Abstract

Petroleum coke of high sulphur content and contaminated with metals is purified and calcined to form metallurgical grade coke by (1) pre-oxidising the coke at 650-850 degrees F to increase its surface area., (2) hydrosulphurising the coke with synthesis gas at 1300 degrees F or above, and (3) demetallising the coke by contact at 275-430 degrees F and elevated pressure with the H2S-containing synthesis gas effluent from the hydrodesulphurisation step to form gaseous carbonyls of the metals, the H2S functioning as catalyst. The synthesis gas required is suitably generated by gasifying a portion of the coke with O2 and steam. The H2S- containing effluent from the desulphurisation step is pref. used to preheat the coke before the effluent is used in the carbonylation of the metal impurities.
