamine-adipic acid condensate modified with epichlorhydrin. Pretreatment replaces conventional conditioning rinse applied after the hair has been washed.
