"BEHANDELINGSTOESTEL"

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
verzekerd is.

"TREATMENT DEVICE"
The invention relates to a photographic material processing apparatus comprising a processing liquid tray, guide elements for guiding at least one sheet of photographic material in a predetermined path through the processing liquid in the tray, and driving means to keep said photographic material at a constant. speed through the treatment device.
Devices of the type mentioned are well known in making copies according to the silver halide method, the stabilization method, the silver halide diffusion transfer method, etc. In all these methods. an image-wise exposed sheet of photosensitive material is contacted with a processing liquid for a certain time to reveal the latent image formed in a photosensitive material by the exposure.

usable or usable in some other way.
The treatment time in the mentioned devices is determined by the speed at which the blade is driven by the device.

Since the present invention mainly relates to devices in which the treatment fluid passes through

handling fluid, plus the web length between the exit of the processing fluid and the pressing through the pore rollers.
For various reasons it is desirable that the treatment time in the device can be changed. One reason is the difference in the sensitivity of a given material to the function of a particular treatment fluid. Another reason is that a device of the type described is in principle suitable for
EMI2.5
conducting different photographic copying processes, however, of course, using different treatment times.
Finally, yet another reason can be formed by temperature differences of the working fluid in the room if the temperature thereof is not thermostatically controlled or if the temperature is not controlled.

This measure has only been partially successful because, for reasons of cost, a discontinuously controllable drive system is usually used comprising only a few speeds.
EMI3.2
According to another measure, the guide points in the scale can be replaced by others that define a path of modified length for the sheet of photographic material. This measure is not very convenient in practice and moreover allows more limited control. .
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple control system that allows indoor

fluid comprising, guiding clips for guiding at least one sheet of photographic material in a predetermined path through the treatment fluid in the tray, and driving means for conveying said photographic material at a constant speed through the treatment apparatus, and wherein an overflow device is provided for level of the treating fluid flowing through a pumping device from a container containing such carbon

is pumped to the tray, to be kept constant, characterized in that the overflow device is adjustable so that the level of the liquid in the tray can be changed.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the overflow device is constituted by a vertical pipe in the shell of square or rectangular cross-section, the bottom of which communicates with said container for treatment liquid, and one wall of which is open from the top edge of the pipe. up to at least the desired minimum level of the liquid in the shell, the vertical edges of this cut-out wall being provided with rebates for the inlet of baffle plates.
Although the present invention has mainly been developed in connection with apparatus for performing the silver halide diffusion transfer process, the invention is not limited to this particular process, but basically applies. any photographic copying process in which a sheet of photographic material is treated in a processing liquid for a specified time. This treatment can include developing, fixing, etching, bleaching, stabilizing, etc.
The term "a sheet" is to be interpreted broadly in the present specification and refers to materials whose dimensions range from smaller strips to arbitrarily long web lengths.
The term "photographic material" includes supports of layers in which a latent image can be formed under the influence of light, heat and other actinic radiation, supports on which the image of another support is transferred, supports which will form a printing form to form along

