<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

BELGIAN PATENT Process and device for feeding pulp to an installation for manufacturing sheets of fibrous material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates generally to an installation for forming a sheet of a fibrous material suitable for the production of tubes and plates, and it relates in particular to a method and a device for supplying pulp to fibers. and a binder (normally cement), of the organ on which this sheet is to be formed.
Various methods and types of machines for forming a sheet of fibrous material have long been known. '
In machines with a rotating cylinder formed from a mesh, the very dilute aqueous fiber cement paste is brought into a tank in which the cylinder is partially immersed, so that most of the water is removed through the metallic mesh. of the -cylinder thus giving rise to the formation, on the outer surface of the cylinder, of a thin sheet which is deposited by adhesion on a continuous permeable web (felt) which moves in contact with the cylinder having a surface in trellis.
This web then transports the formed sheet with a view to the next operation of winding the sheet on a metal core. - - -
The main disadvantage of these mesh roller machines results from the ease with which the wire mesh tends to clog, high handling costs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
attention for the frequent replacements of this mesh, the large presence of solids suspended in the circulating water, which pass through the mesh, and the consequent obligation to use bulky separation systems.
In other types of machines, * a. cy-. suction liner on which is returned the .permeable - continuous sheet (felt) which participates in the cylinder movement, which partially immerses in the aqueous paste contained in a tank. Inside or outside the cylinder, there are provided means which limit the vacuum to the arc of the casing of the cylinder which is in contact with the continuous permeable web. The combined action of the movement of the cylinder and the suction therein results in the formation and dehydration of a continuous sheet of fibrous material on the permeable web.
In this case, there is a large volume of dough in the suction cylinder supply tank. with the disadvantage of turbulent movements in this dough as a result of the agitation which must be constantly maintained in order to avoid them. The arrival of the dough to the tank takes place through localized passages which / do not extend over the entire width of the tank and which are the cause of a further increase in the irregularity of the turbulence. In addition, the large volume of paste in the feed tank does not allow rapid emptying thereof at any stopping of the permeable web and the suction cylinder.
This fact has the serious drawback that when the permeable sheet stops, that is to say when the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
metallic mandrel for winding the fibrous layer transported by the permeable web, there is formation of an excessive and irregular deposit of fibrous material on this web, in correspondence with the area immersed in the aqueous paste, despite the cancellation of the internal vacuum of the suction cylinder. It is known that such excessive and localized irregular deposits cause serious malformations in the tubes forming on the metal mandrel.
Finally, other machines are known for forming a sheet of fibrous material, in which the not too diluted aqueous paste is poured directly onto a continuous permeable web, returned to an impermeable cylinder, by rotors arranged. to rotate in a distribution bowl.
In such a case, one has the disadvantage of a periodic irregularity of the thickness of the layer.

The main object of the invention is to create an

the latter of a sheet or layer of very uniform fibrous material, with vigorously homogenized fibers and suitably oriented in a humid environment at this time by the device on this continuous permeable sheet, without giving rise to the drawbacks and troubles which exist in the known systems and which were mentioned above.
This object is achieved by the process according to the invention which is characterized in substance by the fact that the aqueous pulp of fibers and binder is subjected to a homogenization treatment and that this pulp is brought in the form of a one-way laminar flow to be deposited on the continuous permeable web to be immediately and uniformly dehydrated therein.
The layer of fibrous material which has formed on the continuous permeable web should be subjected to a compacting and rolling action, in particular during the first phase of dehydration.
The feed device according to the invention,. which carries out this process, is characterized in substance in that it comprises a closed hollow body to which the aqueous fiber cement paste arrives via a supply duct possibly provided with a shut-off valve and in which a homogenizer is placed. and a vane distributor-mixer for the dough, the hollow body being provided, in correspondence with this distributor-mixer, with a window which opens into an ascending duct of narrow section and narrowing, of a width equal to the width of the sheet or layer to be thundered on the permeable sheet c ontinue, this.

