<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Process for constituting self-supporting flat construction elements of a complex nature",
The present invention relates to a method of constituting flat construction elements of a complex nature and of execution 16 manages, albeit of large dimensions, as tarsi, plates or sails of construction, which do not lend themselves to transport, nor, consequently, to prefabrication, said constitution being effected by means of a core made up of rigid blocks.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Such lightweight construction elements have heretofore only been able to be prefabricated in formats which are not too large to be transportable. They generally consist of several layers of different composition, that is to say, on the one hand, of a core, constituted for example by blocks of cellular material, waffle or lattice elements, or of profiles, and, on the other hand, outer layers or coating layers fixed to said core by gluing or by any other suitable means. With regard to the stresses to which the elements thus constituted in the construction are subjected, the shear stresses are absorbed by the core and those of traction and compression by the outer layers.
The flat building elements in question have heretofore been manufactured by first casting a layer of a suitable pourable and hardenable material, such as plastic or the like, onto a support or bed, and then placing the castrated or lattice-shaped core with one of its faces wide and open in the still wet layer thus obtained. In order to coat the other wide open face of the core with a similar layer, it was then necessary to turn the part after the first layer had cured and place it in a second layer coated on said support or bed.
However, it is easily understood that, when the parts thus formed are too large, it becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, to turn them over and transport, or at least to control the attachment of the various layers by gluing to the core, and this as a result of the fact that the parts would not withstand the stresses generated during their turning or transport. On the other hand, the manufacture of such parts without overturning would require the use of solid core elements or the bonding to the core of a coating layer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
continuously manufactured beforehand, which is also only possible with parts that are not too large and therefore easy to handle.
On the other hand, very great difficulties are also encountered in the production of sufficiently neat supports or beds for the casting of the various layers in the manufacture of very large building elements of a complex nature. The difficulties become almost insurmountable in the manufacture of curved construction elements, which requires the use of two molds of extremely careful execution.
Indeed, the slightest deformation by shrinkage, warping, etc. of the first layer applied to one of the faces of the part, makes the strength and security of the bond of the second layer to the opposite face illusory.
However, the present inven on aims to remedy the above. said difficulties encountered in the manufacture of self-supporting flat construction elements of a complex nature and lightweight construction, in which a core is rigidly fixed to a support layer forming the lower flat face of the part, by aligned gluing of core elements, the upper support layer then being bonded to the core, forming the core of the building element directly to the construction itself by means of preferably hollow elements on the still wet lower support layer and preferably transparent, these hollow elements being anchored in this support layer by means of wall elements and provided on the opposite side with wall elements,
which form a coating layer, preferably predominantly closed, opposite the lower support layer and spaced therefrom, which coating layer is then formed on and in which the upper support layer, also preferably transparent is anchored . The use of hollow core elements, open only on the side of the lower support layer, has the advantage of constituting
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
killing a closed base for the formation of the second support layer, so as to make the use of a back die superfluous, and this leads to the constitution of curved construction plates or panels, which allows to avoid the considerable costs inherent in the use of such a device.
The core of a large building plate or web is, according to the process of the present invention, made of prefabricated rigid hollow blocks having at least all the same height, preferably made of a transparent plastic material and which may for example be in the form of square blocks 3. vertical side walls. These hollow blocks are closed at the top by a flat wall and are open below.
They are juxtaposed with their side walls by bringing them together, for example by gluing or welding, or, when the material of the walls is suitable, by screwing, stapling, etc.
In order to constitute the construction element according to the invention to the construction itself, the following procedure is carried out. The lower layer is first formed by casting or applying a suitable liquid-liquid and curable material, preferably constituted by a transparent plastic material, onto a support of the appropriate nature and shape in a layer of uniform suitable thickness. Said hollow bodies are then placed in alignment with their open side in the not yet hardened layer and then assembled so as to form the core.
This gradual process makes it possible, on the one hand, to fix the side walls of each of the hollow bodies placed in the lower layer by penetrating sufficiently deep into the latter, and, on the other hand, to firmly join together the side walls. adjacent hollow bodies and judiciously control the assemblies thus obtained.
The core thus formed presents, therefore the hollow bodies of which it is composed are made to be closed at the top.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
an upper face at least for the most part closed and at most interrupted by the relatively narrow joints between the various hollow elements, which can easily be covered.
The upper layer is then formed on the upper face of the core thus obtained, by application, in a layer of desired thickness, of a seni-liquid material, consisting of.
..preference by a transparent plastic material, and this in such a way that the coating thus formed is impeccably fixed to the core of which it perfectly matches the shape of its upper surface. The layers become sufficiently strong by curing, which allows the support of the lower layer to be removed.
Needless to say, the invention is in no way limited to the shape of the hollow core elements described above, but provides for all modifications and adaptations respecting its fundamental principle and remaining within the limits of the claims herein. -after formulated. Thus, for example, the side walls of said hollow elements can be perforated to save materials and reduce the weight of the construction.
