Abstract

A procedure to reduce the total sulfur content in Claus waste gases, where said waste gases, which in addition to hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide also contain carbonyl sulfide and/or carbon disulfide, are passed along with a gas that it contains hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide, at a temperature greater than 175ºC, on a Group VI and/or Group VIII metal catalyst, supported on an inorganic oxidized support; the waste gases thus treated are subsequently or simultaneously contacted with a solid catalyst, to convert carbonyl sulfide and/or carbon disulfide to hydrogen sulfide, and finally are contacted with an adsorbent or absorbent, to remove hydrogen sulfide of said gases.
