"Conduits calorifugés par pulvérisation d'une mouss".-
EMI1.1
Qualification propoeée BREVET Pg pZRF,7,CTIONNEb!ENT
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

On va maintenant se référer au dessin annexé sur lequel ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Conduits insulated by spraying a foam" .-

Qualification proposed PATENT Pg pZRF, 7, CTIONNEb! ENT
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention will generally sand insulated ducts or pipelines, and in particular a method and apparatus for making and joining sections of an insulated duct, which method and apparatus uses as a heat insulating product one of the following. many commercially available foam plastics, such as polyurethane.
Although it has been proposed to provide a duct with a very effective heat-insulating coating by applying a pre-molded polyurethane foam around this duct, such a technique is relatively expensive. The present invention is particularly directed to an improved and more economical means of creating such insulation on a pipe. To this end, the Applicant has developed a process for applying by spraying a heat insulating material capable of producing a foam to the surface of the duct as the latter is advanced and rotates passing through the spray nozzle.
Preferably, the non-insulated duct is heated prior to the spray application of the foamable heat insulating material, which heat serves to accelerate and carry out the foaming process which takes place when mixing. spray which can form a foam is deposited on the duct. Then, in this method of the invention, the thus-insulated duct is continued to advance and rotate, while a barrier layer is subsequently applied. vis-à-vis water and vapors in the form of a mastic or a coating of another type and a wrapping of paper,
In addition to the pap spray application of a heat insulating material in accordance with the present invention 4 a section of a single duct, suitable elements have been provided to detect the presence of the front and rear ends of the duct so that the application of .this material insulated to this
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the latter is automatically suppressed in the areas adjacent to the ends of the duct, The invention also carries out a coating in succession by spraying with a heat-insulating material and, for this purpose, it uses a new means for momentarily coupling the ends of the adjacent duct sections .
After each section of pipe has been heat-insulated, a bitumen-based mastic is sprayed in two stages, while the heat-insulating material is still in a slightly tacky state. It has been found that early application of a thicker, mastic coating at this stage results in the formation of a surface film / over the heat insulating material which increases its durability and resistance to moisture absorption. , as well as the union between the heat-insulating material and the mastic. The present invention also relates to a novel process for insulating a non-insulated end junction, between two insulated conduits, after having joined them end to end.
Accordingly, the main object of the present invention is an improved method for applying to a conduit a heat insulating material having improved thermal efficiency along its length as well as in the area adjacent to the junctions of the conduits, and an improved material, in. foam for insulating ducts, this material having a thickened surface film,
We will now refer to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a block diagram of various operations of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing how the joint of the conduits is heat insulated in accordance with another general means of the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of adjacent ends of ducts as they would be momentarily coupled during the process of coating with heat insulating material,
Figure 4 is a cross section, taken at 4-4 of Figure 8, of an heat-insulating duct according to the invention,
With particular reference to FIG. 1, it can be seen that a non-insulated duct 10 is advanced by a suitable conveyor device (not shown).
in the direction of the dashed arrow, to pass through a cleaning and stripping station 14, After being heated by means of a heater 16, the advancing duct 10 having been cleaned enters a chamber 20 for re - Provide by spraying a suitable heat insulating material which can form a foam, such as polyurethane.
It is evident that other heat insulating materials such as glass foam, polystyrene foam or the like could be used. Those skilled in the art will readily see that chamber 20 may contain any suitable device for mixing and spraying. a two-piece foamable plastic material in which the foaming reaction commences about a few seconds after mixing and spraying of these foamable components.
Prior to passage of conduit 10 through heater 16 and spray chamber 20, conduit rotator 18 imparts rotation and lateral displacement to the conduit as it advances through the remaining operations. of the process. In this way, the heat-insulating material is little deposited. little on the outside of this duct in the chamber 20, and this material is uniformly distributed and gradually applied to the periphery of the duct.
In one embodiment of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In accordance with the invention, the duct is rotated at 20 rpm, and the area receiving the spray is sufficiently wide, having regard to the rate of lateral advance of the duct, that any point of the surface of the latter passes four times in the spraying zone. If it is desired to obtain a thickness of heat-insulating foam material equal to 50 mm, then a sufficient spray density is chosen to deposit, with each turn of the duct, a thickness of heat-insulating material equal to 12.5 mm. In one embodiment of the invention, it is possible to provide a heating device in the form of a crown, supplied with butane.
However, a water vapor passage through the conduit can also be used advantageously to raise the temperature of the surface of the conduit from 32 ° C to 49 ° C, which is a preferred temperature for carrying out the process forming a heat sink. polyurethane foam. If operating conditions permit, a preliminary corrosion protective coating can be applied before applying the heat insulating foam material. Such a coating could be useful when low temperature fluids are being conveyed through the duct. And when it is very likely that moisture will condense or to ensure the outer vapor barrier layer against any unexpected puncture, which may occur during installation or service.
Then, as the conduit 10 continues to advance it is treated by a water and vapor barrier coating device, generally indicated as 22. Device 22 includes a station 24 spraying a primer and a station 26 spraying a mastic.
A minimum of time is allowed to elapse between the passage of the conduits from the end of the spray chamber.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tion 20 and station 24 where the mastic primer is applied by spraying. It has been found that it is preferable to apply the spray at station 24 while the outside of the heat insulating material is still in a slightly tacky or half-cured state, which has the advantage of increasing the strength. thickness of the surface film. In this way the heat insulating material is made more durable and more resistant to moisture absorption.
The consistency of the primer spray applied at station 24 is also preferably chosen so that it is more fluid than that of the spray applied layer at station 26, so that the small spaces exist. the surface of the heat insulating material are completely sealed and the outer surface is made smooth to accommodate the heavier layer of putty, applied later. is lying
A wrapping station 28 is used to apply another layer constituting a protection vis-à-vis the sappers to the still tacky adhesive applied at the previous station 26. The vapor protection layer applied at station 28 is preferably made of kraft paper rolled up in spiral.
It is obvious that in the implementation of the invention it is possible to use different types of material constituting protection against water and vapors, and that it is not necessary that it be applied in this way. particular way. A bitumen based sealant is preferred.
Figure 1 shows the section of heat-insulated duct once completed in the form of an element 12. A control or monitoring device shown schematically at 30, which works in conjunction with the devices 20, 22 and 28, serves to start and stop the application of heat insulating material, primer spray, putty spray and paper wrapping at the appropriate places
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in the vicinity of the ends of each section of the pipes.
Of course, the controller 30 includes suitable sensing elements, which may be mechanical, optical or electrical, to determine the position of the ends of each section of duct so that heat insulating material is not unnecessarily applied to it. the area of the duct intended to be subsequently welded. although an excess of heat-insulating material can be applied to the ends of the duct which would then be removed in the area of the weld, this removal would cause ruptures of the cellular structure formed by the heat-insulating material in its sprayed form in this area, this which would increase the risk of water infiltration through the calorific material.
Fig. 4 shows in cross section the heat insulated duct. The expanded foam heat insulating material 32 has an approximate thickness of 50 mm, as mentioned above. The primer coating and the water and vapor barrier coating applied by the respective devices 24 and 26 are shown at 34, The paper applied at the wrapping station 28 is shown at 36.
In Fig. 2 two adjacent duct sections 10-10 are seen welded at 38. It should be noted that the ends of the layers 32 of the sprayed heat insulating material terminate in rounded end portions 40 at an end. short distance from the end of the ducts. To insulate the junction of the welded conduits, a sheet of a substantially rigid material 42, such as galvanized iron, is wound in a cylindrical shape around the outer wall of the material insulating the conduits, and fixed to it. the latter by two strips 44.
The cylindrical sheet 42 comprises at least one opening 46 through which
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
a sufficient quantity of polyurethane referenced 48 is poured or otherwise introduced which can form a foam so that the whole of the empty interior zone of the junction is filled.
Once the liquid polyurethane 48 has taken on a foamed state and has set in said interior zone, the opening 46, the cylindrical sheet 42 and the ends of this sheet can be coated with a suitable sealant. create on this zone of the junction a water and vapor barrier layer. It can be seen that the junction of the conduits then comprises a continuous heat-insulating covering having substantially the same thickness as the body part of the adjacent conduit. The galvanized sheet 42 can be left in the position shown so as to obtain a complete screen against moisture over the entire length of the duct sections. Alternatively, the sheet 42 can be removed and a screen applied. classic vapor protector.
If the latter method is used, there is an advantage in applying a coating of a non-adherent type to the interior surface of the sheet 42 to prevent rupture of the closed cell structure of the foam and to allow reuse said sheet without carrying out a cleaning operation.
Figure 3 shows the fitting that can be used to join adjacent duct sections 10-10 in the operations illustrated in Figure 1. The body of the fitting, generally designated 50, comprises one half. male 52 and a female half 54. Each half comprises many similar elements to which the same references have been given. Each half comprises a long tube 56 which supports a circular plate 58 fixed to one end of this tube. An annular elastic element 60 is disposed near the plate
58 against which it is held in contact by a plate