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in the zone of transfer of the aqueous paste on the web, in which zone the web is returned to a cylinder.
With the method described above and the feeding device thus formed, many advantages are obtained. The aqueous paste introduced into the body of the dissolver undergoes a vigorous homogenization treatment through the rotating homogenizer and continuously, uninterrupted, without stopping, with a movement symmetrical with respect to the axis of the body, towards the distributor-mixer, which, with its paddles, forces the dough to perform an ordered rotational movement in the lower part of the body, so as to exit through the window in the ascending duct and flow in a uniform and continuous manner in a continuous flow. laminar flow towards the permeable sheet on which the dough is immediately fixed without recirculation and without stopping, thanks to the constricted conformation of this duct.
This particular constricted constriction of the duct for supplying the dough to the permeable web also makes it possible to rapidly lower the entire payroll level in the duct in question by means of the interruption of the supply. at the instant preceding any stoppage of the web. The serious drawbacks of supply tanks for suction cylinders of known type are thus avoided, in which the accumulation, during any stopping of the web, of excessive and irregular deposition of fibrous material on this web in correspondence with the submerged zone, In fact, in the case of the device according to the invention,
when the power supply is interrupted, there is a rapid evacuation of the constricted area of the inflow duct and thus the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
permeable web is left completely bare with no paste in contact with the web for the duration of the shutdown.
Further characteristics of the invention will emerge from the detailed description which follows with reference to the drawings attached hereto, which represent schematically and by way of example only, without limitation, some embodiments and practical application.

Rely in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings comprises a closed hollow body, indicated as a whole by 1 supported so as to be able to turn in two supports 2 and 3 fixed to the 'foundation 4.
To body 1 are fixed two end supports
5 and 6 in which are supported so as to enable them to rotate - the terminal journals 7 and 8 of a hollow rotor
9, and a housing 10 for the transmission members constituted by pulleys and belts 11. 12 and 13 which transmits the movement of a motor 14 mounted on the support 5 to the terminal journal 7 of the hollow rotor 9 .
A part of the body 1 constitutes the frame 15 of a homogenizer, the rotor 16 of which is wedged in an adjustable position on the rotor 9.
Both the frame 15 and the rotor 16 are trcnconical and carry blades 17 respectively 18, which cooperate with one another to obtain the perfect homogenization of the aqueous fiber cement paste which arrives in the frame 15 through a duct 19 into which is introduced. a stop valve 20 (see FIG. 1).
The hollow rotor 9 is provided with holes 21 for the entry of the homogenized pète coming from the homogenizer and with trcus 22 for the exit of this same dough. In addition, the rotor 9 carries longitudinal vanes 23 which cooperate with counter-vanes 24 fixed inside the body 1 to improve the homogenization of the dough and to orient and relax the fibers of this dough, which is thus obliged to perform a regular rotational movement in the hollow body 1. In correspondence with the part of the rotor 9 provided with holes 22 for the outlet of the dough and the vanes.
23, the body 1 has a window 25 through the

which dough can leave the hollow body 1 and enter an ascending duct indicated in FIG. 2 generally by 26. Laterally, this duct is delimited by two flanks 27 fixed to the body? 1 and each carrying a transverse sealing element 28, preferably of rubber.
Between these two flanks is provided a transverse wall 29 carrying an overflow outlet 30 with a tube 31 for taking up the excess paste, this overflow possibly being adjustable in height by means not shown. The bottom of the duct 26 is finally formed by a transverse wall 32 fixed between the two sides 27 and by a cylinder 33 which will be discussed below, the seal between the wall 32 and the cylinder 33 being ensured by a pad. 34 fixed to the wall and rubbing against the cylinder (see also figure 5). The lateral sealing is ensured by the elements 28 which are introduced. in annular grooves of cylinder 33 (see Figure 6).
The duct 26 has a width between the two sealing elements 28 which corresponds to the width of the sheet of fibrous material to be formed, while its section becomes reduced and constricted, as can be clearly seen in FIG. 5, the constriction or constriction being formed by the transverse wall 29 and by the cylinder 33.
Between the flanks 22, two transverse bars 35 each carrying a pad 36-
The body 1 in correspondence of the supports 2 and 3, externally carries toothed rings 37, each of these meshing with a worm 38 (see Figure 1) actuated by a handwheel 39, the worm being able to

spinning around its axis, but not being able to move along it. By actuating the two handwheels 39, it is therefore possible to rotate the body 1 in the supports 2 and 3, and with. This one, the internal device

