Abstract

A heavy oil supply hving at least 1% wt. sulphur is separated into two fractions, one having a relatively high, and the other a relatively low sulphur content. The low S-fraction is hydrodesulphurized in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. cobalt/molybdenum on alumina; desulphurized oil and H2S and recovered. The high S-fraction is burned to give SO2. The H2S and SO2 are reacted to give elemental sulphur.
