<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
i
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
commerce.
<EMI ID=15.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>
Exemple 2.-
On part d'un mat fibreux épais de 10 à 12 mm et
<EMI ID=17.1>
<EMI ID=18.1>
<EMI ID=20.1>
<EMI ID=21.1>
<EMI ID=22.1>
<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1>
<EMI ID=26.1>
<EMI ID=27.1>
<EMI ID=28.1>
<EMI ID=29.1>
<EMI ID=30.1>

<EMI ID = 1.1>
The invention relates to non-woven fiber sheets. sheets the fibers of which are linked to each other at at least some of their points of intersection
<EMI ID = 2.1>
manufacture .of these sheets.
Its aim, above all, is to make these methods and sheets such that they respond better than to date to the various requirements of practice.
It is essentially characterized in that one begins by binding together the fibers of a web of interlaced fibers using a first organic binder under conditions such that after its solidification, this binder remains capable of reacting chemically. with an <EMI ID = 3.1>
such another binder on the sheet thus bonded beforehand which causes these two binder to react chemically with each other by swelling the first by the second, said chemical reaction preferably proceeding by a condensation of the first or of the second type as defined below or by use of free radicals or reactive double bonds.
The invention also relates to sheets of non-woven fibers obtained according to the processes in question, sheets of which the fibers are linked together by composite solidified droplets formed of several binders which have reacted chemically on each other, as well as special devices. used for the implementation of these processes and that the articles or sets
<EMI ID = 4.1>
with the aid of the additional description which follows, which is, of course, given above all by way of indication.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
nonwoven sheet exhibiting novel and advantageous qualities, the procedure is as follows or in a similar manner.
Before getting to the heart of the matter, it should be remembered that methods are already known for manufacturing sheets of non-woven fibers, the fibers of which are linked together by successive application of two different binders.
But to this day, the properties acquired by these leaves during the different stages of their
i
<EMI ID = 6.1>
i of the binding and of the more or less ventilated structure obtained, became final after each stage of the production, the use of successive binders being considered as
a succession of unitary operations complete in themselves.
In other words, each binder was characterized by its own properties considered independently of those of the binder applied during the operations immediately preceding or following, the only criterion usually
retained being that of the compatibility between them
various elements constituting the sheet.
On the contrary, according to the invention, advantage is taken of the reaction possibilities specific to the compositions.
already solidified binders, said reaction possibilities
in the solid state resulting on the one hand from a greater or lesser unsaturation of the characteristic chemical functions; of each of the binders, and secondly of the momentary at least superficial swelling of the solidified globules
of each binder by the following binder.
This measure makes it possible to reduce the quantity of the following 'binders' necessary to impart to the structure
a given property and increase the retention period of this property,
Indeed, the chemical bond produced between the different binders is much more intimate and therefore
solid than a purely physical or mechanical bond of independent overlapping layers liable to slip
on top of each other.
The first organic binder, which forms solidified droplets or weld spots within the fibrous structure, is chosen so as to produce within these droplets a three-dimensional network furnished with free reactive functions resulting from a deliberately incomplete crosslinking, or, which is identical, from a deliberately deficient or excess stoichiometry of its constituents,
The second organic binder is chosen so as to swell the first binder and to react chemically with it,
<EMI ID = 7.1>
In other words, the second binder is chemically grafted onto the first instead of providing with the aid of said second binder a simple sheathing of the pre-bonded structure, sheathing adhering in a "purely mechanical manner to this structure.
As long as the stoichiometry of the second binder is also deficient or excess compared to the topochiraic conditions of its reaction with the first binder, this second binder remains reactive with respect to a third binder which can be applied in a similar manner, this second binder "Stickiness" of "reactivity" can be maintained for as long as necessary in the application of successive binders so that each applied binder remains reactive to the following binders, while being chemically bonded to the preceding binders.
It is understood that the existence of chemical bonds between the various binders constituting the binding of the sheet r
<EMI ID = 8.1>
the permanence over time of the properties which have been conferred on it while using, for an identical result, smaller quantities of the various binders
than those used according to the prior art, since the application of successive binders leads to the formation of a single three-dimensional network which is more solid than that resulting from the sole juxtaposition of three-dimensional films without any chemical bond between them.
This advantage is particularly evident for the adhesion of the abrasive particles in the fibrous structure: the abrasion resistance is indeed
markedly increased when these particles are introduced:
in the fibrous structure within a chemically binder
which, reactive within the meaning of the invention, this / for a given "scouring" effect, makes it possible to increase the percentage of voids (by
example greater than 95% by volume) and therefore the economy.