of alienation.
To the body 11 are fixedly fixed support flanges 40 in the cylinder 33. 'In particular, these flanges 40 are journaled, by means of journals 41, levers 42 which support the end of the cylinder 33 so as to it. allow to rotate freely. Between a point
43 of each lever 42 and a point. 44 of the respective flange
40, acts an articulated tie-rod, generally indicated by
45.
As it results particularly from Figure 4, (right), the tie is formed by two sleeves or. sleeves 46 and 47 capable of telescopically penetrating one into the other and of a rod 48 fixed to one of the sleeves 46 and freely passing through the bottom of the other sleeve 47; at the end of this rod, a nut 49 is screwed which, under Inaction of a coil spring 50, acting between the two sleeves, remains applied to the bottom of the sleeve 47. The length of the tie 45 is therefore given by the position of the nut 49 on the rod 48 with the two sleeves 46 and 47 as far apart as possible from each other, as shown in Figure 4.
Compared to such a normal length, the tie rod 45 can be shortened by making the two sleeves penetrate more into each other against the action of the spring 50.
We can therefore clearly see how the cylinder 33 carried by the two levers 42 can oscillate together with these le-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
viers around the journals 41, from a normal position of holding by the springs 50 of the tie rods 45 in a position closer to the body 1. The purpose of this possibility of oscillation will be explained below.
According to a variation of the feed device described so far, the rotor 9, instead of being hollow, is made solid (see FIG. 3) and between the frame 15 of the homogenizer and the body 1 is arranged a diaphragm.
51 with an opening 52 which places the empty space between the rotor 16 and the frame 15 in communication with the gap between the rotor 91 and the body 1. the homogenized paste therefore passes through this opening 52 into the interior of the body and from there through the window 25 into the duct 26.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5, the feeding device cooperates with a machine for forming a sheet of fibrous material, with a suction cylinder and a continuous web (felt) which makes the object of another patent filed simultaneously by the applicant and tooth, only a solar description will be given below.
Such a machine is constituted in substance by a cylinder with a cylindrical grid, generally indicated by 60, supported so as to be able to rotate freely by two lateral supports 61 and placed in a tank kept under vacuum, the water of which is collected in a tank. collector 62 is sucked by a pump (not shown) through a tube 63. On the cylinder with cylindrical grid 60 is returned the continuous permeable sheet 64 which passes between the cylindrical grid and the cylinder 33 of the feed device
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
and between the latter and a cylinder 65 supported by two lateral supports 61. The cylinder 33 maintains the permeable web 64 in contact with the cylindrical grid 60 and at the same time as the cylinder 65, performs the compression of the permeable web.
These cylinders 33 and 65, as well as the cylindrical grid 60, are driven in rotation in the direction of the arrow indicated in FIG. 5 by the continuous perm4able sheet 64 which is therefore driving and which is in turn driven by another cylinder ( not shown in the drawings).

The aligner according to the invention can also be used -in a machine of the type in which the aqueous paste is poured directly onto a web.

In all the figures of the drawings, it is indicated by
90 the sheet or layer of fibrous material which forms on the permeable web or continuous felt 64.
The sodium hydroxide for carrying out the process and the operation of the aligner according to the invention will be apparent from the foregoing. A better and more uniform treatment is ensured for the aqueous paste which becomes perfectly homogenized and uniformly distributed and which is maintained in continuous movement in the body of the device avoiding deposits, stops and turbulent movements. In the tightened and narrow duct which carries the dough towards the permeable layer, the dough lies in one direction without return of circulation and without stopping, with one movement,
strip continuous and uniform over the entire width of the duct, that is to say over a width equal to that of the layer being formed. Such movement of the pulp ensures that the fibers contained therein will be well opened and extended and oriented in the direction of movement towards the continuous permeable web. The volume of the paste -contained in this constricted duct is very limited, this
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
which makes the cancellation of the impact of the paste in the zone in contact with the permeable web extremely quickly on the occasion of any stopping of the web. There is therefore no formation of a deposit of excessive thickness of material on this web.
To avoid partial reductions in the passage section in the ascending duct, due to incrusta- tions, part of the bottom of this duct can advantageously be constituted by a cylinder driven by the permeable sheet, which, by the effect by its movement in the direction of throwing back the obstacles and by friction of its surface in contact with the elastic pad of the bottom of the duct, always maintains its surface clean.
This cylinder also fulfills the function of maintaining the continuous permeable sheet adhering to the return cylinder of this sheet, thus obtaining in these places the retention of the dough, and to perform in cooperation with a

The overflow weir which can be adjustable in height further contributes to the maximum uniformity of formation of the thickness of the layer fixed to the permeable web, and therefore to maintain the greatest uniformity.

The entire feed device can be rotated around two horizontal journals so that it can be detached from the machine for the formation of a sheet of fibrous material, with the aim of facilitating the assembly of the continuous perforable web and making the operations extremely easy. handling, cleaning and inspection.
