<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
'La joint 21 et un joint 45 servent à empêcher le fluide de s'échapper du robinet autour de la tige 33 et de sa
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to valves for controlling the flow of a fluid and more particularly to a valve having a device by which, under certain conditions, the valves act to automatically shut off the flow. fluid and remain closed until they are intentionally rammed in operation,
Currently, many portable heaters designed to burn gas or liquid fuel are used in trailers,
IL ,, 3 decks, boats, etc. .. It has happened that when these stoves or heaters were accidentally overturned, while. no one was in the immediate vicinity, they were the cause of serious fires.
The object of the present invention is to provide: a valve designed particularly to be mounted on such a heating device and comprising a structural arrangement which, when the device is overturned, functions to immediately and automatically cut off the flow. fluid and will remain formed until the valve is intentionally reset by hand to allow it to function normally.
- a self-closing valve with a special compact structure, economical to manufacture and which operates for long periods of time without maintenance.
- An automatic nrrtt valve comprising an agon .. cement which acts to cut off the flow of a fluid if the flow rate of this fluid exceeds its predetermined volume.
- a valve of the type indicated, comprising an arrangement by means of which the valve cannot be returned by hand to the normal open position, unless the fuel supply of the valve or the request thereof. comes either cut.
Other advantages and characteristics of the present invention will emerge during the detailed description which will follow given with reference to the appended drawings which give, by way of explanation, but in no way limiting, several embodiments in accordance with the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
On these drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a valve according to the invention,
Figure 2 shows a variant of the structure shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a variant of the valve shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cage shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the permanent magnet and the valve seat shown in Figure 2. Figure. 6 is a view taken along line 6-6 of FIG. 3.
Referring to Figure 1, the valve comprises a body 10 having at its lower part a chamber 11 extending vertically. A valve seat 12 is disposed on a shoulder 13 formed at the upper end of the chamber 11. The body also comprises an outlet port 14 disposed above the seat 12 and which communicates via the seat of the valve. valve with chamber 11 here. The body has an inlet port 15 which communicates with chamber 11. The valve seat 12 is in the form of a washer, preferably of a plastic material, and it is held against the valve. annular shoulder 13 by a permanent magnet 17 of cylindrical shape.
The upper end of the permanent magnet 17 is in contact with its sleeve 18 disposed at the upper end of the bore of the body. The sleeve 18 has, on its outer surface, a circumferential groove 19 and a series of openings 20 which pass through its side wall in alignment with the groove 19. The groove 19 is disposed, in alignment with the sleeve. outlet 14. A seal 21 is disposed on the upper end of the sleeve 18, and engages a disc 22 which is pushed inward, or downward, against the seal 21 by a sleeve 23 screwed on. the upper end of the body bore.
A valve member 25, shown as having a spherical shape, is disposed in chamber 11 and can move.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
with a free vertical movement to come and take with the seat 13 or separate from it, in order to connect the outlet orifice 14 to the chamber 11 and to isolate it. The permanent magnet 17 operates, when the valve element 25 is brought near the seat, so as to hold the valve element against the seat and thereby isolate the chamber 11 from the outlet port 14.
The valve is attached to a device to which a fluid fuel is supplied, such as for example a furnace. Normally the valve is arranged vertically. If the furnace is overturned, the valve element 25 moves under the action of gravity in the chamber. 11 towards the seat 12, and when it arrives near the seat, it is subject to the effective influence of the permanent magnet 17, the latter rigidly holding the ball against the seat, day ceasing all other flow. flow of fluid through the valve.
The inlet 15 communicates with the chamber 11 by a series of channels 27. If the furnace or any other device is overturned, which brings the valve to the horizontal position and the element 25 is engaged. valve with the seat 12, the valve element can, when the device and the valve are returned to the vertical position, be restored or brought back to the lower wall of the chamber 11. A jbint, or O-ring 29, is of preferably disposed on the lower wall of chamber 11 to support the valve element when the latter is in normal operation.
A recovery means is used to move the ball 25 by hand to separate it from the seat 12 and take it out of the effective field of influence of the permanent magnet 17. This recovery mechanism shown in FIG. , is constituted by a rod 33, mounted so as to slide on the disc 22 and having an enlarged head 35 slidable at the upper end of the sleeve 23. A compression / helical spring 37 is mounted on the rod 33 and it is interposed between the head 35 and the disc 22 so as to push the rod 33 in an elastic manner towards the outside of the body to the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 1.
The head; 35 of the rod 33 is provided with a cylindrical element 39 whose dimensions allow it to slide over the upper part of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sleeve 23 and which serves as a button for pushing rod 33 inward in a convenient manner. Rod 33 extends downwardly through permanent magnet 17 and terminates adjacent to seat 12. When rod 33 is pushed down, it engages valve member 25 and moves. the latter downwards, separating it from the seat 12 ..
The distance over which the rod 33 moves is such that it moves the ball member 25 of the valve downward away from the seat 12 and out of the effective influence of the permanent magnet 17. , as seen by the dotted outline indicated at 40.
It should be observed, with reference to Figure 1, that the inlet channels 27 communicate with the chamber 11 between its ends in a region which is below the position occupied by the element 25 of the valve when 'it is moved downwards by the recovery rod 33. The diameter of the ball 25 and the diameter of the bore of the cylindrical chamber 11 are such that there is only a slight clearance between the element. of the faucet and the chamber wall. When the fluid flows at normal volume through the valve, from the inlet channels 27 to the outlet port 14, this flow of fluid holds the valve member against the end of the rod. 33 and, when the rod moves upwards, it brings the element 25 of the valve back into contact with the seat 12.
Therefore, the fluid cannot be made to flow again through the valve simply by pushing the recovery rod 33 inwards, but the demand or the flow of the fluid to the inlet port 15 must be cut off. to allow the valve element 25 to drop to the bottom of the chamber, as indicated in dotted lines at 43,, Figure 1. In other words, to restore the flow of fluid through the valve after the device on which it is mounted has been overturned, the device must be straightened out, cut off the demand or supply of the fluid to the valve. .and push the rod 33 inwards. The fluid supply can then be restored to allow normal operation.
'The gasket 21 and a gasket 45 serve to prevent fluid from escaping from the valve around the stem 33 and its
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
head 35, when the valve is in normal operation.
In the variant shown in FIG. 3, the body 10 of the valve comprises a channel which extends axially over its entire length. The lower end of the channel is internally threaded, as seen at 53, and it is in this end that the conduit which makes the fluid flow to the tap, is screwed. Above the threaded end 53, the body has a circular series of axially extending grooves 55 which form grooves 57 which at their lower ends extend inwardly. forming shoulders 58.
This arrangement of splines forms the chamber 11 for receiving the spherical member 25 of the valve. An O-ring 60 is disposed on the shoulders 58 to support the ball 25 of the valve when in the normal position.
The peripheral part of the seat 12 is disposed on an annular shoulder 61 formed the upper end of the splined chamber 11. The permanent magnet 17 is mounted in the bore of the body and is disposed on the seat 12 of the valve.
The cage or sleeve 18 is disposed on the upper end of the magnet 17 ot comprises the channels 20 which communicate with the outlet orifice 63. The upper part of the valve, including the recovery rod 33, has the same structural arrangement as that shown in Figure 1.
The purpose of the fluted chamber 11 is to allow a greater flow of fluid through the valve, for example when relatively thick liquid fuel is used.
In FIG. 2, the body 10 of the tap has at its upper end an externally threaded rod 70, which can be used to fix the tap on a stove, or any other device. In this arrangement, the chamber 11 which receives the valve element is in the form of a sleeve 71 mounted on the body. This sleeve has a cylindrical shape and comprises an intermediate part 72 whose diameter is smaller than that of the upper part 73, and a cheek 74 formed at its lower end, see FIG. 4.
The permanent magnet 17 is disposed at the upper end of the sleeve 71 which has a countersink so as to form a shoulder on which the lower end of the magnet is disposed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In this arrangement, the valve seat is in the form of a tubular element 75. mounted inside the magnet 17 and comprising at its upper end a cheek 77 which extends laterally. In figure 5, the seat 75 is shown in position inside the magnet 17 which, in turn, is arranged inside the sleeve 71, as seen in figure 2. A seal 78 is disposed at the upper end of the magnet sleeve assembly. A plug 80 is screwed at the lower end of the body 10 against the sleeve 71, which brings the magnet and the seat assembly against the washer 78 which, in turn, is moved upwardly. bring against the upper parai of the body bore.
The body has a channel 83 which extends upward from the washer 78, in line with the opening formed at its center, and which communicates with the outlet port 84.
The intermediate portion 72 of reduced dimensions of the sleeve 71 comprises one or more openings 85 which communicate with the chamber 11 which receives the valve element.
These openings are arranged at the top of the chamber 11, above the valve element 25 when it rests on the stopper 80. The sleeve 71 also has additional openings 89 which are arranged at the end. of the sleeve, below the horizontal diametral plane of the ball 25 of the tap, when it rests on the sleeve 80 at the bottom of the chamber, as shown. see it in dotted lines in figure 2.
The openings 85, 89 are inlet ports serving to transmit the fluid from the inlet port 87 to the chamber 11,
The openings 85 have dimensions allowing a flow of fluid of predetermined value from the inlet port 87 which, with the very small quantity of fluid which flows from the openings 89 upwards, around the ball 25. valve, is sufficient to provide a volume of fluid allowing normal operation of the heater or any other device to which the valve is connected.
The body 10 comprises a lateral hub 90 internally threaded and which is intended to receive an element 91 comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>

