<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Method and device for separating slag from metal in flow converters"

or morologically, the M60anism controls said buffer..t this buffer itself, being arranged outside the ± Cure
The operation of such a known device is as follows
The tap hole is first formed by means of the plug, then the melting vessel is tilted. In this position of the converter, the buffer is removed, and the metal flowed free of slag.
The slag is in fact retained due to the fact that the lathe is returned to its initial position. The drawbacks of such an installation consist mainly in the fact that only fractions of the total quantity of metal present in the furnace can thus be removed. If we want to keep all of the metal free, we inevitably carry quite a lot of slag with it. These installations, moreover, cannot be applied to casting converters, in which all of the steel is removed each time after the reduction operation.
This is mainly due to the fact that, when such converters are in the tilted position, the metal to be cast is located below the molten slag *
The present invention applies to casting converters, in which the whole of the melt must be able to be taken in a single operation, without comprising any slag, while the metal is directly below the mass in

fusion during casting. It relates to a device and a method for achieving the separation of the steel and the slag during casting.
To this end, according to an essential characteristic of the invention, one begins by projecting a gas, for example compressed air, against the metal jet, with an energy such that the slag mixed with the metal is separated from the latter. .
Immediately afterwards, the casting opening is closed by means of an elbow lever, hinged on the outer casing near the casting hole, and actuated by a pressurized air cylinder. At the point of attack of the rod of said cylinder, said bent lever forms a counterweight. The other arm of the lever carries, on the side facing towards the pouring opening, a refractory plastic material, for example a coil of asbestos bead, arranged in a suitable support. A complete separation of the metal and the slag is thus achieved. The angled lever is kept locked in its rest position by means of a pin which can advantageously also be actuated by compressed air.
One embodiment of a device according to the invention is shown, sohematically and simply by way of example, by the accompanying drawing.
FIG. 1 is a side view of the device according to the invention. On the side of a pouring opening 1, an elbow lever 3 is articulated at 2 on the outer casing of the converter. An arm 3 'of the angled lever 3 carries, on the side facing the pouring opening 1, a support 4 intended to receive a material 5, refractory and plastic. This material can be, for example, a winding of asbestos cord. The other arm 3 "of the lever, constituting at the same time a counterweight, is connected to the piston rod 6 of a pneumatic cylinder 7. The latter is rotatably mounted at 12 on the outer casing of the converter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
On its outer side, the arm 3 "of the lever comprises a recess 8, into which penetrates a pin 9 intended to keep it locked in the rest position, and which can advantageously be actuated by compressed air. A pneumatic cylinder. 9, actuating said pin, is also arranged on the outer casing of the converter. The pivot points 10 and 12 of the crank lever 3, of the piston rod 6, and of the cylinder 7, are in the rest position. , on the same plane The locking device of the angled lever 3 is shown separately in FIG.
FIG. 2 is a view showing the arm 3 "of the lever, provided with the recess 8 in which the pin 9 engages, actuated by compressed air.
FIG. 3 is a view showing a compressed air nozzle 13, offset by 90 with respect to the closure device according to FIG. 1. This nozzle can however also be arranged in the center of the arm 3 'of the lever, so that, in the open position of the elbow lever 3, it is directed towards the casting jet.
During the casting, one begins by projecting, through the nozzle 13, a pressurized gas towards the casting jet. The force of this jet is chosen so that any slag that may be entrained is separated from the metal. As soon as the expulsion of said slag shows that they are entrained at the same time as the casting mass, which announces the approach of the end of the casting, the angled lever 3 is actuated by the compressed air cylinder, who, at this moment, is already under pressure.
The operation is triggered by the fact that a line 15 of compressed air supply to the locking pin 9 is ventilated, and the pin is brought back by a spring 16. Under the action of the weight. lever arm 3 ", the angled lever disengages from its locking and is pressed against the pouring opening 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by the compressed air cylinder 7 and the piston rod 6. The arms 3 'and 3 "of the lever 3 are arranged so as to form an obtuse angle between them. When the slag is emptied through the mouth of the converter, which is then tilted at an angle of 1800 with respect to its position during the metal casting, the bent lever, after having ventilated the pressure cylinder 7, returns, under the effect of its own weight, in its initial position.
It is held there by the fact that the ventilation valve of the supply line 15 to the locking pin 9 closes, while the line is at. new pressurization.
The opening of the taphole can optionally be reduced first, so that no slag can flow out first, and then, when all of the molten steel has been removed, the valve is closed. tap hole, from the outside, in accordance with the present invention. In this case, it is. it is not essential to project pressurized gas onto the metal jet.
