"Method and device for detecting the level of liquid steel in an ingot mold".
The present invention relates to a method for detecting the level of liquid steel in an ingot mold, applicable both in the case of conventional casting and in the case of continuous casting, as well as a device allowing the setting. implementation of this process.
The detection of the level of the liquid steel in an ingot mold allows easy monitoring of the steel casting devices.
In the particular case of continuous casting, it is thus possible to synchronize in a satisfactory manner the pouring of the liquid metal into the mold and the extraction of the molded product at the other end of the in3allation. This synchronization is essential in order to maintain a substantially constant liquid steel level, so as to ensure a regular production of cast steel.
Various solutions have been proposed in the field of continuous casting with a view to effecting the connection between the flow rate of pouring into the mold and the speed of exit from the mold. The planned mechanical, magnetic or electrical devices are intended to control the device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Metal pouring device, generally controlled by an electric motor, at the ingot extraction speed, determined by the variation in the level of liquid steel in the mold. Depending on the variation in the level of molten metal in the ingot mold, an apparatus for adjusting the pouring mechanism subjected to the detection of this level corrects the flow rates of cast steel.
The method for detecting the level of liquid steel in an ingot mold, which is the subject of the present invention, provides a particularly simple solution to the problem of slaving to the exit speed of the ingot from the device for pouring liquid steel.
The method targeted by the present invention consists in using a thermocouple, a metallic element of which is formed by the wall of the mold itself and of which the second metallic element, arranged through this wall from which it is insulated, reaches the inner face of the mold, the "hot" weld between the two metallic elements of the thermocouple being produced by the liquid steel present in the ingot.
When the liquid steel does not reach the level where the thermocouple is located, the thermocouple does not emit any signal. On the other hand, when the steel performs the weld, the electrical signal generated is collected in a suitable device revealing the presence of steel at the thermocouple.
In order to monitor the variations in the level of the surface of the liquid steel in the ingot mold, it is possible, according to the invention, to use several thermocouples arranged at different levels. The adjustment of the metal pouring device is thus facilitated. Any displacement of the level of the steel in relation to the desired level causes, thanks to the appearance or disappearance of the signal generated by the thermocouple concerned, an adaptation of the flow rate of pouring of the liquid steel which increases if the level of the metal in the mold decreases, and which on the contrary decreases with the decrease in the speed of extraction of the ingot detected by the rise of the steel in the mold.
The required insulation between the wall of the mold and the metal element which passes through this wall can be achieved using a very thin insulator, given the low potential difference to which the usual thermocouples give place. In the case of water cooling of the walls of the ingot mold, as is generally the case for continuous casting, the metal element must be sufficiently isolated from this cooling water to allow the detection of a suitable signal.

According to the invention, the method used to detect the level of liquid steel in the ingot mold, whether the casting takes place in a conventional manner or whether it is continuous, also allows easy measurement of the temperature of the steel. in the mold, at any level whatsoever, provided that the thermoelectric characteristics of the metals forming the pairs are known.
The device which is the subject of the present invention, for the implementation of the method described above, comprises a rod or a metal wire passing through the wall of the mold from which it is isolated, to end at the inner face of the mold so as to enter in contact with the liquid metal intended to form the weld between the two branches of the thermocouple. The appended figure represents, by way of example and in no way limiting, a device of the type targeted by the invention. The thermocouple comprises a rod B1 placed through the wall B2 of the mold, the weld S between B1 and B2 being produced by the liquid steel A.
The thermocouple is connected to a device D for electing the generated electrical signal and possibly to an automatic adjustment device of the steel pouring device.
According to the invention, when the walls of the linen cupboard are made of copper, a metallic element such as bronze can advantageously be used to constitute the thermocouple.