around the reset pole 33, and the inner end of: this is provided with a control button 96, the rod being pushed outwards by a spring of

helical compression 95.
The a {; cl1ccrH <- :. nt is such that when In bill (, of the valve is held against the lower end of the seat 75 by the magnet 17, as seen in solid lines in Figure 2, all inward movement of the rod 33 causes the ball to move downward, separating it from the seat at one distance.

sufficient force to cause it to come out of the effective field of influence of the permanent magnet 17, the ball then falling on the plug 80. The clearance between the ball 25 and the side wall of the chamber 11 is such that if the fluid flow through the valve is greater than that.

When the flow of fluidc at an abnormally high volume, the valve automatically shuts off the flow of fluid.
It can be seen that in all the arrangements described, if the valve is moved to a horizontal position or if it is brought to this position, the fuel supply is cut off and is not restored before the valve is repaired. by moving the ball 25 of the tap to

even when left upright, closes if there is an abnormal flow of fluid through it.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 2, it is not necessary for the valve to be inverted and brought into a horizontal position to move the valve element 25 and bring it into the effective field of the magnet, permanent against. the valve seat, The existence of a pressure exerted by the fuel against the underside of the ball 25, via the lower orifices 89, and the small clearance which is provided between the ball and the chamber 11, have for As a result, if the valve receives a shock, the ball is moved upwards and enters the effective field of action of the permanent magnet.
This is an advantageous feature when using the valve in connection with a fuel-containing apparatus which is mounted on a vehicle, such as a caravan. In the step where the vehicle undergoes a collision, the valve remaining in vertical position, it closes.
It goes without saying that these valves can be attached directly to a fuel supply tank, such as a liquid petroleum tank which is now widely used to supply fuel to devices. both portable and fixed heaters.
It goes without saying that the present invention has been described and shown for explanatory purposes only, but in no way limiting, and that it is capable of various variants without departing from its scope.
