Among the known elements which are capable of precipitating fine carbides and / or nitrides, there may be mentioned vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, etc.

It is also known, as already mentioned above, that the presence of small particles dispersed in the ferrite increases the resistance to deformation of this same ferrite; however, there is a relationship between hardening (ie, increasing resistance to deformation) and the size, shape, distribution and nature of the precipitated particles.
Another object of the present invention is to specify these relationships, in the case of precipitation of carbides and / or nitrides, to determine their most favorable values as well as the processes making it possible to obtain them.
The method which is the subject of the present invention consists essentially in applying a hot treatment which can be either a standardization or a hot deformation work, such as for example a rolling, a forging, to a steel whose basic composition is next :

whose dimensions and distribution are substantially homogeneous in the iron grains a.
It was observed on the one hand that this treatment parma: to increase the elastic limit of the steel and on the other hand that the obtaining of fine precipitates also acts on the size of the ferritic grain and possibly of the austenitic grain, if the Precipitation already occurs in phase y. A refinement of the grain occurs which is favorable to the increase in strength and resilience.
According to an advantageous variant of the process of the invention, the normalization treatment is carried out at temperatures between the transformation points A3 and (A3 + 100 C).
The precipitates then have the most favorable size o (50 - 200 A) and an average inter-distance of between 0.1 and 1 micron, that is to say optimal so that at the elastic limit re-

According to another advantageous variant of the process of the invention, the hot work is characterized by an onset temperature in which there are no precipitates in the steel, that is to say between 1050 C and 1300 C. C and a final temperature included in a zone as low as possible between the transformation points A1 and A3.
The attached figure will give a better idea of the influence of precipitation on the value of the elastic limit.
In this figure, the elastic limit is represented on the ordinate as a function of the grain size, given on the abscissa.
@ The elastic limit is given in kg / mm2, the grain size is given in a conventional unit d-1/2, d grain diameter. This is also given in? ASTM.
Three so-called Petch lines have been shown in this graph, representing the variations in elastic limit as a function of d-1/2 for Swedish iron (line 7); for a steel containing 0.16% C and 1.17% Mn (line 8); a steel containing 0.15 C and 0.6 Mn (line 9).