compression 64.
A screw (or threaded stud) 62 disposed at the inner end of the tube 56 freely passes through an opening made in the plate 58 and is screwed to fit the central part of the plate 64. A protection element 66 is fixed to the central part of the plate. each of the tubes 56. The element 66 stabilizes the outer ends of said halves of the fitting and prevents foreign material from entering the ends of the pipes. The outside diameter of one of the tubes 56 is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the adjacent tube 56, allowing the first tube to be inserted into the second.
68 'One of the tubes has two projecting nipples / it engages a conventional bayonet type slot 70 in the other tube. To use this coupling device, each half of the connector 50 is introduced into the respective ends of the sections of the conduits to be joined, and the screws 62 are blocked by means of a suitable tool inserted in the tube. 56. The locking of the screws 62 has the effect of axially moving the compression plates 64 towards the plates 58 to radially open out the elastic annular elements 60 so that the latter come to bear against the inner wall of the conduits.
Once each half of the connector 50 has been fixed to its corresponding end of the duct, the sections of the ducts can be made integral by moving them a little axially and by rotating them a little with respect to each other. to block the nipples 68 in the slot 70.
In this way, the new connector of the invention enables the sections of the conduits to be joined together easily and quickly before subjecting them to the insulation operations of FIG. 1, once the thermal insulation process has been carried out. , we can quickly disconnect each