The chemical reaction between the two binders can
be of any desirable type, and in particular:
a condensation polymerization of the first type, that is to say accompanied by the elimination of water molecules or other light molecules (ammonia) alcohol
light ...) and intervening between a first binder comprising
free amino and / or hydroxy groups and a second binder having a reactivity of the carboxy or hydroxy type,
a condensation polymerization of the second type, that is to say leading to a structure similar to that resulting from the elimination of light molecules, although
this elimination does not actually occur, and i intervening between a first binder comprising free amino and / or hydroxy groups and a second binder whose main reactivity is due to the presence of epoxy and / or imido and / or lactam rings, etc. in its macromolecular structure,
or a polymerization initiated by vinyl or allylic double bonds comprised by the two binders
or by free radicals generated spontaneously or easy to generate on these binders.
In what follows, we will give three examples of implementation of the invention respectively implementing these three types of reaction, these examples only being illustrative and of course in no way limiting the invention.
These: kings examples show respectively:
Example 1, the preparation of a fleece fabric exhibiting good resistance to cleaning agents and produced from inexpensive binders; Example 2, the preparation of a cured sheet having a structure
<EMI ID = 9.1>
exhibiting particularly high resistance to repeated flexing.
<EMI ID = 10.1>
In a first stage, a sheet 8 mm thick and weighing
54 g / m <2> by forming a fibrous mat using three denier polyacrylonitrile fibers 40 mm long and applying successively by spraying on both sides of this mat, at a rate of 12 g / m <2 >, an aqueous dispersion of a hydroxylated binder consisting of an alcohol of
<EMI ID = 11.1>
molecular weight and low saponification index).
<EMI ID = 12.1>
then exhibits sufficient dry stability. On the other hand, as soon as it is humidified, it is no longer possible to
subject it to the slightest manipulation without it being; distorted and ultimately rendered unusable.
It is then placed on a continuous conveyor and a second binder is successively sprayed on each of its faces comprising two parts of zinc chloride, two parts of oxalic acid, twenty parts of a polyacrylic acid commonly used for finishing fibers.
of polyamide, and water in sufficient quantity to obtain a suitable viscosity, this spraying being carried out so that the total dry weight of the finished sheet
<EMI ID = 13.1>
The nonwoven sheet thus obtained exhibits a pleasantly firm feel and the same resistance to dry cleaning solvents as if it had been produced using much more common binders.
expensive (crosslinkable polyacrylic elastomer or latex). Its resistance to household washing is also excellent and
<EMI ID = 14.1>
trade.
This property is explained by the fact that the application of the second binder and the subsequent crosslinking cause a mutual chemical reaction between the hydroxyl functions of the alcohol of the first binder and the carboxy groups of the polyacrylic acid of the second binder.
(polycondensation of the first type accompanied by the elimination of a water molecule).
It has also been found that it is possible to obtain the same reaction between the first and second binders above marl if the first comprises in addition to the polyvinyl alcohol used 5 parts by weight of a
<EMI ID = 15.1>
weight of a salt likely to. catalyze crosslinking
of the first binder, a salt chosen in this case from the Lewis acids commonly used for this purpose. This arrangement leads to a substantial insolubilization of the first binder without, however, hindering its reaction with the
<EMI ID = 16.1>
good permanence is generally relatively weak without modifying its qualities.
Example 2.-
We start with a thick fibrous mat of 10 to 12 mm and
<EMI ID = 17.1>
polyamide 66 of 15 denier and 40 to 60 mm long,
This mast is tied so that its final weight
<EMI ID = 18.1>
acrylonitrile butadiene elastomer comprising in its structure 4% of carboxy groups (this percentage being indicated by weight of unsaturated acid introduced into the terpolymer) supplemented with an amount of a precondensate of melamine on formalin ten times greater than that normally necessary to ensure complete crosslinking of the elastomer by saturation of said carboxy groups. A web is obtained whose properties are little modified compared to those of a web for which the proportions of the two main constituents (elastomer and precondensate) of the binder would have been approximately <EMI ID = 19.1>
On heating, a polymerization reaction is then observed, accompanied by a very clear evolution of formalin.
We see that the finished product, which weighs
<EMI ID = 20.1>
97.2% by volume) and cut into abrasive pads, has the same stiffness as a similar product weighing 800 g /
<EMI ID = 21.1>
metry would prevent any subsequent reaction.
