<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On a cons-
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EXEMPLE I.
B.T. - tampon thermique
D - addition en quantité pondérale.

"Process for the production of extrinsic, electrically stabilized, and extrinsic semiconductors obtained by this process" .-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the present invention is a process for the production of extrinsic semiconductors, intended in particular for electrical heating, a process according to which semiconductors are obtained which can be molded, in the form of a layer, and which possess durable and stable properties for an indefinitely long period of time.
and for a range of variable temperatures,
Semiconductors of this type are already known, but their production requires either simple bodies of at least 99.9999% purity, such as germanium or silicon, with the addition of atoms of other metals. , for example, or oxides of transition metals which undergo a disproportionation under the effect of temperature, or additions made in addition to ions of different values, to displace the equilibrium of the reaction:
EMI2.1
thanks to which they become conductive materials.
But the semiconductor elements of this kind heat up after being plugged into a current source, the temperature of the device increases, the equilibrium of the ORP process varies, so that the number of current carrying agents increases or decreases. The ambient atmosphere exerts its effects on the resistance of such elements, in particular through the oxygen contained therein, which oxidizes the conductive device at higher temperatures. We have seen
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It has been found that an addition of 0.001% oxygen can change @ a few trillion times the conductivity of the element which burns or becomes an insulator.
From a technical point of view, the production of this type of extrinsic semiconductor requires the use of raw materials of very high purity, which considerably influences the cost price.
Similarly, in extrinsic semiconductors, it has been found that the role of current-carrying agents generally falls to the electrons and the elements of / addition at lower temperatures, while this role falls. to the main lattice electrons and vacancies at higher temperatures; therefore, in these known semiconductors, even without variation in the equilibrium state of the reaction, the conductivity rises sharply.
It was the object of the invention to find a buffering substance such that it would control the number of current carrying agents under each condition, especially at different temperatures, so that the properties of the heating element according to the invention remain constant over a wide range of temperatures.
It has now been found that this object can be attained, and this is the subject of the present invention, when the composition consists of a basic substance of metal compounds and, optionally of additives as a solution. in which the condition for stabilizing the conductivity relates to the equilibrium
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
free of redox potential, that is to say, that buffers are used therein.
It has also been found that stabilized supplemented semiconductors for electric heating are produced when the semiconductor composition contains, apart from the substance, and, optionally / addition, a substance which. , in the remainder of this memorandum will be referred to as the “thermal buffer”.
Long tests have shown that compounds or simple bodies, which possess an ion whose caliber is smaller than that of the basic substance, are very suitable since, on the one hand, at lower temperatures, they will act as additive elements, since they will lodge inside the structural cell of the crystallographic lattice, and, on the other hand, at higher temperatures, they will lodge in the nodes of the lattice and they will produce current carriers of a type opposite to that of the main agents so that partial recombination will occur and the number of stream carriers will return to their original state.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that the production of stabilized extrinsic semiconductors for use in electric heating is carried out by adding said "thermal buffers" to the base substance, or possibly to the addition elements.
Ions of a size smaller than the size of the ions of the main network are very suitable as thermal buffers. The best effects are produced by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the ions of simple bodies of the second group of the periodic classification, since they have a smaller caliber.
The extrinsic semiconductors according to the invention are produced as follows; is heated to a temperature close to that of the softening point of the mixture consisting of metal compounds to which have been added addition elements and, necessarily, substances which have @idont as a buffer on the state of the conducti @ the electric unit and, then, this heated mixture is crushed and cooled rapidly; optionally, this heating and grinding process is repeated several times until a finely crystallized dry powder is obtained. Sometimes it is useful to mix the components of the prepared mixture well at first.
It is then useful to dissolve or disperse them in a solvent or diluent such as water, alcohols, acids, ethers or others, and after thorough mixing, the solution is subjected to evaporation, after which the procedure is the same as according to the invention.
All the metal compounds can be used, in the process according to the invention, as a basic substance, but they will have to be resistant to temperatures above 70 ° C., while optionally, as addition elements, can be used just as well. reducing and oxidizing substances, for example, oxygen, chromic acid, hydrogen peroxide, alcohols, hydrogen, metal compounds of transition groups, of a value other than the basic substance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The extrinsic semiconductor according to the invention should contain from 50 to 99.9% by weight of the base substance, optionally mixed with additives, while the amount of thermal buffer substance will vary within the limits of 0.1 to 50% by weight of the mixture.
The extrinsic semiconductors according to the invention can be applied, according to known methods, by sputtering or by coating. They penetrate the monomolecular layer of the surface of the heat-resistant substance. By coating a transparent surface such as glass, quartz, mica, materials etc., plastics, mineral substances, for example, with the substance according to the invention, positive elements are obtained. seductive transparent heating layer. This fact provides advantageous employment opportunities, particularly in the chemical, pharmaceutical, etc. industry.
Coating, with extrinsic semiconductors according to the invention, other refractory substrates such as ceramics, porcelain, minerals, enameled or coated with metal oxides, gives a whole new range. new applications useful for technology and the domestic economy.
Likewise, thanks to the extrinsic semiconductors according to the invention, it is possible to give various shapes to the heating elements, which not only, successfully replace the known resistant elements such as the nichromic and silicic resistant wires, but their superior quality from the point of view of / longevity and range of uses, since it is possible to produce them in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
any suitable and, in addition, they can be used in any temperature range up to 2500 even.
The invention is characterized in that the price
EMI7.1
The cost of the extrinsic semiconductors according to the invention is several times lower than that of known semiconductors of the same type, since the raw materials used of technical purity are very cheap.
EXAMPLE I.