an exemplary embodiment without however being limited thereto.
EMI5.2
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus for manufacturing an aluminum offset sheet by the silver halide diffusion arc process method; FIG. 2 is a schematic longitudinal section of the device; FIG. 3 is a detail view of the overflow device.
The device as shown in Figures 1 and 2 is a device for manufacturing an aluminum printing plate
EMI5.3
for use in an offset printing machine.
In the apparatus, an image-wise exposed luminous field, tinatoria, il, hereinafter referred to as the film, is treated with a processing fluid to develop the latent image and pressed against an image receiving material, hereinafter referred to as the aluminum sheet. Under the influence of a solvent for the silver halide, the igneous silver salts diffuse to the aluminum sheet where they are reduced and form a positive silver bubble from the original to which the carbon sheet was exposed.
The mounting unit 11 comprises two horizontal plates 14 and 15 which can be attached to the housing 10 by means of triangular support plates 16 provided with hooks 17 and 18 which fit over fixed support points 19 and 20 on each side of the appliance. The top (- plate 14
EMI5.4
is hingedly attached to the vocation unit by hinges 21 and 22.
In the closed touch position, as shown, the plate 14 does not rest its leading edge on two support blocks 23 and 24 that rest on the corners of the bottom plate 15.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
confirmed. The plate 14 is provided with a guide 25 which defines the lateral position of the blade 12. The position of the guide is adjustable in the transverse direction by means of an element which can be slid in the elongated opening 26 and the position of which can be fixed: by means of a knob 27. The lower plate 15 has a guide 28 which can be used to adjust the lateral opening. position of the blade 13.
The said guide can take up two positions, the second of which is drawn in broken lines. The guide is attached to the plate 15 by means of a push-button mechanism which is not shown in detail.
The treatment area in the device is formed by a shell 30 which has the longitudinal shape as shown in FIG. 2, and which is supported by a frame 36.
The treatment fluid is pumped from a container 31 by a small centrifugal pump 32 to the tray 30 where the fluid flows in through an opening 33 in a side wall. The level of the liquid in the bowl is kept constant by a vertical overflow pipe 34 located on the other side wall of the bowl, the bottom edge of which connects to the bottom of the bowl 30. This overflow pipe is shown in detail in figure 3. It is formed by a plastic tube with a square cross-mandrel, the front edge of which, according to the figure, is provided with a rectangular opening.
The side walls of the tube adjacent to this opening are provided with rebates 51 and 52 where the baffle plates 53 and 54 are recessed. Near the bottom, the tube 34 has an opening 55, the dimensions of which are such that the amount of liquid pumped by the pump 32 per unit time to the treatment tray is always greater than the amount of liquid passed through it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
opening and through the cracks between dc:
baffle plates and the edges of the rectangular opening can flow out of the tube 34. In this way, there will always be a small excess of liquid in the shell over the top edge of the shot plate 53 straw man, whereby the liquid pill in the shell is kept accurately constant. The liquid flowing into the tube 34 passes through the opening 38 and the tube 39 back to the container 31.
The purpose of the opening 55 in the tube 34 is to provide a fairly intense flow of the liquid mass in the shell. The surface flow created by the overflowing of the liquid over the baffle plate 53 is of little use to the movement of the liquid in the shell, and therefore this flow is kept small. o.v. the flow through the opening 55.
The tray 30 is provided with ribs 40 which are spaced from one another in the transverse direction of the device and which define the path of the blade 13 through the treatment fluid in the tray. Guide plates 41 and 42 define the path of the blade 12 through the treatment zone. The plates 41 and 42 are provided with numerous non-depicted openings which allow the circulation of the treatment liquid.
The blades are transported through the apparatus by means of the roller pairs 43, 44 and 45, 46 that feed the blade 12 and the blade 13, respectively, into the treatment zone, and by the roller pair 47, 48 that the two blades firmly together as they leave the treatment area.
These roller pairs are driven by an electric motor, schematically represented by
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the element: 63. During the operation of the apparatus, the roller pair 47,48 can rotate continuously, while the rotation of the roller pairs 43, 44 and 45,46 can be controlled by microswitches operated by the leading edge of the ring blades when these blades are slid into the device, so that an accurate position of the blades in register with each other in the longitudinal direction is possible.
Such an apparatus for registering the both sheets is described in detail in our British Patent Application No. 19,889/68: "Apparatus for use in the diffusion transfer copying process", filed on
April 26, 1968.
The operation of the present device is as follows.
The device is provided with a treatment liquid suitable for treating the relevant photographic material, and in the rebates 51 and 52 there is the necessary number of stiffeners, or if necessary one stiffener with the required. height, so that the treatment liquid in the tray will reach a level which, taking into account the transport speed of the rollers and the path length of the webs, will provide the required treatment time.
The motor 63 driving the rollers and the motor driving pump 32 are started by means of the switch button 82. An indicator lamp built into the transparent cover of the switch button indicates that the appliance is switched on. A second tell-tale lamp provided in the transparent cap 87 is controlled by a float mounted in the container 31 such that the lamp lights up when the level of the liquid in the container 31 falls below a certain minimum, thus providing a sufficient liquid supply to the tray 30 is no longer
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
is insured.
With the aid of the feeding device 11, the blades 12 and 13 are pushed into the device. The two blades pass through the treatment zone in separate paths in a predetermined time, and are then pressed tightly together by the roller pair 47, 48 to initiate the diffusion transfer.
After the sheets are removed from the device by the roller pair 47, 48, they are separated by the operator after a few seconds and the image side of the aluminum sheet is treated with a fixer composition to maintain the ink-accepting properties of the image areas. and improve the ink repellency properties of the non-image parts of the obtained printing plate. After that, the aluminum printing plate is treated with a lacquer composition to improve mechanical resistance of the image.
The following table illustrates the changes in the effective treatment spring of the negative sheet and the aluminum black that are obtained at different levels of the treating fluid in the described device.

The different heights H were obtained by different combinations of three baffle plates with the respective heights of 0.5-1 and 2 cm.
The height of each baffle plate can be stated directly on the plate. Other indications may also be provided on the plates. It may happen that a series of plates of different heights may also have different temperature indications, etc.
The overflow device in the device according to the invention is not limited to the described embodiment.
In a modified embodiment, the adjustable ovarian channel can also be formed by a round vertical pipe provided with a sliding sleeve, the height of the top edge of which determines the level of the liquid.
According to another modified embodiment, the channel may be formed by a flexible or a tiltable tube, the height of the top edge of which changes as a function of the inclination of the tube.