It is also noted that the longevity of the pads obtained is increased and that their sensitivity to water is reduced because there is no appreciable difference between the rigidity of new pads and the rigidity of wet pads after several uses, unlike
to what could be observed with tampons manufactured
under similar conditions, but without appealing to the mutual reactivity of the two successively applied binders.
To try to explain this particular phenomenon. advantageously, several films of the
<EMI ID = 22.1>
condensate of melamine and formalin used, in this case a trimethylol melamine, grew steadily by a
<EMI ID = 23.1>
acetic anhydride and subsequent titration after hydrolysis in the acid form of the anhydride which has remained free, The curves
<EMI ID = 24.1>
present in the free state in the crosslinked films of the first binder in an amount practically proportional to the content of this binder in trimethylol melamine.
We know that these functions in the free state are capable of opening the epoxy cycle by a mechanism known as polycondensation of the second type, and it is probably such a reaction which explains the release of formalin during the final crosslinking, and by following the specially advantageous and unexpected properties manifested by the finished article.
Example 3.-
With 10 denier fibers 40 mm long obtained by polycondensation of terephthalic acid on <EMI ID = 25.1>
20 mm,
An aqueous dispersion comprising 100 parts by weight of a copolymerizate of
various acrylic esters such as those known under the trade names "Primai" or "Hycar.série 2600" and
20 parts by weight of a formalin precondensate on a modified melanin having at least one side chain having an unsaturated structure characterized by a reactive double bond. Among such modified melamines,
<EMI ID = 26.1>
dimethylol diallyl melamine prepared for the occasion by heating in basic medium the substituted melamine and excess formalin.
Said aqueous dispersion, which constitutes the "first binder", is formed into a foam by beating.
and applied with a doctor blade on one face of the mat, the excess binder being sucked by a vacuum device placed on the other face in a manner known per se. The sheet is then heated so as to impart to the first binder applied
the qualities resulting from the crosslinking of the copolymer of reactive acrylic esters by the methylol groups of the substituted melamine precondensate.
In the same way as in example 2, we
produces several thin films of this first binder on which the hydroxy groups and hydroxy groups are dosed after heating under the same conditions as the web of fibers.
free amino, according to the procedure already indicated, The results obtained show that the crosslinking is practically complete and that these functions are only
slight excess. The free double bonds are then assayed by bromometry, and it is observed that under the particularly unfavorable conditions of the test on film
thin, at least 50% of the many double bonds that
one can evaluate by calculation are revealed on analysis.
We then apply by oxpressing on the web
<EMI ID = 27.1>
the styrene of a particularly reactive polyester consisting of the reaction product of glycerin with
hexachloroendumethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid, such as
<EMI ID = 28.1>
0.2 parts by weight of diethylaniline and 3 parts by weight of an organic pigment.
After heating for 20 minutes at 120 [deg.], It is found that not only the rigidity, characterized by the flexural modulus of a test piece cut from the web, is increased by 20 to 60%, at an equal squeezing rate compared to that resulting from the use of an unsubstituted melamine, but also that the completely cured polyester has almost completely lost its tendency to crumble under the effect of alternating bends of 360 [deg.] applied around 'an axis passing through the center of gravity of the test piece and parallel to its width whereas such crumbling occurs with a test piece r obtained under the same conditions as the previous one, but using an unsubstituted melamine.
We are therefore led to admit that, in the present example, there is a chemical reaction between, on the one hand, the styrene and the polyester of the second binder and, on the other hand, the allylic double bonds of the first binder.
It should be noted that the maintenance of the "afterglow
<EMI ID = 29.1>
independent of the method of application of the successive binders,
and it is clear from the above examples that, depending on technical requirements, this application
can be provided by spraying in the form of a cloud of droplets, as well as in the form of a foam using a vacuum device, or in the form of a solution or dispersion, thixotropic or not, provided that at the time of its application and / or subsequent crosslinking, each binder can chemically graft onto one of the
less of the preceding binders while retaining, if necessary, an ability to react with respect to the following binders.
As it goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from what precedes, the invention is in no way limited
to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been
more particularly considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
<EMI ID = 30.1>
under conditions such that after solidification, this binder remains capable of reacting chemically with another suitable binder, and in that such another binder is then applied to the sheet thus bonded beforehand, which chemically reacts these two binders between them by inflating the first by the second.
<EMI ID = 31.1>
