<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
C = 0,32 %
Mn = 1,2 %
Si = 0,21 %
P = 0,040 %
S = 0,025 %
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to a process for rolling steel wires or rods with a diameter of between 5 and 12 mm, according to which a wire or rod blank is passed between the cylinders of successive cages, the finishers of which ensure a reduction. section of the blank of at least 50%
This process makes it possible to improve the quality of the steel wires or rods, that is to say their mechanical characteristics which depend considerably on the heat treatment cycle undergone by the steel during rolling.
The purpose of the known methods of this type is to reduce the temperature of the wires or rods at the end of rolling or to accelerate the cooling of these wires or of these rods after rolling.
In these known processes, the operation is carried out as follows respectively: - the temperature of the billet reheating furnace is reduced in order to complete the rolling of the wires or the rounds at a temperature determined in advance, - the rolling is stopped before d 'do the or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the last passes until the blank of the wire or the round reaches a predetermined temperature, the wire or the rolled round is cooled on the solid lacquering of a cooler at the outlet of the rolling mill to decrease the temperature more quickly - temperature of this wire or round, - the wire or the rolled rod is cooled at the outlet of the rolling mill in - ducts sprayed with water, - the wire or the rolled rod is cooled at the outlet of the rolling mill on clotheslines, channels or other devices blown in the air,
- The wire or the rolled round is cooled at the outlet of the rolling mill successively in conduits sprayed with water and on clotheslines, channels or other devices blown in the air.
The process according to the invention is mainly applied to the rolling of wires or rods for reinforced concrete made of semi-hard steel, the carbon content of which is approximately 0.3% and the manganese content of approximately 1.3% and whose mechanical properties are particularly sensitive to heat treatment. This process according to the invention makes it possible to obtain, for these same threads or rounds, an elastic limit of approximately 10 kg / mm 2 than that which would have been obtained by a known process.
In this way, the son or rods rolled by the method according to the invention have an elastic limit greater than
42 kg / mmê without expensive alloying elements or harmful to the weldability of the steel must be added to the latter during its production.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
To this end, in the process according to the invention, two successive cooling operations are combined, taking place respectively before and after the finishing cages.
Thus before these finishing cages, the blank is cooled in an intermediate cooling ramp to a temperature below the transformation point A - of the steel. On the other hand, after said finishing cages, the wire or the round is cooled in a terminal cooling ramp at the outlet of which the temperature of this thread or of this round is between 700 and 8000 ° C. and is generally approximately 750 C.
According to a particular feature of the new process, the wire or the wound round is further cooled at the outlet of the terminal cooling ramp, in particular by air blown through the coil.
The invention also relates to a new rolling mill for the aforementioned wires or rounds, comprising, before its finishing cages, an intermediate cooling ramp in which the blank of the wire or round is cooled to a temperature below the point of transformation A of the steel and, after said finishing cages, a terminal cooling ramp at the outlet of which the temperature of the wire or the round is between 700 and 8000 C and generally 7500 C.
Generally, many wire or round rolling mills have between the preparatory stands and the finishing stands, a relatively large space in which the intermediate cooling ramp with water or air, the length and fluid flow rate are regulated so that the blank
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of wire or round enters the finishing unit at a temperature of about 720 and, in any case, below the processing point A3 of the steel.
Rolling in the finishing stands at this relatively low temperature has the effect of greatly reducing the grain size and consequently improving the mechanical characteristics of the steel and in particular its elastic limit. However, the significant work of deformation in the finishing cages results in an increase in the temperature of the wire or the round which leaves the rolling mill at a temperature of approximately 850 C.
At the outlet of the rolling mill is placed the terminal cooling ramp with water or air, the length and flow of fluid of which are adjusted so that the temperature of the wire or the round at the outlet of the latter ramp is between 700 @ and 800 C and is located around 750 C The purpose of cooling after rolling is to prevent the. coalescence of the grains which would destroy the beneficial effect obtained by cooling before the finishing cages.
Finally, if the wire or the round is wound on a winder which follows the terminal cooling ramp, its cooling can be further accelerated by blowing fresh air through the coil.
Finally, the invention also relates to a wire or round as mentioned above, manufactured by the new rolling process and by means of the new rolling mill.
The current invention is illustrated by an example of an embodiment using a rolling mill shown schematically in the single figure, without limitation.

This example relates to the rolling of wires from steel billets whose composition is:
C = 0.32%
Mn = 1.2%
Si = 0.21%
P = 0.040%
S = 0.025%
The billets are heated in an oven 1 from where. they leave at a temperature of 11500 C with a square section of 65 mm side.
The billets pass one after the other between the fluted cylinders of fourteen successive preparatory cages. Each thread blank from the billet circulates in a straight line through the group of the first ten cages, designated by the reference numeral 2, as it winds through the other four cages 3, 4, 5 and 6.
On leaving the last preparatory stand 6, the blank of the wire which then has a cross section of 78.5 mm, passes through an intermediate cooling ramp 7 which it leaves at a temperature of 720 C. Then , the blank of the wire is engaged between the splined cylinders of a group of finishing cages ,. designated by the reference number 8,
On leaving the last finishing stand, the wire blank then has a cross section of 28.3 mm2 and is at a temperature of 820 C
The rolled wire then passes through a ramp

terminal cooling 9 from which it leaves at a temperature (the 750 C to be wound in winders 10.
The yarn produced has the following mechanical characteristics when cold: - Tensile strength 70 kg / mm2, - Elastic limit 46 kg / mmê, - Elongation at break 30%
